I felt this movie was trying too hard to be absurd, well, the lead character anyway. Gary, as played by Simon Pegg, is your "Peter Pan" wannabe who never has accomplished anything in life and is clinging to his glory years, as he sees them, and wants to get the gang together to complete the one thing they didn't all those years ago. Get to the end of the Golden Mile Pub Crawl. About 45min into the movie I was ready to punch Gary myself. As much as his friends grew up and moved into adulthood they seemingly never could say no to "King" Gary. The movie takes a bizarre twist in the second act and while there were a few good laughs I kept wishing I was watching Shaun of the Dead instead.

Bob Saget: That Ain't Right - HBO

Kicked off this round of movies with the fourth Highlander film, which brings together the two MacLeods, Conner and Duncan. I liked the first movie, but this is the first sequel I've watched. I liked the tv series, which I watched from time to time, so it was cool to see Duncan & his watcher incorporated into the movie continuity. But the movie itself was pretty lame. It doesn't make me wanna see the second & third sequels, or the two that followed this one.

Watched THM with my brother's kids last night...and it made me sad that my eight year old nephew recognized Eddie Murphy from Doctor Dolittle.

Finally saw the first H&K movie! For a stoner comedy, it was actually pretty funny. Neil Patrick Harris totally stole the movie. May have to find the sequels soon.

GC was pretty good, too. Great cast all the way around, and it was a scary reminder of just how terrifyin' Sarah Palin was durin' and since the election.

WYN? was just all around dumb.

And the 325th "new to me" movie of the year was another Bob Saget standup special! More dick & fart jokes, plus a song about beastiality!

Last year, I hit 353 "new to me" movies in a year. Pretty sure I'll pass that soon...

Starring Natalie Portman as, The Other Woman, who in this instance draws a married man out of his marriage(Jack), with Lisa Kudrow(Carolyn). Portman's character, Emilia or Em, has trouble relating to her stepson(Will) who has his own quirky tendencies. She also has her own set of daddy issues. He cheated on her mom with high class call girls back when Emilia was pre-teen. Emilia also has something of a short temper which doesn't sit well when the stepson, husband or her father are being difficult. Adding to the drama her mother is warming back up to her ex-husband. Which infuriates Emilia to no end. Emilia gets pregnant has the baby and the baby dies of SIDS(Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). This pushes Emilia and Jack apart to the point of divorce also. Meanwhile Carolyn has been moving on as well and is set to get married at the movies end. Will isn't sure how to process all of this and the beginnings of a reconciliation seem to be starting at movies end with Jack and Will.

It's well acted and I give it the B for that but since it's not a fun movie or one I'd want to re-watch then this is as high a grade as I go. A grade films have to have re-watchability as one criteria to get that grade for me.

I've seen bits of the Patton Oswalt standup special, and heard a couple of jokes on the radio, but this was the first time I watched it all the way through. It was pretty funny stuff.

Found the third Harold & Kumar movie on demand. I didn't like it as much as the first, but it was still pretty funny. Still gonna look for the second one.

Watched Firestarter yesterday mornin'...I liked it, may have to check out the Stephen King story at some point, but no rush. George C Scott was especially pedo creepy as the main villain. And watchin' a very young Drew Barrymore reminded me of a college roommate I had who refused to watch any movies with an adult Drew Barrymore because he refused to believe the little girl from E.T. was a sex symbol.

Watched a couple of movies last night...

TSE was Steven Spielberg's first movie, based on a true story that happened here in Texas, about a woman who helped break her husband out of jail so they could get their son out of foster care and wound up takin' a state trooper hostage along the way.

Followed that with PT, my new second favorite Rock Hudson movie, after Man's Favorite Sport?. It was cute how risqué the dialogue tries to be, but it must have been cuttin' edge in the late 1950s.

And I watched Heath Ledger's final film this mornin'. It was suitably bizarre. My brother walked in about midway through and said it sucked before fallin' asleep on the couch. I kinda liked it. May have to watch it again in a couple of years, see if it gets better later.

Still got a couple of movies saved on my brother's DVR, and I may have access to Netflix again this weekend!

This oddball comedy cop movie starring Will Ferrell and Mark Whalberg as the cops in the Detective pool that no one else takes serious is mostly amusing. It starts by showing us just who the top cops are, as played by Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. They are only in about the first 10 or so minutes of the movie though. Mark Whalberg as Terry has been saddled with Ferrell's Allen because he mistankingly shot Derek Jeter in the Subway and that caused them the Yankees to lose the World Series. Allen is more or less just an internal affairs desk jockey given this assignment, I think to burden Terry. I don't recall it being specifically said why he's a detective other than he wanted the position. He clearly doesn't want the danger as he avoids all the "dangerous" calls, letting others take them which drives Terry crazy. The police captain is played by Micael Keaton who is a bit bizarre himself and uses phrases from TLC songs on occasion. Not going to summarize the whole movie but it was largely enjoyable just not one I'd want to own or re-watch anytime soon. Usually Ferrell, like Sandler, has a few scenes that are just too stupid to be funny but here Ferrell's character has a mild side to him, keeping back 'Gator', that works for me.

If I hadn't already seen The Other Boleyn Girl in the last few years or The Others I'd watch them just to keep the trend alive. ;)
 
Tyrannosaur - Amazon Prime on Apple TV via Airplay - Amazon Prime has finally added Airplay to its iPhone app. Now if they would just go ahead and make an Apple TV app, all would be right with the world.

I have wanted to see this ever since I first saw the trailer. This is a brutal film about small town man plagued by violence and rage that is driving him to self-destruction. Their is something about these small town british movies, where the characters are horrible people but you can't help but be drawn in by them. I really liked this movie a lot, you watch movies like these for the performances. This movie doesn't disappoint, great acting by everyone involved. I highly recommend if you are looking for something a little more serious to watch.

Finally got to see this, one of the year's earliest acclaimed films, from the 2013 Sundance Festival. Making a film of the final day in the life of Oscar Grant poses challenges: Grant's final day doesn't really have a plot arc, per se, though Coogler's screenwriting makes some attempts at creating callbacks in Oscar's final moments, which mostly work. The other big challenge, which the film also largely succeeds at, is avoiding making the whole thing feel like an extended version of the death of McBain's partner. There are a few moments that go too far in that direction, though (the widely-cited bit with the dead dog, his final conversation with his daughter). The movie's biggest strength is its superb acting, principally from Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer (a likely repeat Oscar nominee for the role; she gets the killer moment of catharsis), and Melonie Diaz (comparatively overlooked in the notices compared to her costars).

If you had given me a hundred guesses at the next likely collaboration between Jordan and writer-director Ryan Coogler, I would never have guessed that it would be a Rocky spinoff about Apollo Creed's grandson.

I've heard good things about Dredd for the longest time, and I've been meaning to catch it once it hit Netflix Streaming. I really liked this movie. The visual effects were pretty good and for an action movie, it was your typical story. However, I liked Dredd and Andersen (And I can see them doing a sequel to explore Andersen's backstory more) and it did make me wish I had seen the 3D version.

This movie was cute, entertaining, and classic Disney. It actually reminded me of why I like 2D animation and why I kind of miss it. Yeah, technology advances, but there is something simple yet creative about it that is lacking in the 3D films coming out now. This movie also had a great message about family and sticking together. Nice opposite from Dredd, which was a shoot'em up great action movie, this one was a fun entertaining family movie.

Thursday night, I saw that the Triple X sequel was on, so I tuned in for it after the niece & nephew went to bed. Geez, what a dull movie...Vin Diesel's character from the first is killed offscreen (gee, imagine that, considerin' the "deep cover" agents have the program logo tatt'ed on the back of their heads & he was bald) and a new criminal is tapped to replace him.

Ice Cube does not make for a good action star.

The first was dumb, the sequel is worse.

Friday night was a monster movie marathon...watched two Godzilla movies with the English dubbin' and then the second movie for the Jaws franchise.

The Gozilla movies were alright...kinda surprised by how similar the endings were, to be honest.

The Jaws sequel wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be, but it still wasn't very good, and didn't even have the benefit of a 3D gimmick like the sequel I saw back in June.

Watched WBaZ with the niece & nephew yesterday. They liked the animals, but couldn't keep up with the story, though that didn't stop 'em from repeatin' dialogue they thought was funny. Drives me nuts when they do that. The movie wasn't too bad, though I'm not sure the story deserved a movie to tell it.

Watched The Big Lebowski last night, 'cause I needed the laugh, and then followed that with a Louis C.K. standup filmed in Arizona. There were a few good jokes in there, too, though I'm still not a big fan of his, I can understand why folks like him.

Not sure what I'll be watchin' today. I DVR'ed the first three Free Willy movies yesterday, and picked up a new, cheap DVD last night.

I watched this for the first time in a while last night, along with my friend Stephanie, who had never seen it before (and didn't know anything about it either, so she managed to get the proper experience). Still one of my favourite movies. Rewatches always are always interesting to pick up on the subtleties of Robbins' performance in key scenes where what the audience at first thinks is happening is different from what is actually happening, but this time it really occurred to me how the Warden's dialogue in his scene with Tommy makes it seem like the moral crisis he's seeking a solution for is one thing, but is actually another.

Tina Fey isn't funny. Paul Rudd can't carry a movie and he needs to try something else than the stupid, happy-go-lucky guy. Do something dramatic and maybe I will take you seriously as an artist.
 
I like Paul Rudd. He's very funny.

150. Europa Report (✩✩✩½) - Download - A documentary style scifi movie about man's first mission to Europa, one of Jupiter's moons (they skipped Mars apparently), and things don't go as expected. Sharlto Copeley is part of the ensemble cast. It's tense because you really feel the danger involved in a manned mission such as this. I wouldn't call it a spectacular film, but if you're a scifi fan it's worth checking out.

151. Earth's Final Hours (✩) - Download - A chunk of white hole strikes the Earth, causing it to stop rotating and the magnetic field to collapse, and it's up to Robert Knepper, Stargate Universe's Julia Benson and Bruce Davison to set things right. It's an awful, awful movie, but it brought up some fascinating speculation about what mankind would have to do if the planet stopped rotating. It talked about a man living in a strip where night meets day called the "green zone". I think this movie was an attempt to capitalize on Robert Knepper's rising fame back in 2011 but the best part was seeing more of Juila Benson.

152. Marooned (✩✩) - Download - A 1969 film about astronauts who are trapped in orbit and can't get down. Boring movie. I even dozed off at one point and didn't bother to see what I missed because I knew I didn't miss anything. Stars Gregory Peck, Richard Crenna and Gene Hackman. Star Trek's Mariette Hartley who played Zarabeth is also in it. Sounds like it's similar to Gravity which comes out next week. That looks good though.

153. Star Trek: Of Gods and Men (✩✩✩) - Download - Typical fan film with poor effects and bad bad pacing, but the story had it's moments and seeing some professional work from real actors elevated it a it. I also liked that we got to see a lot of Trek alum together.

154. The Place Beyond the Pines (✩✩✩½) - Download - This movie had three acts that made it seem like three movies in one. It was a nice piece about a bank robber, a police officer and their kids. I'd say more but I don't want to ruin things. Stars Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendez, Rose Byrne, Bruce Greenwood and Ray Liotta. I wondered why Gosling and Cooper's names appeared together in the opening credits, then I found out why as the movie progressed.
