JD's Comic Book Thread

I finished "Divinity" last night and thought overall the book was good. I am looking forward to "Divinity Vs Imperium" and "Divinity II" later on in the year. Very much enjoying what Valiant is doing right now.

So am I. I'm finding more and more these days that I am being drawn to stuff from companies other than Marvel and DC. Especially non-superhero stuff.

Has anybody read Resident Alien? I just discovered it a few weeks ago and just love it.

Divinity at VALIANT was a very interesting and well done introduction of a brand new character. Curious how he's incorporated into the upcoming Imperium issue and how that will likely lead to his second mini this Fall.

I'm also really enjoying Ninjak, Ivar and the recently relaunched Bloodshot Reborn.

Speaking of non-Marvel/DC is anyone else reading the second Lady Mechanika series? The Tablet of Destinies? So far it's two issues have come out on time and Benitez says it's going to. I'm enjoying it so far as the series is as much Steampunk as it is Indiana Jones.

Also TMNT #46 (IDW) where the fate of Donatello is laid out a bit more was a good read. Really looking forward to what Kari does as the defacto leader of the Foot, unless until Shredder reveals himself. Curious as to what he and Baxter are up to, the TCRI building as one of Baxter's shell corps was cool.

Captain Midnight #23 (Dark Horse, Project Black Sky) - the second to last issue, that is wrapping up the Archon story guest starring X, The Mark and Skyman was a high octane ride! Oh, and poor Helios---I was really starting to like him, even if not fully trusting him.

Black Hood #4 (Archie,Dark Circle) - Greg got in a bit over his head as Black Hood and now has had to bring in his speech therapist to hopefully save his ass. He got sliced up real good by someone who knows more about street fighting than him + some thugs now know who he is and one just got taken into police custody. First arc wraps up next month.

Fight Club II.

I liked looking at the movie thinking that Marla was another personality too.

Seems real instead.

So far I'm trying to catch up on "Saga"--I've read the first two volumes and can't get enough! Beyond that I'm also getting into the "Truth" storyline in Action Comics.

Saga is next on my list of things to read when I can somehow find more hours in a day.

Did he even finish the first one?

^^^^
He did finish it, took about a year though to do them. Six issues numbered #0-5.
Issues #0-3 came out over the last half of '14, then when he had #4&5 ready for Spring '15 release he first issued a summary collection of the first 4 issues in Feb & March with #0-1 in one collection and #2-3 in the other with issue #4 coming the last week of March on the heels of the last compilation. Issue #5 hit April then Tablet of Destines #1 in May.
He says Tablet of Destinies is already finished and will ship on time.

These delays annoy me and if he hadn't said ToD was already finished I was going to trade wait.
This is why something like the RED ONE book from Dodson doesn't jive with me and I was just getting into that...but 2 issues and a year planned break, no thank you. Trade it is for Red One.

^ There is a one year break for Red One? I know Dodson can handle a monthly. That is just messed up.

Going to have to pick up the rest of the first vol of Lady Mechanika then.

Yes, Dodson explained it in an editorial at the end of issue #2, that it's apparently the norm for some/many European books. To do two larger, 40page issues then break.

This reviewer for issue #2 summarizes it here:
Lastly, the continuation of this book and the new order is baffling. These two issues comprise Book 1, which is all that will be released in 2015. Book 2 will be released in 2016 with another two or three issues, which will be the sum total of that story arc. We’ve barely spent any time with the characters (who’s a character aside from Red One and debatably Lew?). It seems like it will be really difficult to sustain interest in the series, but maybe other people have adored the book. Regardless, this makes for a weird and off-putting cliffhanger.

I've got a couple of quick Marvel questions:
1) I'm almost to the AvX tie-ins on Wolverine & The X-Men, can I read just those issues without any of the other AvX stuff, or should I wait until I reach AvX in the other Marvel series I'm reading and just all of it at once. I'm pretty far behind on the other series, I'm just starting the first New Avengers series, so it will probably be a long time before I read AvX on other series.
2) I'm up to Kraven's First Hunt on Amazing Spider-Man, and I was wondering if it ties inot Kraven's Last Hunt? They have a KLH collection on Comixology, should I read that before First Hunt?

I just stuck with "Wolverine and the X-Men" while reading "Avengers Vs X-Men". I highly recommend Gillen's "Consequences" which serves as the epilogue and is a conversation between Scott and Logan and there's stuff with Sinister in there which was never really resolved or just ignored by Bendis when he started his run.

"Kraven's First Hunt" I believe was unconnected to Grim Hunt and Kraven's Last Hunt, it was a remake of previous issues that introduced Kraven's daughter Ana and meant to mirror "Last Hunt". It ties into "Grim Hunt" really only because it introduces Ana but you can pretty much skip it.

I enjoyed "Red One" so much that I don't mind the break as I mentioned previously. It's annoying but acceptable for me.

Yes, yes and yes again. Kraven's Last Hunt is one of, if not THE best Spider-Man story ever told.

I'll keep that in mind for when I read the main miniseries.

I plan on reading First Hunt no matter what since I'm going through ASM in order from Brand New Day forward. I was just wondering if I should throw Last Hunt in there first.

Thanks. If Last Hunt is that highly regarded then it sounds I'll definitely want to read i.

I read Broken World #1 from Boom! Comics this morning over coffee and thought it was quite good. It involves most of the population of Earth fleeing due to a pending asteroid strike and deals with the people left behind. It's a 4 issue mini and I will definitely be picking up the whole thing.

I also read Dead Drop #2 from Valiant. This was my first exposure to the character of Archer and I found him pretty amusing.

Edited to add: I meant to post this last week when Invincible #120 came out. Robert Kirkman must be a Star Trek fan. He's been featuring these guys for a while now but I don't remember him ever being this obvious with it.

I forgot to mention the yesterday that Comixology posted a bunch of this year's FCBD issues, so I picked up a bunch just for the hell of it. I got the Avengers/Uncanny Inhumans, Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket Raccoon, TMNT, Savage Dragon and Tales of Honor issues.

As you may have already guessed, I highly recommend the Savage Dragon FCBD offering. :D
