Once it got going, it was a good action piece, but it took a long time to get going. I don't get a lot of the silent moments Denzel Washington and it was difficult to accept Mila Kunis in her action role.
That being said, it was a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Been watchin' a lot of Burn Notice this weekend, so yeah, only two movies this weekend.
Seein' that The Fall of Sam Axe, the made for tv movie set between the fourth & fifth seasons of Burn Notice reminded me that 24 had a made for tv movie, too.
So, I found that, and watched it. It was alright, even though I haven't seen the sixth or seventh seasons of 24. And the movie is a setup for the seventh season of the series.
Still, Keifer Sutherland as Jack Bauer is almost always awesome, in small doses. Found out with the DVD series that the character isn't fun to watch in marathon sessions.
Followed that with Small Soldiers...that was a dumb movie. Toys that come to life and fight a war in suburbia...with Phil Hartman, Kirsten Dunst, Robert Picardo, David Cross, Jay Mohr & Denis Leary...
Frank Langella is the voice of the "monster" leader while Tommy Lee Jones is the voice for the commando leader. And even though his dialogue is just a bunch of random military inspirational phrases, he was still the best part of the movie.

One movie a night this weekend (counting Friday), and all of them top calibre. The film is a rather unusual effort from Ron Howard and Peter Morgan, whose previous collaboration (and previous independent works) wouldn't have suggested they'd be interested in this kind of subject-matter or film style (the film is very casually R-rated, and could probably have been made PG-13 without losing anything essential, so it's especially impressive that they didn't go that route; f-bombs and casual nudity for all!). I (like most North Americans, I suspect) don't know much about Formula One racing, and I'd largely avoided reading up on the history here, so I genuinely didn't know how things were going to end, which made for an interesting viewing experience. Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl are both excellent in the lead roles. There's a variety of supporting characters, including Alexandra Maria Lara (Traudl Jung in Downfall and Olivia Wilde, but they don't have much to do (one of the various women in Hemsworth's life is played by Natalie Dormer, who shows up entirely in the first ten minutes, and then vanishes; either she's just working her way through the Avengers, or was a fan of the subject-matter, because I'd have thought this was a little small a part for her otherwise).

The John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, Tim Allen and William H Macy suburban biker film about some 40-ish yr old men who are in various stages of mid-life crisis and looking to reinvent themselves.
Outside of William H Macy's character being the goof and being overtly bungling the rest of this screenplay was short on laughs. Each actor had a few highlights but I found this to be a very pedestrian film. I recall it did well at the theater and a quick look at BOM confirms it, not sure what audiences saw in this film. It did $168m domestic, for a comedy that usually gets you a sequel regardless.

This one is a buddy cop movie and although Bullock provides the star power and a decent comedic performance as a straight-laced FBI agent, Melissa McCarthy is the one who delivers the goods as a mean foul-mouthed cop.
164. Before Midnight (✩✩✩✩) - Download - I've been waiting for this for a long time, ever since I saw the first two. How could there not be a third? Can't believe it's been 18 years since the first one. This one started off a little shaky and it looked like it was breaking away too much from the format of having two people strolling along and having a conversation but it eventually got to that and it really delivered. Some good conversation about life and whatnot. It's surprising how engaging their conversations are. And I'm especially impressed with how Delpy and Hawke are able to do those really long continuous scenes. It was nice to see the characters at a different place in life after all this time and I hope they can crank out a few more of these over the next few years or decades. At 9-year interavls, the next one should be out in 2022.
165. Black Snake Moan (✩✩✩½) - Download - Kind of a bizarre movie about a sex-crazed girl in her underwear who's held captive with a chain by an old man who wants to change her ways. Stars Christina Ricci and Samuel L. Jackson. I say it's bizarre because the acting is a little over the top. It satirizes and exagerates the South. The two stars make the movie, not so much fun, but interesting enough.
166. Captain Phillips (✩✩✩✩✩) - Theatre - Excellent movie. It brought drama and tension to the issue of piracy off the coast of Africa, something that many might not take seriously given that we've got a small boat of impoverished fishermen up against a cargo ship. Also, I concur with what CaptainCanada said earlier. Barkhad Abdi really held his own and delivered a phenomenal performance. I'd be surprised if he didn't get an Oscar nomination. I could have sworn that I've seen him before but given that this is his first acting credit, I guess not. Read this article on Barkhad Abdi. Apparently he was a cab driver in Minnesota when he decided to try out at an open casting call. In closing, there is one thing I found odd, something that almost took me out of the movie. It was the lack of weapons on the ship but apparently this does happen. Providing security is an added cost and letting the crew carry fire arms is problematic due to safety and liability issues. Maybe the movie could have addressed that a little more so that it didn't feel like a contrived situation to those who don't know much about the policy. Still, not a big enough nit-pick to dock points.

Is this what's passing for comedy and general good movies in theatres today with Rotten Tomatoes even giving it a high review?
This was painful, painful, painful. First off, even if I didn't know coming into this that Rebel Wilson was a one note actress, I'd still hate her performance as Fat Amy. None of the main characters made me empathize with them at all.
I don't know how much they could've done with better writing, but it would have been a start. Instead of coming out and poking fun at the old stereotypes like the blonde American control-freak (do these girls actually exist anywhere besides these movies?) or the lesbians or the larger girls, why don't you say something profound about the state of acceptance in our world? No, let's give them one-liners instead and skate by. The lead bitch of Aubrey is so steadfast about the traditions of the Bella's and then magically decides that Beca's ideas, which she has rejected totally for the entire movie is the way they should go. She just hands over control like that because of a koom-by-ya session without a second thought. Yeah, because that's realistic. The other experienced Bella, Chloe, has one of her first scenes in the college shower room basically standing over Beca like she's going to take advantage of her to force her to sing some song, going on about how comfortable she is in her skin. Really? Maybe with the guy you were just fucking, but with a girl you just met because her voice is pretty? Maybe if Chloe had been set up as a lesbian or bisexual character herself and maybe she's attracted to her voice on that level, but not just "Ohmigod, you can sing! I'm going to stand here with everything hanging out to make you sing more!" All Fat Amy is given is one liners that mostly highlight that she is indeed fat. Well, I guess you can only give Rebel Wilson so much to do before she gets out of her range.
I can excuse bad acting sometime, but I can't excuse horrible writing. The plot was already going to be the tired old "boy meets girl, they break up, they get together" thing, but they had such an opportunity to shake that up or at least do something along the way. But they decided it'd be better to just do the same old same old and do it like crap.

Been watchin' Burn Notice (season five), The Walking Dead (season three) and Arrow (season one) a lot the last few days, but I managed to get a few movies in, too.
H2:RV was okay, not great. I haven't seen the original version, which I know establishes the Immortals as space aliens. This isn't much better, but at least they're still human, just from the distant past and sent into the future. I've now seen the first four movies of the franchise, and the first is still the best.
Anytown, USA was an odd little documentary about a mayoral election in New Jersey, where the two party system looked like it would get challenged by a third, write-in candidate. Turns out, not so much...the incumbent won, the third party guy didn't even split the vote enough to make a difference. And then he died.
R237 was a odd movie that was just clips from The Shining and other Stanley Kubrick films and voiceover interviews with seemingly random folks about their impressions of The Shining. Off the wall stuff, too, like how it's all about the American oppression of Indians, the Holocaust, and even Kubrick's confession that he helped to fake the moon landings.
RI was an interestin' documentary about how Native Americans have been portrayed in films for the last hundred-ish years. I rather liked it.
And since it was named dropped in the documentary, I followed it up with Smoke Signals, the first film written, produced, and directed by Native Americans. Its a road trip buddy movie, but still enjoyable.
And then M&L, a made for tv movie with Sean Hayes as Jerry Lewis, that chronicled the professional relationship between Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis.
May wind up at the theater for Captain Philips tomorrow...

Went to the Cinemark in Lufkin yesterday, wound up seein' Machete Kills...and I was disappointed. The first one was awesomely dumb over the top action, and when the title for the two sequels came up in the end, I was excited about 'em.
This one opens with a trailer for the third movie, Machete Kills Again ...In Space, which just took the piss out of the whole rest of the movie where Danny Trejo's wrong Mexican isn't just a man, but an unkillable force for vengeance.
There was an event in Austin a couple of years ago, where Mel Gibson attended the premiere for Get the Gringo, met with Robert Rodriguez durin' the screenin', and agreed to be in Machete Kills. His character in this is the main villain, almost Bond like, but every time he starts to get cool, some stupid ass thing gets in the way. His precognition. His Star Wars fandom. That dumb sound effect whenever he looks up and to the side.
Out of the whole thing, the only good part was the Chameleon, played by four different folks in the movie. Its insane, of course, but entertainin'.
And there are two bonus bits after the credits - a blooper and a bonus bit for the third, if there is a third.
Sunday matinee, and I was one of two folks in a theater that seats two hundred.

167. Machete Kills (✩✩✩) - Theatre - Saw this movie as well, on Friday. Not a lot of buzz but I liked the "Machete" gag well enough to give this one a go too. The story is convoluted and not over-the-top enough for its subject matter. I liked the all-star cast though, with Charlie Sheen as the President being my favorite. He was credited as "Carlos Estevez" by the way. I was wondering how they'd manage a third movie set in space given the ridiculousness of such a thing, even for the machete franchise, but they managed to build up to it quite seamlessly and I plan to check that one out too. I thought the third one was supposed to be simply "Machete Kills Again". Gotta read up on the reason for the change. And I suspected that there might be some end-credit scene, but I didn't stick around to find out. I'll have to catch that some other time.

I found this to be a fun little film about admitting where your hearts true passion lies. Rogan and Banks were great as the titular characters and the in joke of having Tracy Lords as a character wasn't too bad.

Watched two movies today.
M43 was a collection of shorts that consisted of dick & shit jokes. The openin' sketch is a blind date between Kate Winslet & Hugh Jackman and the twist is that Jackman has balls hangin' from his throat, just to give ya an idea.
The credits have bloopers, and there's a last short after with Elizabeth Banks goin' up against an gay animated cat that masturbates to pictures of its owner.
Total waste of time.
Watched the unrated version of PA4 this afternoon. The only differences I could spot, from seein' the theatrical version once, were a trick or treat sequence and no Mexican bonus scene after the credits.
It did creep my younger nephew out, though, so, mission accomplished.

Everyone was right, from office co-workers to FB out of town friends to Captain Canada, it was indeed worth experiencing on the big screen. I also, when necessary, will go out of my way for 2-D cause the 3-D is just not that needed for the duration of most films trying to get the extra $3-5 out of you. However, again, this movie makes it work for about 80min of it's 95min run time. I saw it in IMAX 3-D and that's an $18 ticket here.
This is that rare movie that absolutely demands to be seen on the biggest screen you can find, in 3D. This would not be the same movie in 2D, let alone on a TV. It took Alfonso Cuaron years to make this, and it shows; this is virtuoso stuff, merging the absolute best movie-making technology with some wonderfully humanistic storytelling. Sandra Bullock gives the best performance I've ever seen from her.
Well crap. I was going to save this for DVD. So seriously, it's big screen worthy of my theater dollars? I didn't doubt the quality but wasn't sure it screamed "must see big screen". But it is worthy of my $12 then?
While I feel Bullock did a solid job in Blind Side, for which she won her Oscar, I can't say she was a hands down best choice that year. Her performance here though validates that Oscar and I'd be surprised if she doesn't get at minimum a nod come February.
Clooney also does a great job with his more limited role but the charisma and charm is still there through that fishbowl helmet.
Having now seen it I wonder what it might've been like with the long attached Rachel Weisz and Robert Downey Jr.
I think I've forgotten some of the movies that I've watched since I haven't been keeping up with them very well lately. Oh well... here's stuff that I watched last week.

I've actually thought before, "Have I seen that recently?", cause sometimes a movie just doesn't impact you strong enough one way or the other to remember. I get what you're saying there. Moonrise Kingdom - HBO go on Apple TV - I like quirky, off the wall movies. However their is even a breaking point for me. Moonrise Kingdom is that breaking point. While I wouldn't say I hated, I couldn't wait for the movie to be over. In fact I can't believe I watched the entire thing, it's a lot like a car wreck that you can take your eyes off. The performances come off as caricature of a improv movie, but terribly done.

Watched the two Amityville movies available on Netflix last night.
First, TAH, a "found footage" horror about a new family that moves into the Amityville house. Its the pre-teen son that obsessively carries his camera around, and even films the recordin' from a video phone he finds in the house. No sign of authorities until the third body turns up. Ya think they would have taken it as a bad sign with their own realtor dies on the front steps before they even buy the house...
Security cameras get installed after the third body, which leads to the fourth body, and then it makes you start to wonder what kind of father would install a camera in his teenage daughter's bedroom, facin' the bed? Not to mention the cameras still workin' despite a power outage...
I thought the two Grave Encounters movies were the worst "found footage" horror movies I'd ever see.
Followed that with the documentary MAH, which is simply Daniel Lutz talking about the month his family lived in the Amityville house back in the '70s.
I went out this afternoon for a cheap matinee showin' of Captain Phillips at the Carmike Six in Nacogdoches. It was a bit slow to start, but once it got goin', it was actually pretty good. And the endin' was certainly tense enough, despite knowin' the captain survived, since he wrote the book the movie was based upon.
Tom Hanks won't win any Oscars for this, but still worth watchin'.
And tonight is the 375th "new to me" movie of the year, Screwballs II: Loose Screws via Netflix Instant.
I saw the first movie as part of the Alamo Drafthouse "Summer of '83" series back in June, but this one has nothin' to do with that one, except its the same four stereotypical guy types (not the same characters) tryin' to get laid. As with the first, sexual innuendo & puns are scattered throughout the movie, as well as T & A. But, where the first was set in the '50s, givin' it a kind of naïve innocence, this is set in the mid '80s, makin' it pretty tacky.
