Spoilers Let’s talk about the destruction of Trek utopia…

I never really understood why people get so hung up on swearing in Star Trek. I'm fine with it as long as it's not just swearing for swearing's sake.

Because swearing is so barbaric and dystopian. That is why modern humanity swears. We are nothing but a bunch of barbarians, completely unredeemable in the face of GR's utopian vision. The fact that Star Trek reflects the uncomfortable nature of humans means that is complete wrong.

I joke but only slightly. I was watching an 80s sitcom and was struck by an idea. That for some, reality is so unbearable that escapism is the only answer. So, Star Trek is exploring human foibles, as well as the positives. And I prefer seeing people overcoming such weaknesses rather than being told they evolved.

Data saying "shit" in GEN clearly shows the late 24th century was a dystopia. Or at least heavily influenced by Jay and Silent Bob.

In the spirit of rebelling against Dystopia, I'm not wearing a button-up shirt. I have a shirt with a zipper...

... wait a minute. Zippers are against Gene's Vision too.

Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

This is the 50th time you’ve brought this beating-a-dead-horse topic up, and this is the 50th time I’m going to ask you this question: Please enlighten us all as to how you would have had Picard dress?

(And just for the record, you never answered me the last 50 times I asked you.)

If ST:P was REAL Star Trek, they would have Picard exclusively wear neon colored jumpsuits, tin foil sports outfits, genuinely horrific retrofutristic sweaters, and fabrics that look like they were peeled off the floor of a 90s bowling establishment or a bus seat. All aforementioned outfits must look like they were made with a budget of $10 and whatever awful novelty fabrics the costume people had lying around.

Unironically, I want to see the return of Picard's tasteful deep V neck + booty shorts sleepwear in ST:P.

I guess you didn’t like it when Data said ‘oh shit’

Get over yourself. The only reason they didn’t swear is because of network rules. A few fucks isn’t hurting anyone.

They are using it just it just to use it now. The lexicon is 20th and 21st century. It's out of place in star trek and violates canon.

There is simply nothing new here. Hatred has pretty much colored any meaningful conversation. Canon should sue for abuse.

Lmao no it freaking doesn’t. Get over yourself.

Them just speaking English identical to how we speak now is 20th/21st century lexicon.

By the 24th century the English language should sound different. Your argument holds no water. Look how much English has changed in the past 300 years.

It’s just a TV show.

I get the argument if the characters saying "yo that shit's the bomb" or whatever the kids are saying these days. But swearing in general has been around for a while and probably will be around for a while.

Somewhat unrelated, I have always liked when shows have made up future slang. BSG and Firefly did it. That's never really been in Trek though.

Because they wanted to swear more which Trek largely doesn't.

Also, it makes me laugh that damn, bastard, hell, and even Picard's French swearing are ok but fuck is a canon violation. I would love to understand such a standard but it feels very one note, designed to be offended at every possible turn.
