It's make believe. First guy even came up with the voice for the character. Cleveland Brown doesn't even exist as a character if he wasn't invented by the first guy. Once again we find toxic behavior coming from someone who is brilliant at their job and likely lots of that brilliance must come from that toxicity. In 1999 or earlier when they made season one, did they have the money to hire a black guy? Meanwhile in 1999 there would have been no problem with a completely white cast... But according to your logic a white writer can only write white characters or they "become a fantasy of what a black person is" but then a whole white cast is bad because they didn't write characters who are not white despite the fact if they do that then it's just like a minstrel show.?

This makes no sense. This is a whole other level of telling people to stay in their lane. You got a whole bunch of needless rules of what you can do and this person can do that but not this, when all you need is inclusion and diversity and representation.

Maybe the issue is someone like Phil Lamarr should be given a more prominent character on the show and you bring in new POC voice actors to the mix to play new characters. They are all cartoons. Anyone can play anyone and nobody can notice.

Hell I didn't know for years Bart Simpson was played by a lady. My first reaction wasn't "How does she do that. Crack the mind of a 8 year old boy or however old Bart Simpson is. It's because it's make believe. It's not real beyond the reality it is fiction."

The Simpsons has also recently recast some POC roles with POC actors. Doctor Hibbert and his wife for example are now voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson and Dawn Lewis.

What I did say is that when you have a white guy playing a black character who is only written by white guys, that's not "the real thing." That's a bunch of white guys' fantasy of a black guy.

Having representation on the writing staff and in the cast is a moral obligation. That doesn't mean that only black people can write a black character. But it does mean you can't only have white guys running the show.

The origins of the series in Back to the Future are documented well enough that Universal could press a claim, and it may be cheaper and easier for the R&M producers to just pay Universal than to fight out a parody defense. I've always wondered.

That is a different issue though. White washing has been a big problem. Taking historically real people and replacing them with white people. Granted I wouldn't say the people who made the movie were assholes or anything. It was a product of the time and I am glad they are trying to move away from that.
