Just what is so bad about 'These Are The Voyages'..?

So, if everyone hates this episode, how did it end up a fans choice on the "Captain's Log" DVD collection?
Because it was the choice of general fans of Star Trek. Probably included a number of TNG fans.

If the vote had been just among the "hardcore" Ent fans, fans who followed the show start to finish, I doubt TaTV would have been included. By and large, hardcore ENT fans hate the episode.

I think what makes that more significant is that the public by and large just didn't care about the ending of this show or it's existence.

Alot of people I knew that aren't Trek fans didn't know there was another Star Trek show on the air...they though Voyager was still running...kids and adults alike. They knew what Star Trek looked like and ENT wasn't it.

Aside from them being clueless it still says alot about the show. As much Voyager was derided for it's mediocre episodes when people ran across it on UPN, they watched it...kids and adults alike.

But ENT they apparently just skipped over, not even caring what it was.

Do you remember the Voyager music montages they used to do? The Jamming music and Janeway saying something smart or Seven of Nine flaunting a new body suits. Boy they'd get me all hyped up for an episode...they didn't even do DS9 like. I think Voyager came off as more fun...and hip, younger.

The campaign to launch Voyager was huge because it headed the UPN Network.
I'm always surprised when people tell me they loved Voyager and they weren't Star Trek Fans. I thought Voyager was geeky but I've got these thuggy friends that tell me details of VOY and I'm shocked that these...dudes...watched Star Trek.

I'm sure they didn't watch religiously or anything.
It's interesting how advertising can make all the difference in the world.

Yeah, TATV was the final nail in the coffin for a series that actually doomed to fall six feet under from day one.

In order to enjoy TATV, you actually have to turn off all logic or ignore previous established Trek or canon (i.e. the TNG episode Pegasus). I mean, this shouldn't be that hard of thing to do already, seeing you have to do the same thing when you watch the rest of "Star Trek: Enterprise".

Not that I haven't enjoyed certain Enterprise episodes as mindless marsh-mellow fluff type entertainment when they first aired, mind you.

But the point I am getting at here is that is that Enterprise was generally mindless entertainment, anyways (with a few moral lessons thrown in along the way).

But that's just my humble opinion.

;)

Side Note:

Oh, but I do understand why Enterprise fans hate this episode, though. TATV is particularly horrid because the episode's plot is partially centered around an andorian trying to save his daughter with a bunch of villains that we never heard of or seen before. Then throw in one of the most unbelievable and stupidest death scenes ever seen on TV for a main character and some cringe worthy lines and you get a pretty horrible piece of garbage.

But the fact that the stupidity was just a bit more apparent (or in your face) within this particular episode makes it okay for fans to hate it, though.

:p

The hatred towards this episode is so intense, that I wonder sometimes if we're even talking about the same episode. As a longtime Star Trek fan, I see TATV more as a conclusion to the 1987-2005 era of televised ST, and I think it was intended that way. I actually think it's a pretty good episode..!

So where is the bitter hatred coming from? Perhaps obviously: it's not a good final episode. No, maybe it's not. Then again, ENT was cancelled before her time, and TATV reflects that. There was no build up towards a satisfying conclusion like there was on TNG or DS9. It's like 'Turnabout Intruder'; a regular episode that happened to be the final outing for the series.

It really isn't a bad episode, but people have their own biases against it. So again perception about what it should be colored what it actually was. Its not the best series finale by a long shot, but its not bad.

RAMA

Well, not sound contradictory or anything, but if you were to ignore the andorian plot part, Trip's death, taking the focus off the main characters, and certain lines, the actual moral side of the story wasn't all that bad (now that I think about it).

In other words, the heart of the episode was in the right place but the body just wasn't working (big time).

For years now, people have been writing essays on the subject, trying to count all those reasons why this episode is so bad, yet you come here calling people biased. Some nerve you got there, pal. :techman:

Yeah, some people are just so biased in favor of good storytelling, good characterization, good dialogue, plots that make sense, and series finales that focus on the main characters of the show rather than guest stars from a different show.

Agreed, and I don't have a problem with it either.
