Lost footage of TOS found in Roddenberry vault. Bluray forthcoming.

Yes this is kick ass news. The only prob. Is that they gonna rush the release this year f the 50th. Then a year or 2 later release an updated version to coincide with either beyond on blu ray or the new trek 4 theatrical release.

As stated earlier, paramount and cbs prob. Didnt realize these existed. They prob. Assumed that Roddenberry had cut them all up back in the 70s. It would be nice to see the blooper reels finally cleaned up and released also. Even if they not high quality, they did release the episode previews after all. Im sure a vol. 2 will follow dedicated to season 3. Shame nothing on elaan of troyius though. I would love to see that big deleted scene. They need to go back and remaster the extended second pilot also. Such a shame.

This is only the beginning....more sets and editions will follow im sure.

Actually I think they "discovered" these 9 years ago and have been cataloging, scanning and cleaning up the film and also filming the parts for the features. I think this has been planned for the 50th for some time so it should not be rushed in anyway. I just hope these are more than 5 min. features and I hope they really give us some meat.

If this discovery includes separate optical effects elements could these potentially be rescanned into HD to give HD TOS with original effects? :)

Yes i stand corrected. I posted before i watched the Roddenberry vault panel from comic con. My bad.

I just hope its a lot of "new" footage, outtakes, deleted scenes, alternate takes and bloopers. It would be so disappointing if the total runtime of footage was like a mere 15 min. And the rest was just interviews etc. Etc.

It sounds like a great 50th anniversary celebration though..

I, too, wish to see the new footage inserted into the episodes, as I already own the whole series. I hate having to buy something that I already have in order to get different features.

Sounds great!
I was REALLY hoping however that whomever owns the original 35 or 16mm prints of the bloopers (presumably Rod Roddenberry) would rescan them, and clean them up for blu-ray.

They would look amazing.
This will be good as well (depending on the condition of the clips)

Good news.

The only one I really wish I could see would be the original cut of Vina's dance scene from The Cage. Judging by the script it had a lot more depth than the way it was cut in the final version.

I wonder how much more footage would be available today had they not cut up the clips and sold them through Lincoln Enterprises. That said, I bought a couple of those puppies myself back in the day -- still have them, too!

Was he cutting up the original clips? Or was he copying them, cutting up the copies and selling them instead? That way you'd have an inexhaustible source of income, at least until all the original clips you had were worn down to nothing. And from the sound of 'hundreds of film reels,' Gene was nowhere near that point.

As I understand it, Paramount would have discarded the work prints after the show was canceled. They would have been lost forever, never seen. So, ironically, Gene and Majel saved those film frames by stealing them and selling them to the fans. And now a large number of those work print frames have been scanned and put on the Internet.

To Nightowl1701: Lincoln Enterprises wasn't copying film clips. They were selling frames of the original work prints. It was a finite supply, but again, distributing those clippings to fans ended up preserving a lot of ST history that Paramount would have destroyed. I don't know, but I doubt if anybody has work prints from Mission Impossible, for example. Studios don't preserve that stuff long-term.

Yes, there was no copying. In 7th grade, my band teacher bought a few and showed them to us. Each clip was one frame of film (35mm?) in the center, but approximately half of the previous and subsequent frames on either end. So, they simply snipped the film in the middle of the frames.

It seems silly to include the full episodes on the bluray if they aren't going to take advantage of the branching feature to insert deleted or alternate scenes into the episode. Even if the clips are raw, it seems like the novelty of alternate/optional cuts would be quite a selling feature.
