Justin Roiland looking at 7 years in prison for domestic violence.

A white guy playing a black guy in a white supremacist country is by definition not "the real thing."

It's make believe. First guy even came up with the voice for the character. Cleveland Brown doesn't even exist as a character if he wasn't invented by the first guy. Or brought to life by a series of writers of different racial and gender backgrounds creating his dialogue, backstory and personality.

Roiland seems to be more proof that the line between evil and talent is very thin indeed. Once again we find toxic behavior coming from someone who is brilliant at their job and likely lots of that brilliance must come from that toxicity. If Hell is real you know Satan is going to have some kickass entertainment down in those fire pits. No wonder Robert Johnson asked the devil and not a angel for guitar skills.

It's make believe.

No shit. But it's also inherently a white guy taking a job away from a black guy, and a white guy playing a black character written by mostly white guys. This is problematic, especially in the context of the history of minstrel shows. So to call it "real" is bullshit. It was always a white guy's fantasy of a black person.

In 1999 or earlier when they made season one, did they have the money to hire a black guy? Meanwhile in 1999 there would have been no problem with a completely white cast... I was seconds ago looking at the King of the Hill cast for diversity and my jaw dropped. Who is this girl? Who is this Beautiful girl? Wow. Just simply wow...

Brittany Murphy RIP.

Yes.

No, there was a problem with a completely white cast. It's just that white people were in general in 1999 so ethnocentric that they didn't think there was a problem with a completely white cast.

But according to your logic a white writer can only write white characters or they "become a fantasy of what a black person is" but then a whole white cast is bad because they didn't write characters who are not white despite the fact if they do that then it's just like a minstrel show.?

This makes no sense. This is a whole other level of telling people to stay in their lane. You got a whole bunch of needless rules of what you can do and this person can do that but not this, when all you need is inclusion and diversity and representation.

Maybe the issue is someone like Phil Lamarr should be given a more prominent character on the show and you bring in new POC voice actors to the mix to play new characters. They are all cartoons. Anyone can play anyone and nobody can notice.

Hell I didn't know for years Bart Simpson was played by a lady. My first reaction wasn't "How does she do that. Crack the mind of a 8 year old boy or however old Bart Simpson is. It's because it's make believe. It's not real beyond the reality it is fiction."

This is a Trap.

Run!

Iirc in the Cleveland Spin off, all of Cleveland’s family were voiced by POC actors except obviously Cleveland, and Rallo (Mike Henry voiced him too). The white hillbilly across the street was also voiced by a black actor.

The Simpsons has also recently recast some POC roles with POC actors. Doctor Hibbert and his wife for example are now voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson and Dawn Lewis.

The Simpsons were strong armed into greeting the new world order with open arms.

Emma Stone starred in a romcom where she was a playing a Hawaiian, and then something changed, and then the entire world called her an asshole.

What do you want to call that shift in perception?

Sure it's always been wrong, but all the white people were asleep or some thing, and then they woke up. There has to be a better way of saying this?

Nope. Never said that.

What I did say is that when you have a white guy playing a black character who is only written by white guys, that's not "the real thing." That's a bunch of white guys' fantasy of a black guy.

Having representation on the writing staff and in the cast is a moral obligation. That doesn't mean that only black people can write a black character. But it does mean you can't only have white guys running the show.

or they "become a fantasy of what a black person is" but then a whole white cast is bad because they didn't write characters who are not white despite the fact if they do that then it's just like a minstrel show.?

It's almost like maybe they should have people who are not white both writing the show and acting in it!

This makes no sense.

"Hey, your show should not just be made by white people and should not only be about white people" makes perfect sense unless you think "white" is the default setting for the human species.

Just hire Fox and Lloyd.. ;)
That raises a question I've wondered about for years -- are Univeral, Robert Zemekis, and Bob Gale getting a cut of Rick and Morty money? The origins of the series in Back to the Future are documented well enough that Universal could press a claim, and it may be cheaper and easier for the R&M producers to just pay Universal than to fight out a parody defense. I've always wondered.

That is a different issue though. White washing has been a big problem. Taking historically real people and replacing them with white people. Granted I wouldn't say the people who made the movie were assholes or anything. It was a product of the time and I am glad they are trying to move away from that.

Because the final product was different enough.
