Michael Schumacher in 'critical condition'

Is he in an induced coma or is it a 'real' coma?

Edited to add - just Googled, induced coma.

I know generally who Schumacher is (though I don't know the particulars of his career), though I have never watched a Formula-One race.

Hope he is able to recover from what sounds like a particularly nasty accident with all of his faculties.

Quite often there are memorial threads for actors in SFF or in TV & Media and often I think I haven't heard of the actor concerned so I tend to look him/her up on IMDB. Sometimes I can place them from a role that is listed, sometimes I still can't place him/her. In such a case I usually have no interest in the thread and I don't post. I certainly don't make an issue about not knowing who they are.
Yep. It's incredible how easy is not be a dick when you think about it.

I don't follow motorsports too much, but I really like Schumacher, he's one of my favourite drivers. The guy is a pro and a gentleman, and I really like his style of driving. I hope he will be fine.

There would be few Australians who hadn't heard the name Schumacher I suspect. I am not a fan of motor sports at all (or any sports) but I certainly knew who he was. I do hope he recovers, can't see him necessarily getting back to his career in a hurry but he could certainly be prominent in racing in other areas if that doesn't work out.

Because I was trying to figure out who this guy is. I know Formula 1 is basically European NASCAR, but I don't follow auto racing at all.

More like European Indy car racing. The cars are practically identical in looks.

I don't know what the regulations are in either one.

Except of course F1 is a global sport, visting six continent's during a season. True the teams are based in Europe with most of them based in the UK. But I suspect most wouldn't call it "European" Indy Car Racing. They might say it's eqivelant in the US is Indy Car.

I asked honest questions seeking honest answers. I'd never heard of the man before his tragic accident. That others thought being snarky and insulting towards me was preferable to answering my questions is what I consider to be beyond the pale.

And yet when I attempted to provide some context, your response contained the question "So what?"

Not quite. It was my intention to point out that no matter how many millions know him, many billions will not. It's not a crime to not be aware of someone "famous". I was not trying to antagonize people. I have repeatedly said I wish Mr. Schumacher well. I had no intention to make this thread "about" me, but neither did I feel the need to be insulted without standing up for my point or to turn the other cheek either, as I've never been anything but a positive contributor to this community.

God speed to Mr. Schumacher, and all my best to his family and friends. It's a shame that some would try to make the thread more about his global notoriety than about his quick recovery.

Your goal was to state the obvious, then?

It's not a crime to not be aware of someone "famous".

No one said it was a crime, but thanks for not exaggerating.

I was not trying to antagonize people.

I doubt the truthfulness of this statement.

I have repeatedly said I wish Mr. Schumacher well.

This one is blatantly false. You said "hope he recovers." A whopping three words. It was the one and only time you said anything in this thread that remotely resembles "wish[ing] Mr. Schumacher well." The rest of your posts were defenses of your original position that Schumacher, being someone you weren't familiar with, was beneath notice. I didn't know about him, either, but the original post in this thread gave me enough context to go by. Funny how that works.

I had no intention to make this thread "about" me, but neither did I feel the need to be insulted without standing up for my point or to turn the other cheek either, as I've never been anything but a positive contributor to this community.

Right, you were "just asking questions," because no one ever does that with the intention of trolling or being disruptive. Even though we have Google, Bing, and this vast wealth of information we call the World Wide Web, everyone who is "just asking questions" must be humored instead of told to stop being tedious and obstinate.

I don't know anything about Schumacher other than what's been said in this thread. He sounds like a stand-up fellow and I hope he recovers soon.

It apparently wasn't obvious, though, since I was implied to have a learning disability for not knowing the man. That's hardly a level-headed reply. And how many words must I post to let people know I am hopeful for his recovery? What more is there to say? Three or four words of condolence is usually all these threads get anyway, if people don't just post a sad emoticon.
I've been a regular upstanding poster for over twelve years, but I post a few questions here and I'm suddenly some kind of miscreant poster.

Sorry to here about Schumacher, Hopefully he'll pull through. It's a rough way for his family and friends to start a new year.

And stop making this thread about you, Pavonis. Just stop, as by continuing these comments that is all you are doing. It doesn't matter whether you've been here twelve years, twelve minutes, or from day one. It's nothing but a tedious distraction from the thread topic and making this thread all about you. Stop. None of this is making you look anything but terrible.

As much as I cheered against him in his racing career, this is one I hope he wins.

Me, too. I didn't enjoy him winning all those races and championships, but I can't deny his awesome talent and ability. I'm praying he makes a good recovery.

SmoothieX was being rude (as usual for him) too by asking his question instead of just Googling the guy or reading the article or title of the OP, which gives all the context you really need, but he had the good sense to at least let it go after his first couple posts. You continued on dominating the entire discussion with 12 posts, way more than anyone else in the thread, including those who genuinely just wanted to talk about the man himself. I can't believe that was accidental on your part, and if it was, you really need to learn to let things go when multiple people are telling you you're being incredibly rude.

It doesn't make you a bad poster or destroy your twelve years of posting history here or whatever other reasoning you were using to excuse your behavior, but next time you need to learn to take a hint.

Infraction for trolling. Comments to PM.

JoeZhang, I know the PM you received was rude and unnecessary and was a continuation of rude and unnecessary posts in this thread, but it's against the rules to post private messages without the author's permission. Since you apparently weren't aware of that and deleted it before it was online very long, I'll let it go with a verbal warning this time, but please don't do it again.

Never was a nickname more appropriately awarded to a sportsman than The Red Baron to Michael Schumacher.

It really is the perfect description for him in every way, from his dastardly brilliance, to his teutonism and even the colour of his most famous car.

Never heard that one. To the fans (at least in Germany) he is simply known as Schumi.

Rain Meister is a more familiar name to me. Some small glimmer of good news, too, since it's been reported there is a small improvement in his condition. Let's hope it continues. :)
