Joker Origin Story Announced

This certainly looks different, though I think we all knew that was a given. Phoenix’s performance looks like it will also be strong (also a fairly safe prediction).

I can just as easily see this being critically acclaimed like Logan as I can see it being mauled like Ang Lee’s Hulk. I have absolutely no idea which way it will go but I think it’s unlikely to be a film people have no strong views on.

My question is, do I give half a shit about the Joker in a world without Batman?

It looks interesting, at least.

It really doesn't scream Joker to me. More like a twisted sad sack clown. It's just a teaser so maybe the full trailer will be more joker-ish. It looks good though. Looks like a hell of a performance by Phoenix

The whole "DC so grimdark" whinging is getting rather stale, especially considering Shazam! is coming out literally tomorrow... :p

The exception. I'm very interested in seeing how it does in comparison. The critics seem to like it a lot so far. It has a 93% rating. DC movies shouldn't turn into camp or comedies, but there is a lighter tone that needs to be set. Superman should not be some angry, brooding guy. They couldn't have got the character more wrong. The tone I think should exist is the one on the Justice League cartoon of the 90s/00s.

What are you talking about? Aquaman was a simple light action movie, Shazam is coming out, Ezra Miller basically got fired because he didn't want to take his character into a lighter direction, you missed the whole Justice League movie? DC realized that they should be going into a lighter direction way back with the Suicide Squad reshoots.

Looks like it will be the best DC movie to ever happen, I feel bad for all the other DC movies now

I think it suggests a pretty awful film, myself. Not prejudging though. a trailer is just a trailer.

While I'm all for new interpretations, I can't say that the idea of a sympathetic Joker really interests me, assuming that's how it plays out.

OK, on one hand, that looks like it has absolutely nothing to do with the comics, but on the other hand it does look like it could be good. If nothing else, it looks like it's got one hell of a performance from Joaquin Phoenix.

Maybe it's because of me growing up and getting into comics in the 90s, but the idea of an alternative story for the DC characters isn't really that much of a deal for me. It's an Elseworlds story. It's a self-contained story, taking the DC characters and putting them in new contexts. And a lot of Elseworlds were fantastic.

Honestly the trailer appeared to be a far better take of gritty subject matter than Snyder ever managed. My problem with his films were never that they were dark, it was that they were the kind of shallow and childish interpretation that 90s comics often did. Heck, Phoenix in the clown garb laughing to himself is far more chilling than pretty much anything the DC Cinematic Universe has managed so far.

This looks interesting.

It'll be nice to have an interesting comic book movie this year.

This might be the first DC movie I skip. It just doesn't interest me as a premise. I don't really care how someone becomes the Joker.

Looks like it could be quite well made, but I personally don't care for Joker origins. His background just doesn't interest me, and the more I learn about him the less I care. If I may be hyperbolic for just a moment, "Some people were mean to him and he had a shitty life so he became the Joker" is so mundane I could puke. ;)

Man of Steel was dark. BvS was dark. Suicide Squad was dark. They all failed. Wonder Woman, a little lighter tone--succeeded. Even Aquaman wasn't quite as light as it could have been. I saw the Justice League movie--it was the beginning of them starting to realize the failures of the Snyder era, but it's still not right.

And this movie looks awful based on that trailer. I have absolutely no interest in it at all, and I doubt I will bother seeing it in the theaters.
