Major League Baseball 2009

I'm surprised they left Burnett out there as long as they did. He obviously didn't have it from the get go. Utley is a freak out there!

Anyone have thoughts on tomorrows matchup of Martinez and Pettitte (probable at this point). I don't know if Pettitte will be back next year (I'd bet that he would be, though), but if he isn't, then this would be an amazing crowning achievement. I'd love to be at the game.

Yankees did this on the purpose to losing the game last night, so they could go back to Bronx to finish this game once and for all, they're toying with Phillies, I'm telling you!

^ How appropriate for a baseball thread, as that particular question seems to have come right out of the proverbial left field...

Actually, it kind of makes sense, in that the Yankees are the biggest of big businesses in MLB, outspending their closest rival by nearly 80MM this year.

I suspect it was asked with no small bit of irony.

Oh, that. Right.

In answer to Aragorn's question, I personally am rather ambivalent towards big business. As for the Yankees - they are my favorite team, I don't particularly care how rich they are. All I do care about is that they play well and win. Nothing wrong with wanting that, is there? And as I keep saying, they made their money through entirely legitimate means, and Steinbrenner puts that money right back INTO the team. I don't see a downside to that.

Other than inflating the market and pricing everyone else out when it comes time to retain/ lure away free agents, there's nothing wrong with it.

There have been plenty of free agents over the years who *haven't* signed with the Yankees, so pardon me if I don't shed a bucketful of tears over that.

I mean, if the problem was as serious as you believe, then the Yankees would - by definition - have all the best players, wouldn't they? And even I admit that they don't. Clearly, then, some great players aren't signing with them. Some are. In the end, it works itself out.

^ And I'm sure Rangers, Royals and Blue Jay fans agree with you.

Also, not all ballplayers are mercenaries.

Don't think I haven't wanted the Yankees to grab Roy Halladay. As long as the Jays still have him, they are hardly in a position to whine. :p

As for the Royals...I have a lot of respect for them, in fact if it weren't for my touristy love for New York, I probably would BE a Royals fan since they are the closest major league team to where I live. And of course Alex Gordon (along with Joba Chamberlain) used to play for the Husker baseball team.

Also, not all ballplayers are mercenaries.

Quite right. Some of the questionable negotiating tactics can probably be blamed on their agents, especially those named Scott Boras...

This is exactly the point. The Yankees made their money and put it back in the team. Toronto could do the same thing, but as I have always said, "Steinbrenner likes baseball more than he likes money, whereas Rogers likes money more than baseball." For those who don't know, Rogers is one of the biggest businesses in Canada. They are a media mega conglomerate owning cable TV, Rogers Sportsnet (4 channels), cable and wireless phone services, cable internet services, countless magazines, Skydome (I much prefer that over the Rogers Center), and of course the Jays. The profits recorded by all the media entities combined is an incredible amount. Considering the profit they do make and the now near parity of the Cdn and US dollar, they could easily add to the payroll. The simple fact is they don't want to, especially after the death of Ted Rogers (the family patriarch). It has been said that the Jays won't be abandoned (we'll see), but it has also been made abundantly clear that Rogers Corp will look to see how the Jays "fit" within its business interests. Funny thing is - Rogers owns the dome, owns the team, owns the networks that broadcast the games. It seems like simple math to me. Put more money into a team that has a chance to win, which will increase viewership of their channels, which will bring in more ad dollars, and will increase people through the turnstiles. In other words, it'll make them even more money - something that they are very much interested in. I must not know something about simple math.

^ Rogers actually owns the Jays? I didn't know that. Do they own the Argos as well?

Very excited about tonight. GO YANKEES! I think Pettitte will be able to finish the series tonight. True, he hasn't pitched on three days rest in a couple of years, but I know he can do it. :techman:

Nope, although the Argos play at Skydome, they are owned by a couple of Toronto businessmen.

I am very excited about tonight too, with Pettitte on the mound. I would love to be at the game!! The wife and I will be watching instead on Roger's Sportsnet. Go figure.

A very interesting matchup tonight. A well-rested Pedro going against short-rested Petite. If the Phillies can get to Pettitte early, they might be able to stretch this series to seven games. It'll be interesting to see which manager's strategy works out.
