155. Don Jon (✩✩✩✩) - Screening - I got a free pass to this movie last week at the comic shop. It was written by, directed by and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and includes Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza among the cast. It's about a guy who's love of porn is ruining the experience of sex with real women. The exploration of real sex vs the fantasy of porn was done quite well. It was both seen and described by Levitt's character in explicit yet humorous detail. Levitt really put himself out there with both his character's private time with porn as well as with some steamy and graphic sex scenes with some rather attractive ladies. He's certainly not afraid to embarrass himself for his art. I liked his directorial debut. He did well at hitting the right beats to get the right response from the audience like a good comedian does. Glad I saw it with a packed house so that I could see the timely and positive reactions. The performances were top notch (the cast played some pretty good Jersey Shore guido types) but as far as the writing, I was afraid that Levitt wouldn't be able to wrap things up properly and sure enough, he didn't. At least that's how I felt. He made the point he was trying to make, but it still felt like he had a great idea but didn't quite know how to finish it. Still, it's a great movie and I highly recommend it. One of the surprising things about the film is that it fits with the times. It doesn't demonize casual sex despite trying to tackle the porn issue.

Was I missing something here? Imdb is rating it at 6.9/10 and I've seen a lot of positive reviews. But this was boring as paste.

Joan Allen's character automatically thinks her husband has run off to Sweden? Could you bother to look for him? She spends the whole movie being spiteful and never checks if her husband was actually disloyal. Is this supposed to be story line because I didn't find it entertaining one bit.

The only scene saving this from an F is when Kevin Costner's emasculated male lead takes two kicks to bust a door off its hinges and then stands there looking like he's going to pass out. I was howling in laughter.

Much Ado About Nothing - On Demand - I have been waiting with much anticipation to see this since first learning of this secret project of Josh Whedon's. First, I'm a huge Much Ado About Nothing fan. It is my favorite of all of Shakespeare's works. I own almost all the different versions of this, I'm missing a few but will eventually, hopefully add them to my collection. The movie never played near me to see in the theater, because thats where I would have preferred to see it.

I really enjoyed this updated version, shot with a shoe string budget, with only 12 days to film. A lot of usual Whedon folks grace this film, making it very relatable from the start. Overall the acting is superb, with some real interesting takes on the characters. This movie is why as a whole I really like remakes. They take something familiar, add their own take on it and you have a wholly new and interesting version of something you are intimately familiar with. For me most of the choices really work, the house while being large really makes it intimate. Showing it in black and white, how certain scenes are framed and shot. I also loved the updated version of Sigh No More by Maurissa Tancharoen. After watching the movie, I immediately downloaded the sound track from iTunes. I also liked a lot the switching of Conrad to being a woman. Made the relationship between Don John and Conrad a lot more interesting. There are also some problems with the movie, most notably some performances are lacking. I imagine with the 12 days film shoot, they had a limited amount of takes. Also I disliked the actor who played Claudio, I think if they switched him with the actor who played Borachio things may have been a little better, maybe. The one aspect that I actually didn't like at all was the overt comedy when Benedict and Beatrice where they were "overhearing" how the other loved them. It really pulled me out the movie, like being hit by a train. However they got me back in a big way with the scene where Beatrice asks Benedict to kill Claudio over what happen. That was without a doubt the finest part of the movie. Well acted by Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof.

While I would still say that Kenneth Branagh Much Ado is still my favorite version, I can definitely see myself opting for this on those days when I want to watch it again.

67. The Spectacular Now (A)

One of the biggest successes at this year's Sundance festival, arriving in Kingston shortly after fellow Sundance success Fruitvale Station. The story starts out as being, basically a teen romance, but in the last thirty minutes or so becomes much heavier (some of the kernels of this are obvious in the lead-up; but there's a particular moment that was so unexpected that it produced audible surprise in the theatre I saw it in). The film's ending diverges from the novel's somewhat, and I've seen people interpreting it as a straight happy ending, but I don't agree -- the author has remarked that the adapters have considerable fondness for The Graduate, and I think watching the expressions play across Shailene Woodley's face convey considerable ambiguity. Woodley and costar Miles Teller are both terrific in the lead roles.

This was one of Roger Ebert's last new film reviews, and I think it was his last four-star review, which would be a nice bit of history.

Picked up UWvsH for ten bucks at a Wal-Mart last week. I thought it was alright, not great. The animated comic is split into six parts, since it was a six issue comic series. I watched 'em all in row, so it counts.

SUG was alright...not the best work from Pacino, Arkin or Walken, but good enough to be entertainin'. And Walken was especially toned down, so it was a nice surprise.

PM2 sucked out loud, even worse than the first.

FW was a cute movie for the kids to watch. DVR'ed the first two sequels, too, but didn't have time to watch 'em this past week.

The George Lopez special was one that originally broadcast live from San Antonio, Texas. It got a bit preachy there towards the end of the hour & a half, but still worth watchin'.

Got back out to my sister's last night, and she has Netflix, but not cable...or even network television.

Watched TENG last night, between episodes of Burn Notice. I didn't care too much for it, thought it was too self aware and broke the fourth wall way too much. The nephews were watchin' the sequel for it this mornin', but we didn't finish it.

Took the nephews over to Lufkin this afternoon. They went to see The Wolverine 3D while I went to see Rush. I guess I would have figured the movie would be better if I gave a damn about racin'....I did like Chris Hemsworth, though. I don't think he's done a bad movie yet.

Back to watchin' Burn Notice right now, may watch a movie or two before I call it a night tonight, though.

I started to watch Parker Sunday night, fell asleep durin' it. Had to start again Monday mornin', and it felt like the movie took forever to get goin'. Probably one of the weakest action movie Jason Statham has made.

I have seen STNY in bits & pieces, but for the first time start to finish Monday afternoon. I still like it, 'cause of Alan Alda.

And Monday night, I watched the third Highlander film. Didn't much care for it...the first one is still the best of the three I've seen.

The first movie I've seen in the month of October was the documentary TGWWITT. Pretty interestin' look at male character actors, full of familiar faces. I'd be interested to see a similar documentary for actresses.

Followed that with a standup performance from Kathleen Madigan, filmed in Detroit, Michigan.

And the 350th "new to me" movie of the year is only the second Marilyn Monroe I've ever watched, The Seven Year Itch. I didn't much care for it. Of course, she looked beautiful, but her ditzy blonde routine was just too much to make it enjoyable. I liked Some Like It Hot a lot more.

The live action homage to Fantasia starring Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina, Jay Baruchel and Teresa Palmer with minor roles by Monica Bellucci and Alice Krige.

My biggest problem was seeing Baruchel in the hero role. He just never sold me. I found Cage as Balthazar to be quite 'tame' and serviceable actually. Alfred Molina as the bad guy owned his scenes. The plot had to do with Molina's evil Horvath trying to release Krige's Morgan LeFey who Merlin had trapped into some Russian stacking dolls. Each layer of doll was an evil magician. Bellucci's character and a fellow Merlin apprentice sacrificed herself by merging with Krige. The movie frankly would've benefited by more Bellucci and Krige actually.

Glad I saw it and the dancing mop/brooms sequence was well done. Still, once you see it it's largely forgettable but not nearly the train wreck I was expecting. I seem to recall it getting scathing reports at the time.

161. Goats (✩✩✩✩) - Download - A coming of age movie about a kid who went away to private school. It's not as dull as it sounds. It has a colorful cast of characters that includes Vera Farmiga as the kid's hippy new age mom and David Duchovny as the bearded pot-smoking out-of work goat trekker who's been living with them for decades. Duchovny's oddball character really makes the movie. It's why it's called Goats.

This is that rare movie that absolutely demands to be seen on the biggest screen you can find, in 3D. This would not be the same movie in 2D, let alone on a TV. It took Alfonso Cuaron years to make this, and it shows; this is virtuoso stuff, merging the absolute best movie-making technology with some wonderfully humanistic storytelling. Sandra Bullock gives the best performance I've ever seen from her.

How to Marry a Millionaire was a cute movie about three women who plot to hook up with a rich husband, but wind up marryin' for love, instead.

Watched Spike Lee's first major film the other night. I thought it was pretty good, if a bit random. I liked seein' the source for Sal's Pizza seen in Inside Man and Red Hook Summer, too.

Finally saw ED2! That's three out of four films in the franchise I've seen, all that's left is Army of Darkness!

EFPE was a cute kids' movie, remindin' me a bit of Planet 51 from a few years ago. Havin' William Shatner voice the "Earth First" type general was a nice bit of irony. And I spotted the name "Odo" among the alien signatures, too.

The Kevin Nealon stand up was a bit better than his first one.

Watched the two GE horror films. Both are "found footage" movies. The first is about a reality show film crew findin' real terror in an old asylum. The second is about a fan of the first film goin' to the same asylum and findin' out that it wasn't just a movie. Both are bad movies, the second worse than the first. The elevator trick was bad enough, but it really goes off the rails when the ghosts start carryin' cameras around to film what's goin' on.

The Steven Wright stand up was okay. The first half was him on stage, the second half a self-aware Civil War story, with an old home video of one of his performances in Boston. I liked the stage show, not so much the Civil War thing.

Watched BB2 just 'cause its on Netflix and I watched the first last month with my brother's kids. Also, because its Rick Moranis's last screen credit, unless he comes out of retirement. The first was about family love & sacrifice, this was about romantic love.

Also, it should be noted that I watched 353 "new to me" movies in 2012. Brother Bear 2 was the 354 "new to me" movie this year.

And I went out to Nacogdoches's Carmike Six to see Gravity in 3D last night. Freakin' awesome movie! I wish seein' it on an IMAX-type screen was an option, but the closest one is in Louisiana.

Back to watchin' Burn Notice's fourth season via Netflix Instant right now...and there are still some movies playin' a the theater I wanna see, like Don Jon & The Family, Prisoners, Riddick & Runner Runner.

So I decided it was time to watch the movie that coined the phrase "Catfishing" as it was popularized by the college football "dead girlfriend" shenanigans. I forget the player and don't care to google it.

I found it to be a surprisingly engrossing documentary about how this woman in Michigan created an elaborate ruse using Facebook and stealing a semi-professional models pictures from Model Mayhem and other things about the net to build this fake world in order to get the attention of a modest NY photo and filmmaker.
I kept waiting and waiting for how Catfish came into play and near the very, very end this woman's husband tries to make a parallel with how catfish somehow preserved cod as it was transported across the ocean in containers. Something about the catfish taking the bad and preserving the good. I honestly am not sure if or how much that applied to what his wife was doing. Anyway, I found it to be engaging all the same.

68. Gravity (A+)

This is that rare movie that absolutely demands to be seen on the biggest screen you can find, in 3D. This would not be the same movie in 2D, let alone on a TV. It took Alfonso Cuaron years to make this, and it shows; this is virtuoso stuff, merging the absolute best movie-making technology with some wonderfully humanistic storytelling. Sandra Bullock gives the best performance I've ever seen from her.

Well crap. I was going to save this for DVD. So seriously, it's big screen worthy of my theater dollars? I didn't doubt the quality but wasn't sure it screamed "must see big screen". But it is worthy of my $12 then?

I paid $12 to see it last night, and after it was over, I wished I could have paid more to see it at an IMAX theater. Well worth seein' on a theater screen, may not even be worth watchin' on a television.

69. Captain Phillips (A)

I got to see this in a sneak peek at Empire, a week in advance of its wide release. This is Paul Greengrass' first film since the flop of Green Zone back in 2010, and, for my money, this is easily his best work that I've seen, and one of the year's best films. Tom Hanks was one of the biggest stars of the late 1980s and 1990s, but in the 2000s he largely (and gracefully) slipped out of the spotlight, spending his time lining his shelves with Emmys for producing HBO miniseries and doing smaller movies that mostly didn't attract attention. This is his best role in a very long time, up there with the work he was doing in his peak years, and is a lock to earn him his first nomination since Cast Away. The other significant performance, Barkhad Abdi as the leader of the Somali pirates, is equally worthy of recognition (and this is his debut performance). The rest of the cast is filled out with largely unknowns (Catherine Keener makes a brief appearance as Mrs. Phillips at the start of the movie).

Last year, Argo and Zero Dark Thirty got a lot of praise for taking a well-known situation and milking genuine suspense out of it -- Captain Phillips exceeds either of those on that score, in my opinion. Greengrass' visual aesthetic doesn't always work for me (and I think it's had a largely negative effect on how Hollywood shoots action movies), but it's perfectly deployed here. On the demerit side, the opening few scenes are a bit creaky in places, indulging in bits of heavy-handed foreshadowing that the rest of the film eschews. The film does an excellent job of balancing the situation, I think; we get a sense of the Somalis' sympathetic motives, without suggesting they're really just victims (though there's undeniably something very pathetic of seeing these violent but hapless guys being targeted by the multi-billion-dollar national security apparatus of the world's most powerful state; they clearly have no idea what they're doing or how badly the odds are against them).

If any movie in the last few years demands to be seen on the big screen, it's this one. It's hands down the best 3D I've ever seen.
