Joker Origin Story Announced

Man of Steel was dark. BvS was dark. Suicide Squad was dark. They all failed. Wonder Woman, a little lighter tone--succeeded. Even Aquaman wasn't quite as light as it could have been. I saw the Justice League movie--it was the beginning of them starting to realize the failures of the Snyder era, but it's still not right.

And this movie looks awful based on that trailer. I have absolutely no interest in it at all, and I doubt I will bother seeing it in the theaters.
Suicide squad exceeded expectations at the box office. It was originally filmed to be a straight dark movie, but reshoots added a slightly lighter tone, showing that wb realized the grimdark era wasn't working way back then.

I think it suggests a pretty awful film, myself. Not prejudging though. a trailer is just a trailer.

While I'm all for new interpretations, I can't say that the idea of a sympathetic Joker really interests me, assuming that's how it plays out.

It will definitely not be a standard Marvel/DC style spectacle film with tons of CGI, cool powers and combat moves etc.

I see maybe the definite movie origin story for one of the most fascinating comicbook villains ever, a guy who starts out a little odd, a loser who gets mistreated time and time again until he finally snaps.

I don't even expect to see Batman or any kind of costumed superhero, this will be a drama character piece apparently helmed by one of the best current actors and i very much look forward to it now after i've seen the trailer.

I just hope when the movie comes out that it turns out there is some direct connection to the comics that really makes him The Joker rather than just a guy who goes crazy and starts wearing clown makeup (that doesn't even look like the makeup worn by any version of the Joker I've seen).

That's not why I found the trailer boring. It's more that the idea of someone with playful innocence who's been ground down by the world snapping, going psychotic, and becoming a supervillain exhibiting a twisted version of the innocence is a cliché. As soon as I saw him getting picked on for wearing clown make up, every single emotional beat in the trailer followed like clockwork. It was excruciatingly boring for me.

But, hey, if it works for you, I'm happy for you.

Maybe it will work for me. This is just a trailer, after all.

The whole "DC so grimdark" whinging is getting rather stale, especially considering Shazam! is coming out literally tomorrow... :p

Who gives a crap? Joker is grimdark and pretentious. I'm not saying that DC overall is going back to grimdark, it isn't, but this movie is pure Snyder era DC, just with a more pretentious attitude and even more hatred/embarrassment towards the source material.

Also, if you don't like people complaining about being grimdark, too bad. Even if DC movies continue to get better (although with Shazam and almost certainly Joker being putrid shit, its really just some movies getting better), no one should ever forget what Snyder's bullshit did to the DCEU.

Movie looks good. From what I understand the Wayne Family is going to be in this movie so my theory is the Joker will kill them thus creating the Batman of this world. Granted that was also done in Batman89 but it will feel more different this time since the movie want have a Batman character in it.

So, you've seen Shazam! and didn't care for it? Without spoilers (please) what was it you didn't like? What was wrong with it?

He's been writing about why he hates that movie since long before anything was known about it. Why'd you go and feed him with a question like this now...

Just to be clear Joker is not part of the Worlds of DC/DCEU/DC-Whatever-You-Want-To-Call-It-Now, it's a standalone (unless of course we get sequels), movie with no connection to any of the other DC movies.

This is nothing like Snyder era DC. Not even close.

Which source material? The joker has had numerous origin stories throughout his 70 plus year history.

You're welcome to complain, but you look silly doing it on a movie based on a villain with a history of darkness

Early signs point to Shazam being a huge hit....
We should never forget what Snyder's bullshit did to the DCEU.

They're just movies. Get over it.

People, don't let @kirk55555 be the loudest voice here.
By which I mean, yes, he's gonna hate these movies, and he's gonna complain about this movies, but by taking each and every of his silly posts and taking them apart word by word, you're actually amplifying his voice.

Instead of replying to his little rants, let's annoy him by talking about what an awesome, groundbreaking, genre-redefining and award-worthy masterpiece of cinema this movie will be.

After seeing the trailer, I'm thrilled, can't wait to see the movie. Finally, more experimentation in what a comic book movie can be. Especially with a major IP. Good on WB for willing to take a risk. (And smartly not spending 100s of millions of dollars on that risk.)

Oh yes, I just hate all modern DC movies. Except Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Suicide Squad (which I maintain is an entertaining popcorn movie, even if its a shit adaptation of the comics), and Justice League. But, hating Batman v Superman and disliking Man of Steel (I've softened my opinion toward MoS, but its still not a good movie), and almost certainly hating Shazam means I hate all DC movies  If you want to be technical, I hate 3/7ths of the current DCEU, or about 43%. If you count how genuinely excited I am for The Suicide Squad, and cautiously optimistic I am toward Wonder Woman 1984 (minus the godawful casting for Cheetah), that's even more positivity toward DC movies. But, yeah, obviously I hate everything, and definitely not just the grimdark and/or pretentious shit. Plus, Joker isn't even DCEU, so

I don't get annoyed by people heaping praise on pretentious shit. If I did, the Christopher Nolan Batman movies would have killed me just by existing. Well ok, to be fair the Nolan Batman movies aren't that bad, but the people who act like they're the greatest superhero movies ever would have driven me insane if stuff like that bothered me. Like what you want, but this isn't your personal forum, so you'll have to experience other opinions then your own, just like I do. The difference is that I don't mind differing opinions, unlike some people.

That's the only good thing about it. The real DC movies are going away from the grimdark bs, even if some of them (like Shazam and the Harley Quinn movie) are still/are going to be pretty shit. Its still discouraging to know that there are still some braindead executives letting idiots do grimdark bullshit with DC characters.

At least Snyder could claim he did Watchman decently (I may dislike Snyder, but he made the Watchman story tolerable for me when I absolutely hate the comic its based on). The Joker director is mostly known for making the same shitty comedy movie three times, and now he's doing a crappy arthouse film with a main actor whose only tolerable role (in my opinion) was playing second fiddle to Mel Gibson in Signs.

To be fair, when you say you "like" something, it's generally buried in a wall of text talking about how much Geoff Johns has ruined something that you loved.

Getting back to the trailer, I must say, it is another example of WB's great use of music in their marketing. Jimmy Durante's rendition of Chaplin's "Smile", in this case.

inspired by Giacomo Puccini's opera "Tosca".

The title and lyrics were added in the 1950s and obviously inspired by the scene from "Modern Times" linked above, where Chaplin's Tramp cheers up his despairing girlfriend by telling her that they'll make it if they just toughen up, and telling her (by gesturing) to smile. The song was first released by Nat King Cole:

The song already got a melancholy note through the renditions of Durante, but also Judy Garland and others.

The trailer, though, gives the song a sinister note that wasn't there before, and the song itself amplifies the feeling of inner despair of Phoenix's character.
