Just checked and LIVE has the Mafia 2 demo available for download (am at 50%) so I thought it deserved a thread for thoughts/reviews of the demo to be posted. From what I hear its also on STEAM & PSN too :techman:.

Just played demo and  once again I am letdown after months of anticipation just another fucking day in the gaming world of screw ups...

The game looks decent but theres still the annoying and ugly fade in the background with rough edges. The city feels less real than Liberty City in GTA 4 and the driving is even worse. The cars handle like tanks but the AI cars drive as light as feathers when going round corners..FFS if you get the driving wrong you the games dead already before you even get to the shooting. Also when you drive you get these well judders that pop camera centrally its fucking AWFUL :scream:

The FPS system is ok but nothing special but the biggest problem is the camera is way too close to the character and you move slow and akwardly. Too many games these days have characters who feel sluggish when instead they should me smooth to move around. The characters/script seems fine and the voice acting is good too but I just don't understand how Game Devs make stupid mistakes, I mean they cannot of played this game and thought yeh its great.

Reviews of demo around the net are very mixed too especially in Gamespot forums plus OXM UK reviewed the game giving it only 7 out of 10

:( another game that was all talk and no substance

Yeah, I'll be saving my money. If it's one thing I know about myself is that I have very (VERY) little patience with wonky, schizo camera controls. When you're in the middle of a firefight you shouldn't also have to fight with the f*#$ing camera.

It looks decent enough and there's a fair amount of detail and I did like the little odds and ends (car washes, diners, etc...all fairly typical of the genre by now), but the city still felt kinda empty and sparse and the map (even the redded out parts) seems on the small side. The cars handle like ships with wheels (and no, not in a 1950's "realistic" way, but it a sucky way). It's worse than in GTAIV (how is that even possible?).

I know this is going to be an odd complaint but I must say there's too much shit to bump into while going through this level (or even in Vito's house). During the actual shootout, I found myself bumping into so much shit I could barely make out where the f*ck I was at any given time. I'm all for realism and details in these settings, but please make it practical. You don't need every single pipe, crate, box, pothole, gate and other piece of random crap in the world to "immerse" yourself in a game environment. Especially when said immersion makes it nigh on impossible to actually play the f*cking game.

All in all, not godawful but a fairly average and (considering the hype) disappointing experience. I often wonder myself as well whether the devs actually play these games. If I worked on this game, I'd be embarrassed.

Yeah, I'll be saving my $60.

Hmm, is it really that bad? The original was utterly fantastic, but of course it's been so long that it's doubtful much of the original talent is involved.

I quite enjoyed the demo for what there was of it, basically seems to have everything the first one had, behind the shoulder view, driving cars of the era, and plenty of gun fights and car chases.

I certainly will be getting it a some point.

Also the main story is a rumored 10 hours even with side stuff that could make it longer I find that just too short especially comapred to GTA 4's length.

I know the release date is really close, but the devs seem to suggest, with the whole idea that this level was specifically designed for the demo, that this is not exactly the final product, which I hope is true. If they ironed out some of the more obvious gripes, then there's nothing stopping Mafia 2 from being at least as good as the original.

Priority #1 - Fix the damn camera!
