The offical release date is May 1. Most retailers pay no heed to that down here don't know about Canada.

Margaret

Depending on who you buy from, they're usually early. I remember picking up "Orion's Hounds" two weeks before it was officialy scheduled to be launched, as I remember picking up "Unity" before it's supposed launch date as well. Indigo/Chapers/Coles/SmithBooks in Canada do really well in getting these books out early.

It's a big country, and supply varies from region to region. I'm still waiting for Warpath.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I've already purchased the book and have started reading it. Thanks, Margaret, Michael and Andy! Saving Trip has put a big smile on my face. I'm also enjoying the first few chapters that I have read.

Why sir, I have no idea what you are saying! What is this Tattooine and Hutt? And why would the actor in Corvette Summer be in your mind as Trahve?

I liked the reference to 2001, which acknowledged the source right in the dialogue. But the Star Wars stuff was way over the top and went on for far too long, imnsho. Tatooine, Mos Eisley, Jabba the Hutt, the friggin' cantina band, for crying out loud, the Millennium Falcon... how did you guys resist having a couple of lines of dialogue like "That's no moon" and "I'm getting a bad feeling about this"? Even though I am a reliable crank on the subject of in-jokes, I really, really think this one should have been cut.

As for the story in general, it was a decent read, but the emphasis on action meant there was less time for character development. I appreciate the fact that Mayweather got significant page time but we didn't really learn much new about him or the MACOs.

As for the bit that's generating the most attention here... it's not really an important part of the book. As for what comes next, well, I'm curious. But the novel at hand isn't about Trip and TATV, it's about the Xindi, Mayweather, the MACOs, etc.

Re: Last Full Measure Discussion and Review (MAJOR SPOILERS!

Was I the only one who thought the old man was Archer? I didn't realize it was Trip until it mentioned letting history think he was dead 77 years ago, and then it hit me. I loved the line where he says falling down almost made him live up to his old nickname.

Does anyone think the name of the bully who was tormenting the young Malcolm, Leslie Morris, is a sarcastic nod to Les Moonves?

I apprciated the reference to Hurricane Katrina on page 300.

Did the show establish the date of the Xindi attack as March 22, or was it not established and M&M did that? If it was, what am amazing coincidence.

Finally, when Trip says, "so, you were born on the Fourth of July," is that a sign that he is starting to be forgetful...since it was August 12 (which happens to be my mom's birthday)?

I think Trip just meant that George was born on the same date as the Federation was founded. The Fourth of July is considered America's birthday since it's the official date the Declaration of Independence was adopted and created this country, so the day the Federation charter was signed would hold a similiar significance to the people in that time...

I had my suspicions that it was Trip just because of Margaret's comments, but I knew for sure when he talked about helping with the design of the new ship. Trip was the only one of the seven regulars who would logically be doing that.

I considered a variety of possibilities, but when it said he had made notes on Marvick's engineering plans, that narrowed it down considerably.

As I recall, in "The Expanse" NX-01 returned to Earth on April 24 (according to a log entry) after spending roughly a month racing for home. So the attack would've been sometime in late March, and the 22nd is as good a date as any. The only catch is that "Bounty" opened on March 21st according to a log entry, and took roughly two days. I guess we can assume, though, that the subspace signal took a couple of days to reach Enterprise at that distance.

Finally, when Trip says, "so, you were born on the Fourth of July," is that a sign that he is starting to be forgetful...since it was August 12 (which happens to be my mom's birthday)?

No, he was being metaphorical.

The only date given in "The Expanse" is that the NX-01 makes it back to Earth on April 24. However, March 22 is a reasonable assumption for the attack itself (and one I had made myself), as it places the attack as close to "Bounty" (March 21) as possible, allowing the NX-01 a full month for its journey from the frontier back to Earth.

Some of the narrative in the prologue does seem like it could have applied to Archer. The thoughts about what San Francisco was like in the days before the Charter signing seemed like they were based on first-hand experience, which might've pointed to Archer. But the syntax of some of the thoughts/comments seemed more Trip-ish, and the age was more consistent as well.

I did wonder about the age. LFM places Trip's age in 2238 at 121, which means he would have been born in 2117 and would've been 34 when ENT first shipped out. That birthdate is four years earlier than listed in Memory Alpha. However, I don't recall if Trip's age was specifically mentioned during the series -- I always assumed he was in his early 30's at the time.

So August 12 is the day that the Federation Charter/Federation Constitution/Articles of the Federation/Whatever-other-damn-name-the-thing-has was signed?

According to this book, at least. There's no canonical source for that, as far as I know. There are a couple of conjectural dates for it in fandom, but I don't recall if 8/12 is one of them.

Well, yes, I know there's no canonical date, but I say screw canon. ;) Star Trek: Star Charts claimed it was 8 May, actually, but I guess we can presume that in the TrekLitverse, it's 12 August. The only other date I'm aware of was 11 October.

Personally, I prefer 8 May, but 12 August works just fine for me, too...

Re: Last Full Measure Discussion and Review (MAJOR SPOILERS!

^ I thought a poker game on TNG gave a clear description based on the wild cards Troi was declaring, but then again, it could have only meant that the 2's, 6's and aces were wild....yeah, I think that's right. So whatever that episode was, we just need to find a stardate, and then someone can make it work out that it fits one of the described dates.

All she said in the episode was that the card came was called Federation Day because it was based on the numbers in 2161. There was no mention of the day or month of Federation Day, and the episode was never said to take place on Federation Day -- Deanna just pulled the suggestion for the game out of thin air, it wasn't a commemoration or anything.

That'd be "The Outcast," and all that it established was that the Federation was founded in 2161.

Re: Last Full Measure Discussion and Review (MAJOR SPOILERS!

Was there a mention of the date for Federation Day in the episode of VOY where Nellix was having a First Contact day party?

Re: Last Full Measure Discussion and Review (MAJOR SPOILERS!

^^No. Why mention Federation Day when it's First Contact Day?

Re: Last Full Measure Discussion and Review (MAJOR SPOILERS!

^ Thank you to all the above. I figured as much, but wanted to get clarity from people a whole lot smarter than I. :)

Re: Last Full Measure Discussion and Review (MAJOR SPOILERS!

Yay I found it yesterday! This is the first time I've seen a book beat the release date in my part of Canada! I've read the first few chapters...love it so far, but then I've loved all the ENT books
