MLB Offseason - The Hotstove League

wfan radio is reporting that talks broke down between the red sox and texeira after his agent scott boras informed them he had a five year 160 million dollar offer on the table.of course he wouldnt say what team had made the offer, but from what i'm hearing i doubt it was the yankees and i dont think the nationals have that kind of money to spend.i could be wrong though.i feel bad for the sox having to deal with that a-hole boras.

5 year, 160? 32 million per? Can see why John Henry told him to shove it, if that's true. The rumors I saw were in the 10 year, 200+ range. Which, almost immediately, the Yankees denied having an offer out at all, and the Angels denied that theirs was anything near that, so could be Boras playing games again, and this time, the Sox said that if they had that great a deal from the usual Boras "mystery team", then he should just sign that deal and be done with it.

Be interesting to see whether Boras calls back and tries to get the Sox to spark back up the 8/180 deal, as that's the best of what has been reported, or if there really IS some massive overbid out there. And if that's from the Nationals, well, good luck with that...

I want to think that this tactic by Henry and Co. is calling Boras's bluff about there being another team out there with a significatly bigger offer. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, cause SI.com is saying they are still in the race, and with Boras stuff, John Heyman usually gets it first, cause he is practically Boras's propoganda machine.

And true, BTFLASH, it was not the Yankees who would have a bigger offer on the table. I just have this idea that the Yankees are gonna sweep in at the last second and blow them all away with some huge offer.

you good be right. but something tell's me the yankees are hot for manny. i would rather they got texiera , but i think the steinbrenners have a hard on for ramirez.bigger headlines, you know?

I think the Yanks better be careful what they wished for with CC and Burnett. I can't see CC staying healthy for that many years with the amount of innings he's thrown the past couple years and all that extra weight he's carrying around.

As for Burnett, he's effective when healthy. But he's a middle of the road starter with a history of injuries. Is he really worth $18M per?

I like the Mets deals for K-Rod and Putz. They got the 2 best relievers on the market for reasonable money/years.

As for Tex, I still think he'll end up in Boston. The O's and Nats are closer to home, but they suck. It's only a short flight from Boston to DC, and they give him the better chance to win.

sabathia is a nice pitcher who gives you innings but he is not among the elite pitchers in baseball. burnett is the one im concerned about. he's always hurt. this year he was pitching for a contract and won 18. but thats not typical of him.he's at best a 12 -14 game winner. it's the injurie's i worry about with him.he's always hurt.

Agreed. I can see him being the next Carl Pavano. I think the Yanks are still basically an aging all star team with a lot of holes.

ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting: 8 years, $170+ million for Mark Teixeira... to the Yankees.

That's $70 million of payroll next year spent on three of their infielders!

If they miss the playoffs next year, that would be awesome.

Absolutely ridiculous....I mean it's nuts, absolutely nuts.

I am not pissed the Sox didn't get him, cause they set a line in the sand and did not cross it, good for them. They are still a good team and have a good pipeline of talent coming through the farm system.

However, FUCK THE YANKEES. FUCK THEM. They can't do it like every other team, so they overspend for everyone. How is that competitive?! At all?! If they got Teixiera and had a comparable payroll as everyone else in the league, then fine, they got them, but their overspending is ridiculous.

I mean really, its time to start seriously thinking about a salary cap.

There will never be a salary cap. The players union is too powerful and too corrupt.

And as long as teams are free to spend, the Yankees, Angels, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs and a couple others won't want to change things.

Of course, the argument for keeping things status quo is that the Rays and Rockies made it to the World Series. Never mind that they won't be able re-sign their biggest names (Matt Holliday to the A's anyone?) or be able to make the postseason for 13 straight years.

The Yankees just spent over $400 million on three players.

Well I am a Red Sox fan, so bitching about payroll makes me a hypocrite. However, at this point, I can just see no other point. I mean it does not have to be a low salary cap, make it like $150 Million. The at least forces the Yankees to be competitive.

If Sabathia's 2008 doesn't put him amongst the elite, I'd question your definition of the term...

Well perhaps he/she is counting his post season outings, which were less then spectacular.[/
that and his first half with the indians . he was 6 and 8 with a 3.83 era as opposed to 11 and 2 with a 1.65 for the brewers. i would define johan santana as an elite as a pitcher .

I'm more surprised than pissed about Teixeira. I didn't think the Yankees were in it at all. Either they were just playing their cards close to the chest, or they realized that, with both the Angels and the Red Sox out of it (though I still think the Red Sox were just trying to play Boras' bluff), they had a shot and took it.

Oh well, he would have been nice to have, but the Red Sox will get by without him

I feel bad for the Nationals and the Orioles, to be honest. Neither of them ever had a shot at him, even though both teams needed him more than either the Yankees, Red Sox, or the Angels.

tom servo , i give credit where credit is due . it looks like you called this one right. all the indications where that the yankees where interested in manny not texiera. maybe they will still pursue him as well. even i , a yankee fan have to admit they are going a bit overboard this year.but hey. its their money . they can spend it as they please.they will be paying a hefty luxory tax next season.

Commissioner Boras and Commissioner Fehr wield more power than Commissioner Selig. The only way baseball would ever fix their problem is if MLB as a whole collapsed on itself. And that will never happen.

Yeah, I mean I am hearing many a Red Sox fan jumping off bridges at this point, cause it seems like the Red Sox have done nothing, while the Yankee's have done everything. We will see. The Sox still have a solid pitching, a solid lineup, and a solid bullpen, and their payroll will be around 110 mil I believe, and I for one would like to see them field the best team they can for as small a payroll as they can. There are indications that Tex wanted to be in NY, and if he did, there is nothing the Sox could do about that.

I wonder now if Theo is seriously considering a Peavy deal, something that could begin to counter act the Yanks spending spree. I also see the possiblilty of the Sox signing Lowe going WAY up now they they have the money to spend. Hopefully Lars Anderson becomes the Justin Morneau type the Sox project he is gonna be.

Still, I am disappointed, but the games need to be played.
