Levar Burton to be the next host of Jeopardy?

One of the things I used to love about living near Philly was that WPVI, the local ABC affiliate, is (to the best of my knowledge) the only station in the U.S. that airs Jeopardy! before Wheel of Fortune. So after each show ended, I'd go online at 7:31 and say, "Did you see how they all blew that Final Jeopardy ques—" and my friends who lived in other markets would all be "SHUT UP, SPOILERS!!"
My local affiliate plays Jeopardy! at 7, too. I think it always has.

I'd always heard Philly was the only market where they did that. Nice to know it happens elsewhere, too. I always preferred Jeopardy! as the lead-in; finish watching the 6:30 news, switch over to Jeopardy!, then do whatever the rest of the evening. If I had to twiddle my thumbs for half an hour while Wheel was on, I'd probably watch it a lot less.

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure it's been like that since the 90s because I just remembered that when I moved to Nevada in '92 for four years, I noticed the airing order was different. I think that was when I first became aware of local affiliates and syndicated television as a kid.

Uh, no, KABC in Los Angeles airs Jeopardy first, then Wheel. Unless it's delayed by roundball (or by the roundball draft). But what you want is a royal fizzbin.

At any rate, I didn't find the young woman with the close-cropped hair of a color that does not occur in nature to be particularly obnoxious. I've seen plenty of contestants who could out-obnoxious her. Including one Asian fellow who was champion for an annoyingly long time.

KWWL in Dubuque and WMTV in Madison air Jeopardy at 4:30, local news at 5, NBC Nightly News at 5:30, local news at 6 and Wheel at 6:30.

Same schedule here in the Twin Cities, except the CBS affiliate has Wheel.

I haven't been able to watch Jeopardy--or any broadcast television, for that matter--ever since I moved back to Iowa a few months ago, because the closest NBC transmitter is in goddamn Waterloo, like 80-some miles away, and my antenna doesn't get anything.

RATFARTS!

Here in the Pacific Northwest it's always been 'Wheel' followed by 'Jeopardy'.
My Mother who lives in Colorado 'Jeopardy' airs first followed by 'Wheel'.

Good article about Mike Richards and whether he's actually a good selection for Jeopardy.

I'm not familiar with him beyond his current role, but his last hosting gig in the past was a reality show. That's not really someone I'd want at the head of the world's most popular trivia game show. As a host, I think Jeopardy needs someone that can inspire confidence. As a whole, I think the whole search and the resulting reveal has been messy. A Producer who ends up getting the job after winning the search he's been running. Umm yeah, classy.

Excellent article with an outside perspective on the whole thing and really drives home all of the issues I've had with Mike Richards, how he was "selected," and the marketing behind it.

To be clear, yes, I've been adamant about wanting LeVar Burton as the host since the beginning, but I was fully prepared for him not getting the gig and that Ken Jennings would, no matter how underwhelming and disappointing that result would be for me.

But what has actually happened has been an absolute mess and has killed any interest I have in Jeopardy! in its projected form.

When I lived in Chattanooga, it was WoF at 7 and Jeopardy at 7:30. Now, Jeopardy airs at 2:30 pm or something ridiculous. Must not be a ratings getter here.

It airs at 6-6:30p on the sister station to the main CBS station in the DFW area. IIRC, the station was the UPN station back in the 1990s, but back then Jeopardy! was on the ABC station.

And, for all of the pre-angst, I thought Joe Buck was one of the better guest hosts. He seemed to do the transition between camera and players better than any of the others and his engagement with the players seemed natural and authentic. I'd take him over Mike Richards without hesitation.

Yeah, I'd have preferred Ken over Mike Richards if it had to come to that. The whole thing has ended up feeling quite sloppy. The other thing is, I kind of feel bad for those who were left feeling like they had a chance. From what I can see, it maybe was always going to be Mike Richards as main host, with one of the guest-hosts chosen for the special shows. But if that's the case, they should have been up-front about it. I think they did what they did to get their ratings, nothing more. That actually brings up another question: If they were doing a search that didn't matter, then why couldn't they just change up celebrity hosting for the special shows?

Like for instance, we know now that LeVar probably wasn't suited for full-time Jeopardy, but maybe he would have been better in short spurts, same with any others who were in this search. So, the result of all this has actually felt a little backwards IMHO.

The Ringer has a new piece up about Mike Richards, including details about a podcast he used to do during his tenure on The Price Is Right. A podcast on which Richards said things which pretty much put the lie to his denials of the harassment and the sexually discriminatory environment detailed in the various lawsuits against the show. Sony claims to have been unaware of the podcast's existence.

Does nobody do their due diligence anymore?

Realizing the he was the producer of the first few seasons of the 'The Price is Right' with Drew Carey makes me think Drew succeeded in spite of, not because of Mike Richards; and, even though the show formula, the show and Drew improved once Mike Richards was gone.

Yeah, I saw this story pop up last night and read parts of it. None of this surprises me anymore, even Sony's inability either to not properly vet Richards or actually believe that his past shitty behavior wouldn't come out so quickly (or at all).

The real question is whether all of these revelations actually change anything. I hate to say it but I'm doubtful.

I can't remember the last time I watched The Price Is Right, though it was probably during the Barker years. Was there a certain point when you thought the show and Drew improved? Because Richards was there from 2008-2018.
