That was an unnoticed part of TOS for years for me. Finally I read that Takei wanted Sulu in "Naked Time" to be using a foil instead of a Katana blade because, in the future, culture had diversified enough so that Sulu's Asian background didn't influence his choices. (NuTrek changed this about Sulu when they gave him a Katana blade)

Making a Eurasian woman have a Hawaiian sounding name would also fit this thinking of more cultural diversity in the future.

I have a feeling that if "This Side of Paradise" had been kept as a Sulu love story, they would have cast an Asian actress to play Leila Kalomi.

As for original post, I believe Sulu was the only one who had a child during the trek-on-screen period (David Marcus predates Kirk's captaincy, and McCoy's daughter predates the series too. Demora would have been born sometime between Turnabout Intruder and Motion Picture)

So reboot Demora is a completely differently Demora since she looks about 8 in STB and Sulu is only 28.

Correct, given she was around 20-25 in Generations (2293), putting a birthdate around 2268-2273. Turnabout Intruder was 2269, TMP was nearer 2273/4ish. The kid shown in Beyond (was her name given? Was it even stated it was Sulu's daughter?

Yeah, I suppose she could have one in the prime universe that wasn't named. Who went on to do something non-Starfleet possibly...or is somewhere else when Generations happens...
