Aren't you supposed to hate the Mets as a cross town rivalry or something?
Remember, he's not from NYC. I don't think the same rules of fandom apply to people who choose a team rather than grow up in the town.

I'll take 2/3 against Atlanta. Obviously a sweep would have been better.

Apparently you missed his reaction after he through the pitch when he went to his knees and could barely watch and the face showed someone who was almost shitting himself because the pitch did hit someone in the head. Doesn't seem like a guy who was acting like a bitch as you say, but someone who was very regretful and sorry for what he did.

If it was *only* that - Cain's reaction immediately after the fact - I might agree. The cap waving was STILL out of line, though. *That's* what I have a problem with. Don't tell me that he was waving at Giants fans or anything like that, because Cain wasn't even looking at who he was waving at. He was flailing his cap around like he was swatting a fly or something...

The pitch got away from the guy.

Why is that an excuse?

Remember what I just said about drunk drivers. If a *car* 'gets away' and hits somebody, the driver will be held accountable - even if it's an accident. So why do pitchers get off so easily? Wright could have been killed...remember what happened to Natasha Richardson?

Why ISN'T it an excuse? It's part of the game. If it did get away from him, like it does with any pitcher, what exactly are you punishing? The pitcher didn't make a decision that led to the beaning, except the decision to throw a pitch, which kinda MUST happen or there's no ballgame.

Drunk driving is a piss poor example because the drinking and then the driving were CHOICES that led to the accident.

When a pitcher hits a player with a wild pitch (unintentionally of course, purpose pitches obviously don't count), he didn't do anything but what he was supposed to do, throw the ball in the direction of the strike zone.

Hitters getting hit by pitches is part of the game. Has been from the start. It's going to happen when you stand right next to an area where someone is throwing things at 80-100 mph.

You can't punish pitchers for hitting batters unless the pitcher takes time to call out the batter, tell him the next one is coming for his head, and then promptly throws straight at the guy's noggin. Other than that, you can't punish pitchers. It doesn't make any sense.

Agreed.

You can tell when it's in retaliation, and sometimes the pitcher gets thrown out of the game if it's obvious.

But in the end, you have a guy throwing a hard sphere 90 miles an hour from 60 feet away trying to hit a box about one foot by two feet. It's a testament to major league control that batters aren't hit more often.

Blegh, I hope the Red Sox pull out of this slump, and soon. They've even lost the Wild Card lead. :scream:

Though I'm kind of getting the feeling that this just isn't their year, anyway.
And no help from the Twins tonight (big surprise, since they lost to the likes of Cleveland).

However, there's a good bit of season left, so it's not over like some would have you believe.

Carelessness? Loss of control?

And why do you think they wear batting helmets?

There's only so much they can do.. obviously those helmets didn't work as well as they were supposed to this time, did they? If they had, Wright would still be playing.

When a 90+ fast ball gets away, there really isn't a whole lot you can do except hope it doesn't hit somewhere important.

Fecal matter occurs. I watched a player a couple of years ago get taken off the field with a broken femur after a defensive play turned south. Was that intentional, too? Because I really don't think his teammate wanted to do something monumentally stupid like break a teammate's leg and take him out for over a season. After years of watching that scumsucking weasel Clemens and that (insert string of expletives here) Pedro go at it, intentional gets pretty easy to spot. That didn't even look like it was an attempt at a brushback pitch, IMO.

I agree, there's still plenty of time left, but this year just doesn't feel "right" to me anyway. Oh well, we'll see.
...and the Nats sign Stephen Strasburg! :techman:
For way too much money. Rookie contracts in sports are ridiculous.

Well, Papelbon gave me quite a few scares tonight (several times I thought I was watching Dice-K pitch given the number of walks issued), but the offense was able to squeeze by. I'll take it.

Most drunk drivers don't intentionally go out and get in wrecks, yet we still throw the book at them...

Yes, because making a mistake when releasing a fastball and having its flight go awry is totally identical to making the conscious decision to get drunk and then get behind the wheel of a car.

Holy God, I know you have a boner for New York, but your overreaction is ridiculous.

Okay, I was wrong about the pitch. I admit it.

But I still think it looked bad for Cain to be waving his cap around like that. They say he was waving at Giants fans in the stands - well, from what I can tell, he wasn't even LOOKING at who he was waving at. That gesture just showed bad taste, IMHO.
