Klingons: Canon or Ford?

Another interpertation of the Klingons is found in Joe Haldeman's "World Without End", where he portrays them as kind of martial religious fanatics. It is an interesting take on them, and one I liked as well.

This portrayal intrigues me, though this may be because it reminds me of the Imperium of Man of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Check out the book, if you can find it. Its a short novel, and it was panned even by the author himself, but it remains one of my favorite Trek novels, due to the overall story and the character portrayals, especially the Klingons.

Fair? Perhaps not, but I can't help but feel that the filmed media could have made more of an effort. The best thing would have been for G.R. to pay a little attention to his licensed products, other than to class them as "too military," and integrate the excellent leg work already put in by Ford, Okrand and others into his ongoing Trek.

That's the most frustrating thing. The filmed media isn't beholden to the written, but it just seems foolish to ignore such a wealth of pre-worked out material.


In my head, the Ford Klingons are still there, they're the ones pushing forward the scientific and cultural advances behind the scenes that we don't see from the on-screen Klingons.

We've already seen Klingon scientists, lawyers and chefs in Modern Trek. Intelligent, believable ones.

Sure, they don't act just like humans in mongol makeup the way the TOS Klingons did, but you can't really level a criticism of them as "not being human enough".

Did he say this in an interview or something? If so he did a really bad job of capturing Ford's Klingons. Moore basically turned them into Viking berserkers.

i think he did a great job! That's how they would think if they were alien race that love fighting and are brave and courageous.

You're right. They're Klingons...not puppy dogs! [chuckle]

And, I think a lot of people don't understand this but a great fighter probably pray a lot, too. Not many people know it, but the spiritual part of Muay Thai is devoted to Buddhism...being a good person and always fighting for the right reason. But that's the way humans think...not Klingons! [laugh]

Yeah becuase its kind of hard to beat someone who is ahead of you in scientific development like the Ford klingons were ith the federation.

Actually I once thought that the Klingons in that novel acted very much like what we now know as...Cardassians.
