Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

Somewhat surprising they aren't setting this in the TOS era as that would have the most recognisable and popular designs for non fans. On the question of "canon", I agree with those saying they should let this series do its own thing. Moreover, it seems silly making future live action Trek writers possibly having to take into consideration what takes place on a cartoon barely anyone will watch.

Let's face it. TPTB won't abandon the concept of "On-screen = Canon" until their marketing surveys tell them that things have gotten so bad that any new show will have to abandon previous canon if it has to have any hope of success.

This is probably not happening right now because their research probably tells them that majority viewers still prefer onscreen Trek to be canonical backwards and forwards.

It's a little crowded these days. And it's written by a big-time TNG fan, so it's probably the era he wanted to explore most.

I think CBS will promote this series just as heavily as Picard or Discovery, and we can expect good viewership numbers from the All-Access folks. Because of Picard, and the march of time, it's very unlikely that any other shows will be set in the 2375-2390 period, and Lower Decks should have plenty of room to explore even outrageous storylines and major events.

In 2380, they can have cameos from everything Berman-era as well as Picard characters. I can 100% picture them teaming up with Ensign Raffi, Captain Kira, Seven of Nine or (ulp!)Neelix.

They can do both. Just say it's canon, and then do whatever they want. We'll figure it out.

I'd like them to say they are attempting to make the best Star Trek possible, then lock themselves away and come up with good stories.

Jeez, relax. The only thing constraining them on the future side is Picard and the Romulan supernova (and I supposed Disco S3), which can easily be avoided. If indeed they're exploring strange new worlds in this cartoon, there's nothing that has to tie them to past events.

Who isn’t relaxed? I’ve constantly got Klonopin pumping to my brain.

https://comicbook.com/startrek/news/star-trek-lower-decks-characters-mike-mcmahan/ (the quote is from here, but the original interview is from Slashfilm)

So from this article, Mike says the Starfleet characters in the show won't be over the top goofy, they won't be idiots like Morty from R&M, at the end of the day they're still Starfleet Officers, the best of the best.

He tells Slash Film that there are some things from that show that you can't get away with when you're writing for the Star Trek universe. "A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters," McMahan says. "How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can't have a Morty in Star Trek. You can't just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they're very much ingrained in Star Trek."

There's also a couple character breakdowns in the article.

I'm interested in what the ship will look like, we've had a name and class since last July, California-class USS Cerritos, but no picture yet.

Some people here might be happy to know that Eaves might not be working on it (he doesn't have it listed on his website)
