Love it. Music still hasn't wowed me. But none of the Trek themes have. TNG just ripped off TMP. DS9 and VOY themes were lethargic, dull and uninspired. And ENT's theme was utter shit. I'd just as soon Discovery pull a Babylon 5 and modify both theme and graphics each season.
I, too, see the link to classic Bond intros. The only thing missing would be silhouetted naked women. The theme seems to be discovery. Symbolized through scientific sketches we see discovery of new technology, new forms of life, new cultures, new space phenomena. But also the discovery of self symbolized through the eye and Burnham's face. Considering what we know about the show it fits perfectly. It's also different than the other Star Trek title sequences. Which is cool in itself, I think.
So you think the sketch of a handgun signifies discovery. Well, ok then... I think it's interesting how biased we already are. I didn't expect to be wow'd and I wasn't. When I saw that @M had posted, I knew it would be a raving review, and it was.
Is this really the opening sequence? Horrible, even worse than the bland music. I can live with it though because I think the actual show will be great.
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't meant as criticism. It's just that you're obviously predisposed to love it while I was expecting a meh. I'm being pretty critical but I think I'm still very open to a positive surprise. If the show is actually good, it can win me over, for sure.
It is a war show, so the weapons are clearly going to be center stage to a large extent. I'd rather it not be a war show at all, but it is what it is.
A phaser and a batleth? In a sequence involving building the ship, exploring, a communicator, a vulcan salute? Not sure I see any particular emphasis. NERDGASM!
I'm sure it must seem that way. But as a graphic designer who works with creative people and their work every day I'm actually pretty critical. I'm honestly judging all I'm seeing with all my knowledge and experience and I don't know, I just like what I like. I wouldn't say I'm predisposed to like everything they're putting out and I have been critical of some aspects. I just choose to focus on positive things and might be predisposed to only post about those. Internet negativity is so tedious.
I think it's a sop to all the long-time Trek fans who are in love with every detail of the visual design of the shows. The props are iconic. The sequence evokes the process of designing Discovery in a sort of meta way. Uh...I'm sorry, what did I just type?
I get that. But it's still Star Trek. I don't hate the intro. I like that they tried to do something different for Star Trek. I would have liked to see a little more outer space in it.
I love the Da Vinci-esque quality of the animation. I despise the theme. Reminds of the most recent Doctor Who title sequence. Great visuals. Awful theme rendition. Russo was a bad choice. Still, I can live with it if the stories are good. The cast names appear on the final version according to Anthony Rapp. I was fascinated by the inclusion of the TOS phaser as it morphs into the Discovery version.
