Legalizing marijuana. I don't get it.

Marijuana doesn't kill brain cells. Common misconception.

I don't use it myself but both of my older sisters and one of my younger brother use it. And guess what, they're brilliant.

My oldest is television/music/film critic for our newspaper. She also does the sports reporting on the 5 o'clock news.
The other sister is a mathematician who teaches trig/pre calc to high school and college students in Iowa.
And my little brother is a software designer who graduated from MIT.

Oh yes, they are so stupid.

I have no issue with people using it, I however get migraines from the smell so I avoid it. There's nothing wrong with it. Alcohol and cigarettes are much more harmful and deadly, and that's from my husband who's a doctor.

There's a substitute drug called "Spice" that's legal. It causes hallucinations and and seizures. Marijuana has however never been linked to such things and it's illegal in some states. Most fatal car accidents involve alcohol and it's legal. Lung cancer is one of the most common killers today and cigarette's are legal.

What does that tell you?
This post FTW.

I'm obviously a minority on this issue and maybe it will become legal in some fashion, but I definitely do not agree with the idea of legalized recreational drugs.
Are you against freedom of religion as well? Because one can hardly have a discussion about psychoactive hemp without its thousands of years as a shamanic plant.

Okay. So there is no doubt that weed is addictive, just like alcohol and tobacco.

Marijuana is less addictive than caffeine, a substance people consume in mass quantities every damn day.
Stop drinking coffee: hours upon hours of migraines. Stop smoking weed: Gee, I wish I had some weed. Oh well.
How did that initiative fail in California? Makes no sense.
Because propaganda works, and its been going on since our grandparent's generation at least. People just don't understand. Even well-meaning centrists who are for medical use, but not for jazz, really just don't know the subject. You can drive on (smoked, not eaten)pot. Safely. There is no increase in accidents. The main difference is that the stony driver goes a bit slower. Jesus Christ, we can't have that!

I think it also failed because opponents were more motivated than proponents. As I understand it (I could be mistaken), the requirements to get a prescription are fairly lax. Those who don't have a prescription can still obtain it about the same as in other states (or more easily). Therefore, the incentive to go out and vote for full decriminalization isn't there. While those opposed to decriminalization might see it as almost a line in the sand and rally to vote against it.

Withdrawal for addicts to pot can cause headaches, little or no sleep. While the affects only last a couple of days, its unsettling for some addicts going through withdrawal, not all.

This is going to be very counter-intuitive logic, so bear with me.

Marijuana should be illegal because it is not overtly harmful.

Anything that is enjoyable and causes mental impairment needs to have a reason not to do it, or there's a good change people will do it too much.

With any other drug if you use it to excess you will harm yourself. But its impossible to OD on marijuana. It may not be very physically addictive but as with anything that feels good its mentally addictive. The longer it is legal the more people will do it, and think its not a big deal, the more the stigma fades and the more widespread it will get. Some people will be able to handle recreational marijuana use responsibly but lots of people won't.

We can all agree that being stoned all the time is a bad thing. As a society it in in our interest to keep the number of people with impaired judgement at a minimum. Drinking to excess gives you a painful hangover, or if you don't stop, kills you with alcohol poisoning. Cigarettes and caffeine don't affect judgment. Harder drugs will kill you if you OD. Marijuana has no natural mechanism restricting use, and that's dangerous.

Actually, I don't think you can get everyone here to agree that having people stoned all the time is a bad thing.

^ chocolate is the same way. Releases the same happy chemicals for people who get addicted to it. Its the same way with exercise, sex. Anything done to excess is a bad thing. Impaired is what your are when your drunk, people can operate just fine when catching a buzz off of weed. If there was no, hey I have to stop, there wouldn't be people going to rehab for it. There is no way to predict that if it became legal people become recluse and just hot box where ever. People would still go to work, still be parents. Yes there would be the minority who are immature, who would abuse it, but in that case it would eventaully make them homeless. The majority would use it like having a beer after getting done a whole day of yard work.

What about driving? I don't know anyone who "catches a buzz off weed" the equivalent of having one glass of wine. People smoke it and get stoned and then drive.

^ varies by individual. If you are a frequent smoker, you tend not to drive in the first place unless you have to. The people who do drive, like was said before, its not like acohol, you still have musclar control, and only slightly delayed reaction. don't believe me, look up the statistics about how many deaths have been caused by car accidents, because the driver was stoned.

Have you ever been stoned? It is bullshit that it doesn't effect driving. And you know it is the attitude that "it is okay to drive" that just enrages me around stoners that I know. It's accepted that driving while intoxicated is dangerous, we need to make that step for being stoned too.

And yes I am completely in favor of legalization, but this lack of realism hurts the argument. I've had people tell me they are better drivers while stoned. Right. Just like you are better conversationalists in your mind.

You have me wrong. I believe that no-one should drive when in an altered state of mind. No I haven't ever been stoned and if you look at my first post, you will see I never plan to be. I was just saying compared to drunk driving, its not as bad but still bad. Some poeple are actaully better conversationalists when stoned, it lets the walls down and some people come right out.

Well put, teacake.

I support legalization, but I also support treating driving while stoned in a manner similar to driving while intoxicated. Cars are dangerous machines and there is no justification for increasing the likelihood of an accident that could ruin or end the lives of many people all at once.

Actually some time ago I figured out the perfect response to these people who try and convince me that driving while stoned is fine (and I've heard this from all ages 20's - 40's). I just ask them, "so you would be fine if your child was driven somewhere by someone who is stoned?" This generally shuts them up.

Some poeple are actaully better conversationalists when stoned, it lets the walls down and some people come right out.
Uh huh, and the same thing happens when you are drunk. It's not always real though, often emotions are quite exaggerated.

People react very differently, some people really do say stuff that is totally out of character and is not "truthful words". Stuff they regret later and can't even understand why they said it. Or they say something that while true is not of the huge import that it seemed when they said it while drunk, lol.

So what?

And Cigarettes and Caffeine, being stimulants, DO affect judgment, maybe not as drastically as alcohol does but they do happen, people who're hopped up on caffeine may work faster but are also prone to make more mistakes because they're not working efficiently.

So that's the reason to keep MJ illegal? That it has no drawbacks? I still call a so-what and a bullshit, alcohol has drawbacks but people build up tolerances or don't care and are still able to drink a lot and become a blight on society.

If MJ was legal it'd be just like alcohol is and there'd be laws against public intoxication, driving while under the influence, committing crimes while under the influence, and working while under the influence. The notion that if pot was legal we'd all be stoned out losers shuffling the streets in our bathrobes looking for Twinkies is ridiculous.

People react very differently, some people really do say stuff that is totally out of character and is not "truthful words". Stuff they regret later and can't even understand why they said it. Intoxication lets down your inhibitions, it doesn't put thoughts in your head that are not already yours. So if a drunk person, or stoned person, says or does something then somewhere inside of them, possibly subconsciously, they have that thought.
