Lost footage of TOS found in Roddenberry vault. Bluray forthcoming.

To a reply from an earlier post about the original cut of WNMHGB, i do have the season 3 blu ray set. However, watching the alternate version of the second pilot u can see a lot of scratches and dirt. To make matters worse the sound is a very weak 2.0. No surround sound for me baby infinity speakers to play. Boo hoo. I meant deleting that stupid min. Message at the very beginning of the episode (or have it an option to play the intro text or not is cool) and cleaning up the master even more and taking the time to upconvert the soundtrack to 5.1 or 7.1 would be nice. It was just CBS being lazy and cheap. I think they rushed it a little bit to have it added on as a special feature. Which is ok but now for the 50th it be cool to go back and clean up the video and upscale the audio.

This new Roddenberry vault blu ray is a mixed bag maybe? We already have the blu ray sets and it seems redundant to simply put 12 episodes as is on the set. Branching the deleted/alternate scenes make more sense. I have a feeling if sales are satisfactory then they might go back and do this. This first blu ray set is a trial prob. To see how it sells. Then from there they might do more with them. Who knows?

It seems silly to include the full episodes on the bluray if they aren't going to take advantage of the branching feature to insert deleted or alternate scenes into the episode. Even if the clips are raw, it seems like the novelty of alternate/optional cuts would be quite a selling feature.

Because now they can make it a multi-disc set and charge more, as opposed to just releasing the new material as a single disc. It's a way to jack up the price with very little extra work on their part.

They probably need a higher price point to cover all the restoration costs. I can't fault them for that, knowing where the home video market is these days.

Fair point. I hadn't considered that. Kinda wish they included it on the massive 50th anniversary set. But I'm sure others would balk at that and I doubt they'd be willing to have the disc in the 50th set AND for sale as a standalone.

If it was an exclusive to that set, fans would definitely be pissed. I am glad they're releasing it separately. Hopefully they do the same for TAS sooner rather than later.

The 'lost footage' I'd love to have seen are the deleted scenes from Elaan of Troyius, featuring Uhura's subplot (given the scarcity of story material for the character in TOS). Sadly that doesn't seem to be among this recovered footage here.

I'm somewhat cautious but excited about this. I love lost things being recovered. Some of the tiny Doctor Who clips that have been retrieved from censors and cine cameras pointed at TV screens make this find seem enormous.

Well they didnt mention what was found. And i do recall at the comic con video that if this does well in sales others will follow. So lets hope this scene was found.

I've always wanted to see that footage as well!

Creating the branching would cost them a lot more money. Instead, they can just dump the existing full episode files on two discs, then dump the "lost" footage on another disc.

Good point, maybe there will be other sets to follow. But in terms of this collection, they said the episodes included are related to the footage recovered, and 'Elaan' isn't among the episode list.

Looks like they have the coda to "Who Mourns..." after all. At least part of it according to Trekcore.
They havr a follow up article with more tantalizing hints.

Very likely not. They picked 12 episodes that much of the material comes from and very likely when you access those episodes the alternate/deleted/behind the scenes footage will listed as bonus material.
The same way a movie has a deleted scene section -- each episodes will have supplementary material section.
That's my guess.
I know some folks are thinking there will be many volumes of this vault material, but the fact that the 12 episodes run in filmed order from 3 to 51 makes me think that perhaps 2 volumes is more likely. Volume 2 covering the remainder of season 2 till the end of season 3.
And they will likely throw in any minor material from the non- included episodes in a "catch all" section.
Those are my guesses and my hopes. It would be great if they could do one extended episode version as they did with "Measure of a Man"
I guess that would depend on which episode had a lot cut and if the cut footage was all found and in proper shape to edit in.
Can't wait for more info!

Sounds to me like all the footage is raw - no visual or sound effects, music, ADR. All but the last you can easily do today, but if the footage still looks rough even after cleaning it may not be worth it.

I think this set will be good f us fans. But if u ever watch the preview trailers f the tos episodes then im guessing thats the quality of video we will be watching. So be prepared. I wonder if they can actually remaster the preview trailers or even the bloopers? I know $ is a factor but can they?

These are piecesof film we are talking about.
So yes, they can be cleaned up if they want to spend the money to do so.
They have stated they are actual film stored in cans. Some may be in decent shape and not as much restoration may be needed. Other pieces may be in terrible shape and they won't bother -- just scan it and put it on the discs as an interesting bit of Trek history.

Would like to do so, but the guy just wont go away. I hear he (Cushman) has a Lost in Space book coming out.

Yes he does. Just released. I bought it & like it. Very interesting history of Lost in Space, including why it devolved from exciting action/adventure to nonsensical campfest. (It was CBS' insistence and the memos are there).

Knew it was just a matter of time before this board posted about the new Cushman book, and groaned. (Seriously the new Lost in Space book is worthwhile if you're a fan of that show, which I am.)
