Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

Someone was arguing with me that the character archetypes/dynamics that have been described so far is ripping off Red Dwarf. I personally don't see it.
On the upside, their observation isn't turning them off from the show, they claim they're still excited to watch it, so I guess that's a positive?

In 2380, they can have cameos from everything Berman-era as well as Picard characters. I can 100% picture them teaming up with Ensign Raffi, Captain Kira, Seven of Nine or (ulp!)Neelix.

Quibbling over details: Raffi would likely have been a Lt. Commander as of 2380. Kira, maybe a captain or commodore by then? Seven could appear depending on who-knows-what. Neelix...if the Cerritos gets out to Delta Quadrant space?

Have we gotten a first name for Rutherford yet?

I think I've been able to find full names for all the other characters, except this one...just listed as "Rutherford."

The text makes it sound as though it was a design experiment more than a job for the show. But it could go either way.

It's think it means more that the job for the show was to experiment with which color scheme would look best for that character. Not with whether that character is worth having. It's like the concept art they do for a movie when they're trying to decide how a cgi character/object should look.

The text I'm referring to comes before the color exploration. "I wanted to delve into creating a wholly original character within the show style and play with their main cast interactions[...]"
Like I said though, could go either way. We'll know for sure when the show comes out. ;)

Nice bit of continuity having a Xindi on the crew. I wonder if we'll ever see a female? Do they have females?? I'd get a kick out them twisting a conspicuously all-male Xindi cast in ENT into something like the Moclans in Orville.

Do you mean female Xindi in general or Reptilians in particular? If in general, the Aquatic representative on the Council was female. Also, Degra was said to have a wife and daughter. As for the Reptilians, I believe Commander Dolim was said to have a daughter.

IIRC, the Xindi Insectoids are said to be all one gender.

I forgot about the Aquatics and references to females. All the Reptilians and Sloths we ever saw were male and that's always stuck with me.

the Xindi character was given a pretty well-rounded personality with focus on interaction with the leads. Seems an odd thing to put that kind of effort into something that is little more than a design experiment.

Very possibly, but "All in the Family" and "Three's Company" also credited British comedies due to sufficient similarity... most shows do get influenced by others... that might be one reason some are skeptical but are still interested in seeing what it's going to show.

But it's hard to say, at least based on what's been told in articles, that the one guy is somewhat influenced by Arnold J Rimmer in being "by the book" and getting everything wrong. (Or Sheldon Cooper... he wouldn't go near gagh either. Most humans wouldn't, not without reading up on biology courses to find out what eating live serpent worms might do to one's innards... but Dr Pulaski would always take any known antidote preemptively. She and Riker were the alpha explorers for sure. :) )

And as none of the other characters has been talked about, the chances that one's a mechanoid and another evolved from a pet seems unlikely...

Milk while the cow still moos, definitely. Not since the late-1990s has Trek been flooding the pasteurized quality moo juice... only 20th century Trek didn't branch out into comedy, and let the skit shows of the time do that...

Of course, Futurama's latter days had one block of episodes divvied between two seasons...

Mariner must be a klutz as well or else Boimler wouldn't be reacting like that... but it's a parody cartoon, it does look like it's going to revel in comedy. 21st century Trek really wants to insert its name into every genre... even self-parody. This will be interesting to observe. :D
