I watched this on Halloween, thus knocking another Kubrick film off my watch list. I'd place this one in the upper echelon of the ones I've seen; partly because the conventions of making a horror film result in Kubrick at least identifying somewhat with some of the characters, if only in terror (although he clearly doesn't empathize with Jack Torrance, much to Stephen King's annoyance). It gets off to a bit of a slow start, but the final hour is pretty riveting, despite the fact that the major beats of this story are all very well-known.

Well, I went ahead & watched the first Pumpkinhead sequel Wednesday night. About the only redeemin' quality it has is Garak as the small town sheriff.
I spent Halloween watchin' Romulan themed episodes from the Star Trek franchise.
The first new movie of November was RJ, starrin' Felicia Day with Doug Jones, Robert Patrick & Jason Mewes and a bunch of folks ya have never heard of. Pretty terrible movie about an underfunded government agency that shoots down asteroids that threaten the planet. And they say "motherfucker" a lot.
Followed that with the Jason Statham movie. It was more of a drama than an action movie, about a veteran hidin' from court martial on the streets of London who lucks into a place to stay and winds up gettin' back at the people who traffic in prostitutes while romancin' a nun.
Finished the eighth season of Bones yesterday.
Watched OHF this mornin'. I liked it quite a bit more than White House Down. I think North Korean terrorists make a more credible threat than a hodge podge of the FBI's most wanted.
I read the other day that they're workin' on a sequel set in London.
Started watchin' Leverage from the beginnin', got three episodes in before decidin' to switch back to movies.
Second movie of the day was TNTJ, a blacksplotation movie about a woman who avenges her brother's murder in Chinatown by sleepin' with the murderer, kidnappin' an undercover cop, and fightin' a room full of Asian thugs wearin' just her black undies (or white undies in one shot).

One could argue that this movie represents the peak of Tom Hanks' film stardom, where what is virtually a one-man show set mostly on an island earned over $400 million worldwide (in Year 2000 dollars, over $500 million now). Catch Me If You Can two years later was also a hit; after that, it was kind of a low-key decade for him on film, until this year's Captain Phillips. Likewise, director Robert Zemeckis spent the next decade producing somewhat creepy-looking CGI movies, until last year's Flight (which also involves a plane crash, and also involves the PR aftermath, albeit to a much greater degree).
77. Fight Club (B+)
I remember seeing the ads for this movie when it came out and thinking it looked rather goofy (the bar of soap, in particular). Actually seeing it for the first time is an interesting experience; the atmosphere is very, very late 1990s, pre-9/11. Well-acted and well-directed, but I didn't think it was an exemplary piece of filmmaking that it's often cited as being (#10 on the IMDb, as of this writing). Also, the special effects in the final shot are rather bad, which takes away from the moment.

BoD is a group of black Vietnam veterans who returned to the south and take on the KKK.
And between those two, I watched the 400th "new to me" movie of the year, Empire State which stars Liam Hemsworth as a security guard who helps his lowlife friends rob an armored truck company. Based on a true story of the largest cash robbery in U.S. history, it has Dwayne Johnson as NYPD detective investigatin' the theft.
Not too bad a movie.

The one time I saw this it was on basic cable, something like USA Up All Night or some such back in the early 90's and was edited, well, to death.
It's been floating in my Netflix queue awhile now and finally worked it's way up and seeing Stallone play the cliche Italian mobster driver Machine Gun Joe was a bit comedic. Especially when he opens up at the races start with that Tommy Gun.
Keeping in mind the era of the film and director this movie was decent but purely meant to be exploitive and shocking for the sake of it...I think. While there is a political narrative running through the film I didn't instantly recognize what I thought was commentary on 60s/70s political goings on but if there were I'd be curious to hear someones reply. The fact that the French are so vilified and given credit for being such a force struck me as odd. The French? Really? That had to be part of the joke.
Having seen it the film does have enough of it's own rough edits but clearly the cable edits I saw were more for censoring the nudity than anything.
Next up is Thor Dark World on Thursday evening!! Then I can stop avoiding that thread.

Awhile back, I saw the trailer for CV at a Drafthouse movie...can't remember which, probably a Weird Wednesday show, or something. Anyway, saw that the old Walter Matthau movie was on Netflix the other day, so I decided to watch it. Pretty cool to see a very young Andrew Robinson in a supportin' role. And the movie itself wasn't too bad, for a '70s bank heist story.
Followed that with LS&TSB. The Drafthouse was runnin' it as part of their "Pub Life" series in August, but I left Austin before it showed, so I missed out. I liked it. Pretty cool to see Jason Statham's first movie, and the endin' was fun, too.
And yesterday afternoon, I watched two direct to Disney DVD sequels. I watched THoND & Mulan before leavin' Austin durin' a Disney movie marathon I had on my roommates' Netflix. The younger nephew caught me watchin' MII and asked me why I was watchin' it. I told him, "because I can." Told my sister the same thing when she asked me why I watched it when she came home from work.
Been alternatin' between Leverage, Futurama & Breaking Bad between movies, or else the list would be longer for this update.
And I'm hopin' to get to the Thor sequel this weekend, since I watched the first earlier today, and have a plan to watch The Avengers tomorrow. Gotta gear up for the God of Thunder!
...I watched the 400th "new to me" movie of the year, Empire State which stars Liam Hemsworth as a security guard who helps his lowlife friends rob an armored truck company. Based on a true story of the largest cash robbery in U.S. history, it has Dwayne Johnson as NYPD detective investigatin' the theft.
I was going to watch that but a lot of people hated it and it didn't even get a theatrical release, so I passed. If it's not too bad I might reconsider.

That said, the story wasn't great and overall, I wasn't as impressed as many were. My review is here.
Melancholia - Amazon Prime app via Apple TV - Ok, so I get this is some existentialism look at life but couldn't this movie be just a little more coherent? I wanted to see this for a long time, especially after seeing Another Earth. I liked Another Earth but this, this was only mildly entertaining. My main issue was with Kirsten Dunst, she was just the wrong actress's for her role. I read some of the other actresses considered for the role and if any of them were in the part, it would have been wholly better. Don't get me wrong, I like her as an actress. However some actors can stretch for parts but she isn't one of them. She also stood out in the family dynamic, the whole rest of her family was British but she was not. Unless I missed an explanation, it just seamed really odd. The rest of the actors were really good in it, well as good as you can be with a convoluted story as this one.

Yes, it was the Kevin Bacon version and yes, even I am shocked I am giving it this high of a grade, especially when one of it's biggest strengths is John Lithgow in a serious turn as the town reverend.
This movie still fits today with the same kind of messages. I was also glad to see that Lithgow and Bacon's characters don't become caricatures of their positions. Each of them are doing this for a deeply rooted reason within each other and now because one is a rebel against the man and the other is a crazed religious zealot.

Saw that Sharknado is available on Netflix, and decided to see what all the hype was about...freakin' terrible movie. And I may be the last person on the face of the earth to see the damn thing, but holy crap, this isn't even so bad its good, its just bad.
Followed that up with two more gawd awful shark attack movies.
2HSA had Carmen Electra in a bikini for a couple of scenes, but the shark's size changed dependin' on where it was attackin'. Large enough to keep with a speedboat and swallow two skiers whole, but small enough to sneak up on a threesome in waist deep water....
MSvC had Robert Picardo & Jaleel White, and was a sequel to some other "mega shark" movie.
All three were from Asylum...bad effects, terrible actin' & poor continuity all around for all three.
Still hopin' to see the Thor sequel this weekend. Can't do the midnight show tonight like I thought I would...
...I watched the 400th "new to me" movie of the year, Empire State which stars Liam Hemsworth as a security guard who helps his lowlife friends rob an armored truck company. Based on a true story of the largest cash robbery in U.S. history, it has Dwayne Johnson as NYPD detective investigatin' the theft.
I was going to watch that but a lot of people hated it and it didn't even get a theatrical release, so I passed. If it's not too bad I might reconsider.
Well, ya know, it wasn't too bad. If you're a fan of Liam Hemsworth, its worth checkin' out, he's in just about every bit of the movie throughout. The Rock may be front & center on the DVD art, but he's definitely just a supportin' player in the movie.

This was a really fun movie, about the same as the first one. I really liked seeing more of Asgard and I think Loki might end up being my favorite Marvel character. He was awesome in this movie. I wish the bad guy would have been better developed though.

Went over to the Carmike 6 in Nacogdoches yesterday for a couple of movies.
First up, the new Thor movie...I liked it. I didn't love it, like the Loki fangirls on my facebook friends' list. And I stayed for the bonus scenes. About a dozen folks in the theater for the movie, only four in the theater for the first bonus scene midway through the credits, and I was one of only two still in the theater for the second bonus scene.
I got to see the five minute preview for the new Captain America movie, too. That looks awesome.
Went to Taco Bell for a cheap lunch and then back to the theater for the second movie.
E'sG was alright. I read the book last summer, after my roommate got a copy & let me borrow it when she finished. Kinda bummed that the story was so sped up, it didn't give a sense of challenge to Ender's journey...and the B plot of his older siblings conspirin' to take over the planetary government? Dropped completely, not even a hint of it in the movie. The endin' was a bit altered, too.
I just think it could have been better...may look into the other books in the series later, 'cause in this particular case, the book is definitely better.

The other of this year's Best Picture heavyweights, and it's a worthy film, though I think I prefer Gravity of the two. The list of major American films about slavery isn't terribly long, and this is almost the only one I can think of that's actually about life on the plantation, rather than the aftermath. The cast is terrific, although I think Brad Pitt is kind of distracting in his small but crucial part toward the end.

The best part of this movie was it's two stars: Rob Lowe and Will Rothhaar. I didn't see Rob Lowe until I caught it on a certain camera angle. Even after that, you don't see any of Lowe in this movie, you see Kennedy. I don't know much about the real Lee Harvey Oswald, but Rothhaar does a great job of creating this downtrodden man. He'd still be the crazy man on the corner today, but Rothhaar shows how he believes his convictions and how he just can't understand why the system won't jive with him.
Everybody has their own theory about the Kennedy assassination, I don't have one in particular. Even if this is one day proven to be a bunch of fiction, it's thoroughly entertaining fiction.
