Jayru (JSnaith's) 3D Trek

So... Taking from TOS, TMP and SNW (nothing from JJ, as I'm not a fan of his worlds), started blocking out a new ship -

Deck height is 3m at the mo, may scale her up a little to allow for 3.5m. Current length is 436m (currently) and subject to change. 26 decks projected.

Comments welcome, more later.

I like your take on the aft of the nacelles.

For a moment, I thought the top of the saucer were stair-stepped--an additional layer.

You often don't see that.

One bit of CGI art someone attempted a decade or two back was of the AMT box art drawings being rounded out in 3D.

FJ had a nice secondary hull teardrop --but a simpler saucer.

I have seen lovely saucers stop simpler AMT type cigars.

I like the near Ariel saucer width on this latest project.

Intermix shaft location and layout, wanted to push it back in the neck as I always felt it was too far forward -

Also, have not rescaled the ship, still rocking 3m deck heights, rather than the 2.5 I would normally use on a TOS/TMP era ship. 3m is more in line with TNG. So, had a look and this is what I have -

Bit bigger than I thought. I could rescale her down to the 2.5m deck height size, but... I'm not a size queen, I can live with a 435-meter length to her. (The USS Sansar is 295m long, by the way).

Anyway, going to start detailing the saucer... so more later? Maybe... Watch this space.

Started work on the impulse deck... not liking the crystal, so going to change it, but the rest I shall keep, or maybe refine a bit more -

This is the last update of the day, as I have been kicked out of the office, because having two PCs on in this heat is killing my other half, (who works from home). Kind of like them alive, so I guess I'll switch off...

More tomorrow

A small development suggestion, but don't constrain yourself to consistent deck heights. If you've ever taken a tour of a real-world ship like a battleship or carrier (or even a cruise ship!), you'd know that the decks are mostly planned around the internal systems, and are rarely consistent. So if if looks better to move something up or down but would give you some odd deck heights, do it anyway!

Whatever you decide to do, you've done some amazing work here!

I have actually, toured real-world ships. Deck heights are all over the place... It may well be my autism that directs me to stick to one size, even though in the real world that's not how it's done. Of course, Star Trek takes its direction from real-world engineering - although that changed in later spin-offs and we saw a consistent deck height on the various MSDs. Actually, that sparks a memory from TWOK - towards the end just before the final battle when the Enterprise goes to red alert - you see a sided schematic showing each deck going to red with deck heights being consistent. BUT, that was an indicator, not likely a real look at each deck's height. Just something the tactical officer could look at and see all decks' alert status.

Hummm. I'll give it some thought.

Actually there is some variation in deck heights in the TWOK status display. It is consistent in the primary hull core but varies above on the A-B decks and below starting at the torpedo launchers.

There are also these versions from Probert’s original concepts, which has even more wicked coolness:

I think I prefer the triple-emitter myself.
They are cool!

But...

Playing with the proportions of the ship as well, slimmed her down to 392m - still keeping the basic deck height at 3m. Doesn't look so squashed now -

Anyways, I have a problem with my main rig. I think a fan has failed. Need to get that sorted before I do anything else.

More (hopefully) later.

Update on the Big Rig.

I have a Corsair One i500, treated myself when the news came in about my life expectancy (can't take money with you, and everything important has already been covered). Wonderful machine, very pleased with it.

One of the fans for the GPU water cooler has failed, the other is able to take the load and keep the machine at the right temp, but it looks like a bad install on that fan as one of the wires is now bare and it sparked. Looks like a bad install that escaped QC. I will be checking future machines just in case!

I have a replacement on the way, as I am still within the warranty period, but until it arrives and I get set up I'm reduced to my laptop, which I can't do 3D stuff on. Yes, I could have upgraded the laptop so I could do 3D stuff on it, but... No, I write on my laptop, that's my primary hobby/income, and it needs to be distraction-free.

So, all projects are on hold until I get back up and running. Be a few days, and that's ok. Everything is backed up and safe, so nothing has been lost.

So more later in the week, keep well and safe, and enjoy the weather (if it happens to be nice where you are).

I can see what you mean by the squashed look. It wasn't too bad, but the newer version does have a more... that classic look but in its own way. Can't put my finger on it.

Anyway, as far as your rig is concerned... It sucks ofcourse, but thankfully it won't cost you and now you have a little bit more time for writing or other stuff the next few days

I think it feels more proportionately like a classic Constitution. The longer, "squashed" look was all about giving it a new style. My plan, as such, is to merge different things that I like from the various iterations that exist and create, as per the brief you suggested, "(my) own Constitution." There will be nods to various things, but I'm not fitting this into canon - but rather my own take on what Trek could have been. Wait until you see the Uniform design/idea I have... (Thank you Star Trek Online for allowing me to merge different things together uniform-wise).

Losing the big rig is a pain. It's going to take days to get everything on the new machine, sigh. Pretty much spent my day just chilling, which is something I don't do that often. Kind of nice. Boring. But nice.
