Mr. Sulu and Lt. Uhura Looking For Love

Yes, sorry about that, my computer has been doing some weird things lately! Very interesting about cracker though as I thought it would be the same everywhere in the English speaking world!

Americans don't speak English, they speak American! :)

Two countries separated by a common language.

Do you put things in the trunk or the boot of your car? When you enter a building, are you on the ground floor or the first floor? Do you go up to a higher floor in an elevator or lift? Is a bird an attractive lady or a flying creature? Or both? Do you say "I might" or "I might do"?

Well, at least Sulu tried to approach Uhura in Mirror, Mirror...
Between that and the "I'll save you, fair maiden" bit in "The Naked Time," I always figured that Sulu had a bit of an unspoken crush on Uhura. He does in my headcanon, at least.

Americans usually say do where English say have is one constant difference I've always noted!

Well their alter egos in the Mirror Universe definitely had something going on but as we saw very little of their Uhura maybe it was a one way thing for Mirror Hikaru?

I'd say that Mirror Sulu's opening line "Still no interest, Uhura?" makes it pretty clear that it was a one-sided attraction.

Could you care less?

I don't mind different vocabulary, it's in insane logic of "I could care less" actual meaning "I couldn't care less" that grinds my gears :p

As for original post, I believe Sulu was the only one who had a child during the trek-on-screen period (David Marcus predates Kirk's captaincy, and McCoy's daughter predates the series too. Demora would have been born sometime between Turnabout Intruder and Motion Picture)

The discussion of UK vs US English reminds me of some online article I was reading by a UK writer, which included the expression "different to." Some grammar-conscious American felt the need to post a comment with nothing to say about the actual article, just to "correct" the author and let him know it's supposed to be "different from."

Anyway, back on topic, I think if Sulu had been Leila's former love interest, that would have been an interesting angle for the time, as the Asian-American male / Caucasian female romantic dynamic was quite uncommon in movies and TV.

I have a feeling that if "This Side of Paradise" had been kept as a Sulu love story, they would have cast an Asian actress to play Leila Kalomi.

I wonder if Leila Kalomi was intended to be Asian/Pacific Islander of some kind in the first place. The name sounds Hawaiian.
