Joker Origin Story Announced

The shaggy hair and painted face are a little too reminiscent of the Ledger version, IMO.

My first thought upon seeing him in full-on Joker mode was that it was a Dark Knight prequel. Before he got the scars and when his ratty face paint was fresh.

I saw an April fools’ day story this year saying that he was meant to be the same Joker as Ledger. But, yes, the whole look so far is definitely reminiscent of that take.

I would be sp happy if they had a release like Logan, with a Black and White version (at least for home viewing, if not the limited theatrical release I believe B&W Logan received).

Well I've seen a lot of b&w stills from shots that were cut from Justice League so I wouldn't mind if that came out either...

I'd buy that title again if they did so. I'm a big fan of B&W films and cinematography. I chose my home cinema projector primarily because it has a special B&W setting that better replicates the warmer bulbs used when B&W was the dominant film format (and I have hundreds of B&W movies on DVD and Blu-ray).

When they are making these black and white versions are they doing more than just "turning the color knob down"? Like do they enhance the contrast or shadows or anything to work better in black and white?

It's not just "turning the color knob down" but it also isn't a simultaneous shoot with B&W in mind (at least for Logan). The effect of Logan in B&W is not as consistently good through the film (some dark scenes do suffer) but there are stretches that look fantastic (most likely because they took care to light the scenes as well as possible) and the story also lends itself to a B&W version. Also, my projector is particularly good with B&W anyway, so that helps (well, helps me).

Color actually plays a big role with the Joker, mostly due to his clown motif. One way to make a b&w version interesting (and not just turning the color knob down) would be to leave certain colors in (Schindler's List-style) which would pop up in the otherwise b&w film. Like, keep the Joker's colors in.

It would obviously need to be only a visual element to underscore the artistic depth of the movie. Without that, it would be just pretentious.

Looking forward to finally getting to see some footage from this. Of all the movies coming out in the next year or so this is the one I'm most unsure about.

I look at this and may completely pass on this movie altogether. DC's biggest problem is that it has been too dark, so now they are doing a whole movie on this dark character. The Joker is a Batman villain. To have him without Batman is just a ridiculous idea. This just looks like a movie about a psycho. When I go to a comic book movie, I want to see a movie about heroes stopping psychos.

Well, based on the trailer that movie looks as grimdark and pretentious as I expected. If it wasn't called Joker, it would work as a completely original evil clown drama. It feels like they just took a pre-existing script and slapped a few Batman universe names on it. I'll probably glance at it when it comes out on DVD and the public library buys it, but thats as far as I care to go to watch it, and even then I'll only be watching it out of morbid curiosity.

The vibe I get is that he's got aspergers. And that everyone he loves is gonna die or betray him. It's gonna be dark as fuck.

I'm looking forward to it.

The whole "DC so grimdark" whinging is getting rather stale, especially considering Shazam! is coming out literally tomorrow... :p
What, have you already forgotten how pretentious and depressing Aquaman was?

Jokes aside, I think the DC movies are firmly on the right track, using the right tone for each individual property. And if some don't want to see "Joker" because it's "grimdark", oh well, it was only $ 55 million to make, so it won't have to do the box office numbers of Aquaman to turn a profit.
