It's Been A Long Road...

I love the song theme . talks about humanity's hopes for the new generations to come, for the new path they took with the FTL ships , it's not about the song in general it's about the hidden meaning for this first crew who sails for the unknown . They don't know what is out there , if it is friend or enemy, if they all will come back or if they will loose people on the way. They know the risks but they have faith of the heart and that means the Earth's hope for the future.

Wrong in what way?

I just feel it doesn't convey they same sense of progress that the backdrop to the credits is showing. Contemporary soft rock music just does not seem to do it justice in my opinion. Then when they added the faster beat in the later seasons, it fit even less.

For me music needs to carry the visuals on its shoulders, it needs to carry the emotion of what i'm seeing. A rock song doesn't really do that for me when combined with images of ships and exploration.

It totally should have been Elton singing Rocket Man then.

I can do better.

"He wants to make love to the mountain".

I can't believe people are still bothered about this. It was an O.K. song - I'd probably have preferred an orchestral theme, but I liked it well enough.

I'm more bothered by seasons one to three which were pretty bad.

Now if you want a show with a bad theme, try NCIS...

I guess the title song is wearing me down, because I'm not skipping past it as much anymore. But I still don't like it.

I'm pretty much in the same camp. I still don't like it, although I don't get all hot and bothered by it like I did when it was first on. Sometimes I skip over it, sometimes I let the disc play through, though when I let it play through I usually get up and head to the fridge for a beer or something else.

The song seems too be about progress and moving forward against all odds. The visuals also reflect that, mankind's progress that leads them into space.

My problem with the theme song is that it often doesnt fit the mood of the teaser. It often snaps you right out of it.

The classical themes of the other shows dont break the mood and suggest, something "epic" is about to happen. The ENT theme lacks that.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

I would have liked to have seen a change, maybe with each season, to reflect the overall mood.

I hate it. It's the kind of cheesy self-satisfied American rock anthem I normally do my best to avoid. I can see what they were going for (a sort of aspirational folksiness), but it didn't work. If they wanted something better in the same vein, maybe they should have commissioned REM or some such to write an original theme.

Despite my dislike for "Faith of the heart", I do like the theme for Planetes, which is baffling to me as they're actually quite similar.

That nails it- it is an OK song, it just does not say "hang on- this is about to be an epic adventure"

TNG's peppy theme doen't exactly fit with some of the dire and dangerous straights teaser either. It's very up beat and march worthy rather than serious and epic.

Yes, but the TNG opener starts out with the Alexander Courage cue that's sort of ethereal and mysterious. That bit leads nicely into Goldsmith's heroic theme. But the Courage portion gives us enough of a light breath between the teaser and the main theme so as not to completely take you out of the story.

With Enterprise, it starts off like this: The Enterprise is in trouble! The crew is in severe danger! This alien is scary! Then... dink dink-a dink dink-a dink It's been a long road...

That's the difference.

Nah, the TNG peppy march sucks away anything the TOS theme might have. Might as well be at a parade.
