As this last go has proven, it's not the gender of the Doctor that's mattered, it's shitty writing and the rehashed monster of the week that's killed ratings - which was a guy's fault.
As for Top Gear, that was an absolutely horrible male host than the 1/6th of the cast being a woman.
And we all know how poorly Battlestar Galactica did when they recast Starbuck as a woman.
Well done sci-fi warrior. Keep up the good fight of making sure pretend aliens are the same gender as they've always been! Excelsior!

Enjoyed that movie, and that is some classic pedigree it has passed on to us!
Just a warning the lead in Discovery is female.

I'm a girl & I'm totally with you. Tom Baker was the Doctor I watched most when I was a kid, and I adored Sarah Jane Smith and both Romanas. Part of the beauty of a show like Dr Who is you can have a strong, intelligent, independent woman as the companion...and she gets to be totally brilliant, call out the Doctor when he's wrong & even save the day. I really miss those days.
I can't stand Jodi Whittaker as an actress, mainly because I'm sick of her in Broadchurch. Yes, she was great in season 1, and I get why she was so mean to Ellie in season 2. It didn't seem like she has all that much range in season 3. Its always 'emotive grieving mother'. She doesn't have the range Olivia Coleman has. If they really had to go this route with someone from Broadchurch, Olivia would've been a much, much better pick. Though my personal favorite for the role still is John Boyega, and I hope he gets the chance some point in the future.
In some ways Jodi Whittaker is like Matt Smith in terms of acting ability. I couldn't stand Matt as the Doctor, since he always seemed so forced. He's better in The Crown, but not great. I stuck with his Doctor, hoping it'd get better but it didn't. I'm really not down with another year or more of painful acting, so I'll probably skip Dr Who until the role is recast. Good news is there's 50 years of past episodes to rewatch.

I expect male fans to cosplay as a genderbent 13th Doctor just as much as women have been doing with all the other Doctors. And it will be great.
Hell, I remember the reaction when pictures of Eccleston first popped up for the revival. "Why are they trying to make Doctor Who modern?" Do they have to make the show grim and gritty?"
And, my favorite complaint, "They're ripping off the Matrix."

OK, so they went for it and cast a woman. I'm not sure how I feel about that either way. I'm gonna watch no matter what, and we'll see how she plays the part.
I never saw any of the previous actors in anything, outside of Peter as Malcolm Tucker via youtube when he was announced, so not knowing Jodie isn't any different for me.
