Just Started Avatar The Last Airbender

I'm up "City of Walls and Secrets" now. I really liked S1 but I'm enjoying S2 even more. Toph is a fun addition to the group. It's nice having a trio of villains rather than one conflicted sullen teenager. Also I like going through the Earth Kingdom more than the S1 episodes. It's interesting to see where this season is going; they already did the "Fire Nation besieges the friendly capitol" episode, so what will the finale be? It's also a nice twist that Ba Sing Se is a goodthought police state, I didn't see that coming at all. I don't think they ever hinted at something sinister going on there before.

I just saw the most depressing episode of a children's show ever made; "Appa's Lost Days". It's 20 minutes of poor Appa being tortured and abused and hunted and wounded until he becomes a savage animal. Wow. That was really depressing! And then even when the S1 girl squad finds him, they sacrifice themselves to Azula so he can get away! Jeez! Also the episode before said "In Memory of Mako", but I assume his voice will continue for several episodes on right? At what point do they switch to the impersonator? I'm guessing now the season finale will be about Aang leading a rebellion against Bah Sing Se's rulers so in S3 they're democratic allies and the army to lead against the Fire Nation.

It's Mako pretty much to the end of the season, since voice recording is the first thing done in the process of creating an animated show (well, the first thing after the writing), usually something like 6-8 months before the animation is finished. However, I've heard that there's a bit of Greg Baldwin as Iroh in "Tales of Ba Sing Se." Perhaps Mako was ill at the time of the recording, or perhaps there was some redubbing needed.

Heh-heh-heh... You'll see...

OK I'm up 302 now. The ending of S2 had a definite Empire Strikes Back feeling. The rebel base is lost to the enemy. The hero goes off to train with a kooky guide but leaves before his training is complete to save his friends in peril, endangering ever becoming truly powerful. The hero is grievously wounded by the enemy and flees in defeat. I'm a little pissed that after an entire season of slowly coming to redemption Zuko falls right back to the dark side, though I'm sure he'll have an eleventh hour turn in the finale. As for the start of S3, I really really don't like Aang with hair. Ruins his entire look! Interesting that Mark Hamil is the voice of the Fire Lord. And after two seasons of build up to finally see his face... he was too boring looking. I was hoping for something a little more... evil looking. Also I find it odd that they're not bothering to try to turn Bah Sing Se back to the good side, since that's y'know, you're army of thousands of soldiers. What the hell are the few of them going to do to defeat the entire Fire Nation? You need an army. Even if they just assassinate the Fire Lord and Azula and Zhao (which Aang will refuse to do) someone else will just become the new leader.

^All I can say is, keep watching and beware of making assumptions about what lies ahead.

But yeah, the penultimate chapter of Book 2 was way too Luke-and-Yoda for my tastes. Also it made the meditative process to open the chakras seem way too quick and easy.

That part I didn't mind because a) Aang is the Avatar and a prodigy and they've always shown that incredibly difficult abilities come naturally to him, and b) it would have been tedious to have gone through lengthy diatribes about all nine chakras.

^I didn't want lengthy diatribes, I just wanted it to seem as if Aang needed time, work, and concentration to master each step rather than instantly getting it. Maybe more of a montage approach to suggest more time passing, even if the actual screen time remained the same.

Up to 3X3 Painted Lady. I'm still not getting their strategy here. Why did they just give up on Bah Sing Se? Why are they in the Fire Nation? They want to ambush the Fire Lord during the eight hour eclipse... but since they refuse to kill in battle what the hell does it matter if they "defeat" him? Are they hoping for a democratic uprising or something? I know their "friends"; will arrive to help but if you count out the Earth Kingdom, that leaves you with a couple water benders. And they haven't even mentioned the need to find someone to teach Aang fire bending yet. During the whole series I'd always assumed it would have been Zuko or Iroh but now who knows. Also please tell me Aaang will shave his head again before the end :P

Because they lost. The real power in the city, the Dai Li, was against them to begin with, and now it's allied with the Fire Nation. They're only four kids, even with superpowers. They can't singlehandedly defeat the military of the mightiest city in the world. Certainly not with a deadline looming. They just don't have time to focus on a battle they've already lost. They have to bring down the Fire Lord before Sozin's Comet returns.

All these issues will be addressed.

Oh yeah one thing really bugged me in "Painted Lady". The Fire Nation has motorboats?! It's one thing to have a big slow moving battleship, but a super fast instant acceleration motor boat?! When were those invented in the real world? Why didn't we see these in the S1 Finale?

Firebenders are able to generate combustion from their own bodies, so that gives them an edge in developing combustion-based technologies such as steam engines. When things were invented in the real world is beside the point, because the initial conditions are different. If there had been firebenders in the real world, they would've developed industrial technology a lot sooner.

Looking at the screencaps, the motorboats appear to be steam-driven, and it looks like they're coal-powered rather than firebender-powered. So it's a steampunk technology, in keeping with the rest of Fire Nation tech.

As for why we didn't see them before, maybe they're a new invention, only available in the Fire Nation itself as yet. Or since they're coal-powered, they probably don't have as much range or life expectancy as something firebender-powered; they may be too much of a resource drain for a fleet travelling to the far corners of the world, and only practical for short-range use in areas where coal is readily available. (I can't imagine a coal-fired motorboat being able to travel anywhere near as far on a single "tank" as a gasoline-powered one.)

That's because you've never tried onion and banana juice. Opens them chakras lickity split!

You seem to be going fine. Just I think the FN does use coal, they just can combust it easier.
