Jayru (JSnaith's) 3D Trek

Saucer Rim now done, on the bottom part...

More later.

PS: Yes it's textured, but the lighting isn't so good in this render ;-)

The neck is done... (so much for tomorrow, meh, I'll start the nacelles tomorrow)...

Your eyes are not wrong, there are no airlocks on the torpedo deck. I always thought that was a weird choice, please board our ship at the most explosive level :-/ But I will listen to arguments that suggest they should be an airlock there. I have left space accordingly.

Anyways, off to read, then hit the hay. See you all tomorrow, comments and the like welcome!

Great progress so far, very keen on how the nacelles will turn out.

I'm not a big fan of airlocks in the neck, it seems to thin for it. So I'd say you're on the right track.

Food for thought, the airlocks on the torpedo deck might be for easier loading of torpedo casings.

I have beefed up the neck, making it wider than usual to accommodate the fact I think it's too thin normally. Having the intermix shaft run through it has always felt like a bad design to me... But without a completely new design for neck, akin to the Excelsior, I can't see a way to improve upon that, except to make it wider like I have.

Torpedo: Where are they stored? On-screen evidence from TWOK shows they are stored in the neck above the launchers. Given the size of the physical torp casing (again as seen in TWOK) and the width/height of the airlock hatch I don't think that's how the torpedoes were loaded onto the ship. Ok, in TWOK we see a manual launcher, although it was able to auto-load in TSS - or Scotty had taken the time to preload some torpedoes. By TUC we see a full auto-loading system for torpedoes. So maybe yes, they were loaded through the airlocks in TWOK.

So, using on-screen (canon) evidence to place where they are stored is... Uncomfortable. Whilst the shooting model of the refit Enterprise is stunning, it suffers from some ill-thought-out problems.

So, this brings me nicely to two points:
  • Are the torpedoes physical in the universe I am creating?
  • And where are they stored if they are a physical thing?
I think, yes, they are a physical thing, but they are stored in the secondary hull and rise up to the launchers. If that's the case, I need to consider how the physical shells are loaded onto the ship - but if they come up from the secondary hull, I need a hatch to load them from there as it's not logical (or good design) to load them onto the ship from a location to close to the launcher, and not the storage bay.

Yes, yes, I understand in the real world how ordinance is loaded onto warships. But I would like to think that by the 23rd Century with the experience humanity has gained, plus the off-world engineering thoughts/advice from other Federation members, we would have a better system.

Sorry this turned into such a missive. But it is food for thought.

More later!

PS: The nacelles are going to be interesting, but in a good way :-)

More detail in... doesn't look like much has been done, but some of the things I've done have turned out to be fiddly (the "in-cuts" for the self-lighting and markings for one) -

Hull maps are a modification of the ones I did for the Phase II USS Sansar - I may lighten them up a bit, although the blue-grey is growing on me.

Sticking with the glowing deflector at the mo, but as I say that is subject to change. Lots more to build in, and then... Maybe a break for a bit? Or a shuttle for her. Hummmm. I'll think on that. Comments and the like welcome, more later on.

Yeah, I can see how your not dead set on the deflector just yet. Somehow, I feel that this leans more towards a TOS/SNW antenna like construct. Or a combo? Have something that glows behind an more TOS like dish? I don't know, I'm not a designer or anything.

Something like this? -

More detail built and refinements made -

I think this is it for today, my brain needs a rest. So, comments and thoughts welcome, more tomorrow :-)
