News Kurtzman: Spock And Filling In Canon

Hopefully there will be a decent explanation for why visiting Talos IV warrants the death penalty. I'm quite eager to see all this Cage stuff.

Yeah. They made a big deal of Adm. Cornwell telling L'Rell that "starfleet does not have a death penalty."

All arguments about how Discovery handles continuity aside, the writers collectively are familiar with past
episodes and mine them for details. I feel like that one was in there for a purpose, since it clearly was either not true, or about to be not true.

I always thought it was because if humans were allowed to visit Talos, they might learn the Talosian power of illusion - and destroy their civilization like the Talosians destroyed theirs.

Indeed, doesn't the "Keeper" say as much in The Cage/Menagerie?

That's certainly the reason implied in the episode, but we have enough leeway to add a different explanation. Of course if they do revisit Talos, the Enterprise, not Discovery has to do it. It's explicit in the episode the Enterprise was the only ship to visit. But they don't specify how many times.

Here is a prediction for season 2: Spock, Sarek, and Pike will not die. No matter what kind of danger they may face they will survive.
Yeah, yeah. UNLESS certain actresses (or in the case of the feature films a certain actor) either wanted out of their contract/didn't want to sign a contract extension) - you can say that for all the Star Trek series. ;)

I mean come on. Lets take TNG's - "Chain of Command" as an example:

- Did you ever really think Ronny Cox/Captain Edward Jellico would be the Captain of the 1701-D for the remainder of Season 6 and Season 7 while you were watching either Part 1 or Part 2?

Again, we all know the main heroes will come out alive in the end. It's the drama of the journey for the story that's being told that holds the audience's interest. If it were just a matter of "Hey they all came out okay at the end...whew!" we probably wouldn't be here talking about it 30 to 50 years later; and would bother re-watching some episodes as much as we do.

Do watching any films made about the time period of WWII cease to hold your interest because you know how the wart turned out, and if they have a knwn General on the field in a critical scene, do you yawn or get bored because you already know if he either died in the battle depicted/lived beyond it?

The whole "It weakens the drama/suspense because we know >X<..." argument IMO is just BS. :)

I actually didn't think DSC was intended as a prequel to TOS as stated above, so that we will stop complaining of its lack of independence.

Is that really the case? I thought it was going to be its own thing, but just set i n the before times; and was now skewing prequel.

W ere it intended as prequel, I guess I would stand corrected.

How could it not be a prequel? It's set before TOS. Even if it never mentioned a single TOS character or event, it would still be a prequel.

Yeah, right. They're 'cashing in' on TOS about as much as they're 'cashing in' with 'Retired Picard' for the TNG fans. ;)

Some might just call it "Using the Star Trek IP to get peolle to watch and make money..." like ALL Businesses (entertainment and otherwise do.

My point? Please explain why using existing TOS characters is more or less 'lazy' than using an existing TNG character to get viewers/subscribers?

At least ST: D has some new and interesting characters to complement the existing ones. What characters are we going to see in the new Picard series? His rest home Nurse perhaps? ;)

I don't mind them using existing characters but their is a difference when you aren't using the orginal actor. On some level you getting people to pay attention on name recognition, alone. Bringing Picard back is bringing something back, more complete with the thing you once loved.

I don't recall who specifically said it or in what forum...but I clearly remember an interview or panel discussion led to a producer being asked "why did you not set the show in the post-Nemesis timeframe" and the answer was that they had stories they wanted to tell in this particular era. That was said very early on...

You'll be shocked when the show turns out to be ""The Young Jean-Luc Picard Chronicles" and Sir Pat is just in the opening acts.

It was Bryan Fuller who said there was a specific story he wanted to tell in that time period.

He also said the story was inspired by an event mentioned in TOS, but I think that went out the window when he left the show.

Yes, I definitely recall that as well. I think the closest thing we got to on that piece was the mention of Donatu V.

A human can be white and hispanic , just ask all those white, germanic, nordic, anglo saxon, celtic humans
"Whiteness" tends to be fluid, depending on the observer. ;) Sometimes it not even about skin color, but things like religion, geography and language!!!!!!

How canb they use the original actor for Spock or Sarek since both have passed away? Casting new actors in lead roles for long running IPs is nothing new.

Look at the Superman IP:
https://www.quora.com/Who-are-all-the-actors-that-played-Superman-in-order
  • Kirk Alyn (1948-1950)
  • George Reeves (1951-1958)
  • Christopher Reeve (1978-1987)
  • John Haymes Newton (1988)
  • Gerard Christopher (1989-1991)
  • Dean Cain (1993-1997)
  • Tom Welling (2001-2011)
  • Brandon Routh (2006)
  • Henry Cavill (2013-2017)
^^^
So, yeah, sorry given just how many popular IPs of science fiction, fantasy, etc. maintain their popularity over many decades; to say - "OK, the original actors are retired/passed so using that IP is off the table because..." is a bit ridiculous.
