Lost footage of TOS found in Roddenberry vault. Bluray forthcoming.

In reading that Trekcore article again I noticed this promising quote -- "Scott Mantz joined the group on stage, describing his shock and amazement at seeing clips of the newly-restored footage, and talked about some of the content – including an extended scene between Kirk and Edith Keeler from “The City on the Edge of Forever,”
NEWLY RESTORED FOOTAGE -- not "found footage" or "bonus footage " -- but newly restored.
That indicates that they did indeeddo some amount of restoration. Whether to intergrate it or just so it would be more attractive to look at -- time will tell.

I was thinking about the "80 hours of new interviews" they talk about with surviving cast and crew....
That may be a factor in which episodes they chose to feature.
From Corbomite, the Lt Baily actor is alive. From Mirror Lt Moreau is, from Adonais -- Palamas and Apollo. From Return -- Dr Mulhall, from Operation -- Kirk's nephew, from Metamorphosis -- Commissioner Hedford, from City -- Edith Keeler, from Tribbles -- Arne Darven and William Schallert who played Barrett only recenly passed and this project has been going on for a long time.
So if you have footage from an episode featuring an actor and the actor is still alive-- that may factor into what episodes were picked.

Don't read that much into it.

So you are assuming that when he used the word restored he didn't know what he was talking about.

What happens? That someone involved in a particular restoration project calls footage "newly-restored" but it's not restored?
Yes, I'll bet that happens every single time.

Not assuming anything. After sitting in on the panel and seeing some of the footage and talking with those involved with the project, it's safe to say it's not restored.

So it looks like 50 year old film with no restoration because they showed all of it at the con?

My understanding is that the Roddenberry vault consisted of unedited film trims. All the clips they have shown or referred to have been unedited film trims. There's little reason to believe they have deleted scenes that will be -- or could be -- re-edited into the episodes themselves.

What's your definition of "restored"? Do you think it'll look like the HD transfers of the series? No, it's faded, it's raw, there are no sound effects, there's no music. These are 50 year old dailies and trims that were not stored under ideal conditions.

Neil

So they are going to re-release 12 episodes related to the found footage which consists of tiny little trims and no deleted scenes?
LOL. In that case they better not let any copies of the set get into any reviewers hands before release date because who will rebuy those episodes to see tiny little trims? Not me. I'm sure we'll know a lot more in the coming months, but little trims of unrestored footage? No thanks. I'm not basing my purchase on the footage being integrated into the episodes, but the material better damn well be substantial.
Thousands of cans of material that amount to little trims? What a waste of space.

I'm sure the footage is restored, but that doesn't mean it is the quality of the episodes. Restored just means that some effort was put into making it look nicer than how they found it.

It almost sounds like you want to be let down my this set. The Roddenberry Entertainment people were pretty clear about this at Comic-Con (and, I imagine, at Las Vegas). The uncovered footage will be cut into a series of new documentaries about the original series. Some clips will be played in isolation, while others will be played with new interviews over them to provide the necessary context (and to prevent the material from becoming boring).

The way costume tests, uncomposited visual effects, and other outtakes were used in the documentaries found on the Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-Rays is probably similar to what will happen here. (Roger Lay, Jr. has been involved with both projects).

That's what I was hoping for, Tosk, a small amount of select restored material.
It you have a guy holding a clapboard and somebody yells action and someone blows a line or misses a mark -- obviously don't spend a cent restoring that.
If you have a minute long scene extension between Kirk and Edith Keeler that was cut simply for time -- why would you NOT spend some time and money to restore it?
But if these are little trims and not deleted scenes, then who really cares.
My definition of "Holy Grail" isn't little trims of footage. Slightly interesting maybe. Holy Grail? No.

I want deleted scenes. We got a fair amount of background video from Billy Blackburns treasuse chest. Interesting for sure, but I'm not that huge on "making of"
I watch that stuff once and I'm good.
Deleted scenes I love and that's what I was hoping for.
I don't want to be let down -- I want deleted scenes. To me anything else WILL be a letdown.
So my hopes are not too high. Maybe a miracle will happen and we'll get one or two long deleted scenes that somehow survived.
And why include the 12 episodes?
A minute or two of trims from Space Seed warrants including the entire episode?
Just release the documentaries and skip including the episodes which 95% of TOS fans already have in one format or another.

Those deleted scenes, in all liklihood, no longer exist. I wouldn't get your hopes up.

That's what I had thought and the announcement got me thinking there was a chance. But it doesn't seem likely after all.
At least I finally got the Wrath of Khan deleted scenes !
That was a big deal for me.

Because having the episode alonside a found extra scene is cool. You can bet that if CBS released only a disc of extras, fans would be calling out "lazy CBS" on their lousiness in not including eps.

There will always be someone who is buying for the first time, doesn't care about "double dipping", is replacing worn/stolen discs, just became a Trek fan.
