It's Been A Long Road...

Considering the demise of opening and closing credits, if it's ever rebroascast I'm sure they'll be deleted.

Some arguments about being too peppy or not fitting the episode doesn't really hold up. There's no way every episode can have its own theme or each episode match the theme music of its series. I can overlook this. What's more annoying is when sitcoms would do this. A lot of 70s sitcoms did this. Does Edith's attempted rape fit the All in the Family theme? Does Laverne & Shirley's episode about a mentally retarded girl earn a "Schlemeel, schlemazl"? Or the goofiness of Spock's Brain and Alexander Courage?

Maybe not the best choice for everyone, but I do think the theme, the opening, fits what they were trying to present the series as, a prequel, getting from there to here.

The use of a Theme Song rather than a tune was the least of ENT problems, I had no issue with the song though I wished they hadn't changed it for S3-4 for me the new orchastration didn't work.

But leaving aside the song for a moment, what about the visuals they virtually ignored everything that wasn't American.

With Enterprise, it starts off like this: The Enterprise is in trouble! The crew is in severe danger! This alien is scary! Then... dink dink-a dink dink-a dink It's been a long road...

That's the difference.

EXACTLY what I mean!

^ A song about someone following you around after they've died wouldn't exactly fit the themes of Enterprise as well, though. :)

AFAIK Braga stated they used U2's "Beautiful Day" as filler for the titles sequence:

I quite like "Faith of the Heart", and I like Russell Watson's version better than Rod's Stewart's. BUT, it wasn't right for the start of the show. I would have liked it for Seasons 5 - 7, maybe 4th. Earlier on, before the Xindi threat was resolved, with the resentment toward the Vulcans, and with the Andorian situation up in the air, I'd have preferred this:

Her last name doesn't hurt, either. ;)

I can do better.

"He wants to make love to the mountain".
Not right for Enterprise, but this could have vastly improved Star Trek V, had it been included. ;)

I didn't mind the song before Ent aired, and it grew on me as we watched the series. I quite love it now.

Rethinking my previous post, I think "hate" is probably too strong a word. I dislike the song and find it inappropriately cheesy.

It was a welcome change from the orchestral music of the prior shows.
Perhaps for some people, but I've always preferred instrumentals to vocals for main title themes. Vocal theme songs make me think comedy, not drama.
True, though occasionally you get a drama theme with vocals like Danger Man, Maverick or Rawhide.
Thinking about the difference between instrumental music and sung music.... Orchestral music is like an emotional environment you're invited into, whereas a singer is asserting their viewpoint and experience upon the listener. (Although, to complicate things, we could say that improvisational instrumental music and choral music have the contrary qualities.) This would fit with what Berman/Braga say in the Broken Bow commentary about wanting the show to be more character-driven than previous series. However, the song doesn't work for me, if only because it just sounds too cheesy. Maybe I'd like it more with some poignant strings at the start, and less of a "stadium" attitude.

On a related note... As far as background music goes, I've never much liked shows using vocal songs to support the drama, as for me it tends to have the opposite effect, being an unwanted complication or distraction.

The extreme example of this is the Sarah Connor Chronicles, a show I actually liked, except that at the climactic moments of the seasons they would intercut between three different dramatic scenes PLUS have a vocal song playing over the top PLUS a voiceover that didn't relate to any of the scenes! This excess of elements had the effect of diffusing whatever dramatic power was in the individual parts. Film school students, take note.

Doesn't it depend on the song/thme being used. For example in DW when the 10th Doctor regnerated at the end of "The End of Time" they used vocals in the music.
