I officially began my journey through all Star Trek on October 9th...

There were some nice visuals of golden starlight reflecting off of the Enterprise-D in GEN.

The nexus was a bunch of gobbledygook, just like the whole movie.

Generations suffered from studio execs having a laundry list of things they wanted included in the movie. Moore and Braga tried to deliver these things in less obvious ways, and readily admit in the DVD commentary that they fell short.

The uniforms were a patchwork job because they designed new uniforms for the film, but those didn't work out. So they had TNG actors borrowing the uniforms of DS9 actors...IIRC, Jonathan Frakes was wearing Avery Brooks's uniform, for example.

Scotty and Chekov were suddenly best friends with Kirk for some reason.

The reason being that their lines were originally written for Spock and McCoy, but the actors didn't want to do the film. Rewatch the Ent-B sequence with that in mind and everything falls into place.

I read a comment saying "I consider the TNG films to exist in an alternate universe, like the relaunch novels", and with Generations, that makes total sense.

The Worst Is Yet to Come (First Contact excepted).

I definitely think you'll enjoy First Contact more, it's a great/fun film if you ask me. Generations is kind of lame most of the time, it has some cool moments though. I'm guessing they thought the gimmick of seeing the TNG crew on the big screen for the first time as well as the gimmick of seeing Kirk and Picard together would be enough to entertain people and so they wouldn't really have to write a great story.

I'm interested to see what you think of Past Tense 1 and 2, I really enjoyed that one though I've heard people say it was too preachy.

Almost forgot that I'm technically starting Voyager possibly tomorrow. I'm watching Past Tense, Part I as we speak, and the VOY pilot comes after Part II going by airdate.

I'm still undecided as to when I'll be watching VOY. I won't alternate episode-by-episode, I'm only watching the pilot now as I've been told there's a fairly noteworthy crossover with DS9, but I'm still deciding whether to alternate in a less strict season-by-season format or just watch all of DS9 before getting onto everything after the VOY pilot.

I think I may go with the former. It's a good hybrid between the two.

The only rule from here with Voyager is finish Voyager before you watch Nemesis. Nemesis has some major Voyager spoilers. Other than that there really aren't any major points of crossing between DS9 and Voy. Other than the first few Voy episodes spawning from a DS9 plot that you already know about. Keep your chin up about Voyager. It really isn't as bad as some rumors say. It is however probably the most uneven of the shows. It's highs are spectacular. But it's lows are like nothing you have yet experienced save perhaps Tabula Rasa. Just keep remembering, so long as Janeway gets coffee nobody (that shes cares about) gets hurt! Do however please feel free to share your first impressions of Neelix. Inquiring minds want to know.

People can argue about how Trekky or actioney J. J.'s films were, but at least they introduced a whole new generation to the franchise, me being one of them. Now that I've seen those two, I hope for a more classic approach to Beyond.

Please God, no. I think that what's been going on in the movies so far is what needs to continue, even more so than bringing back what 'intellectual' qualities were in the original series or TNG.

Actually, there are a few more or less obvious references to the other show that would seem kinda weird if you watch it too much out of sync.
And DS9 has a guest star/character that has a huuuuge connection to a Voyager character that will appear in both shows. Not sure where he sppears first off the top of my head, though.

That would be fine I think.
There are no direct crossovers, so strict adherence to airdates does not matter that much.
Mixing it up is nice, too.
Going seven seasons straight with Voyager can be difficult at times. Breaking that up with a chunk of DS9 will be a nice change of pace every once in a while. :)

Neelix was meh, a little irritating, cheap comic relief character. Getting some Jar Jar vibes from him, but I can't imagine him getting that bad though... ("Oh mooey mooey I step in the poopy!").

The difference is this for me.

The old shows and films make me want to go and explore the galaxy, not even kidding, if I was smarter and more motivated, I'd want to become an astronaut. Kirk and Picard are my moral compasses, they're like family to me.

The new films are fun action romps. Fine. Keep the action, just give it some substance. Why does that idea sound so horrific to you?

Would alternating shows each season be "too much out of sync"?

The Voyager itself and Goldsmith's ethereal opening are definitely the highpoints of the show. And I mean that in no way to diminish the show. Just both elements were the results of masters at the top of their craft. Voyager is one of Star Trek's most graceful and well thought out designs, with a ton of really neat details. (And one big question. Where do they keep all the shuttles? No seriously from here on out start counting them as they go boom.)

While everyone always focuses in on Robert Picardo's outstanding quirky and occasionally grating Doctor as the show stealer. I always think Tim Russ as Tuvok is the often under appreciated heart and soul of the show. He is so solid in the role throughout. One of the best Vulcan's we have yet seen on any screen.

Neelix - It's good to see you have optimism! Although I find your lack of imagination... disturbing. Keep in mind we only had 6 hours of JarJar. Neelix? 7 bloody years! My personal theory is Janeway keeps Neelix around because at heart she truly hates people and wishes them to suffer.

Paris and Harry Kim - Paris remains one of the better standout Star Trek characters. That slightly roguish bad boy with a heart of somewhat tarnished gold. Harry Kim is interesting... With your next session you should hit DS9's Heart of Stone. Which leaves you perfectly synched to watch and compare two characters. Ensign Harry Kim. And Nog the Ferengi. Watch for Promotions, Jobs, Responsibility, Treatment by crew, respect, etc. By the end it makes for a fun comparison.

Oh and you will probably like First Contact a great deal. It is the one movie that finds that center point between Trek Stories with Substance and balls out action romp. It is not without its flaws. But by and large it pulls off what it set out to do extremely well. Since you started with the JJTrek's it may make you feel very much at home.

I have heard Neelix described as the Jar-Jar of Star Trek. But IMO, when they do have a serious episode for him, it's usually a pretty good one. Others may disagree.

Caretaker was a pretty decent start. I know not to expect much from the pilot episodes, but it wasn't bad. The array/caretaker plot was somewhat confusing and unnecessary, but you gotta fill those 90 minutes somehow.

I like Janeway so far. I find it funny that they could've gone home in the very first episode, disregarding the whole seven other seasons, but I understand her choice. Paris was cool, Kim was cool, Neelix was pretty obviously just there for comic relief and was a little grating, but I like the crew so far. It's nice to see a Vulcan again!

The USS Voyager looked sleek and sexy, the intro was fabulous. Thank God for Jerry Goldsmith! No complaints from me.

PLEASE do me a favor while watching Voyager. Stay focused on the crew-count, that means how much people are on the ship at every episode (or at every season). Dont worry, it is not soooo much. There are in the whole series itself just a few numbers, so do not expect crew-numbers in every episode. Dont stress yourself with it, i am just interested to see you as a newbie what you think about it. When you write about particular episodes or whole season, just mention at some time the possible crew-count. This would be great, wanna hear your thoughts about it.
I know, I always talk about this topic, but this is really interesting, because everybody has a different opinion. I already solved the riddle of the mysterious crew-count of the Voyager-crew, but for you it would be too early to read it, because then you see data from episodes, you haven't seen yet.
By the way, just that I mention this, dont feel neccessary about torpedoe or shuttle counting, it is useless.
I wish you fun while watching.

Ah, and i suggest you, to end DS9, then start fresh Voyager. It is really not needed to watch both series at the same time. End Voyager and later only remember while watching Voyager, which season of DS9 it is.

Actually, Generations did do one thing right.

I always liked that one. You can hear traces of and compliments to McCarthy's DS9 theme in it. If you like that one you will be in for a treat with First Contact. Among it's many good points is one of Goldsmith's most beautiful scores. One that is different from all the others and really sticks with you.

Voyager is sure to become a maths class with all the crew members and shuttles I'm going to be counting ;)

There is a great story that Doug Drexler, who worked on Voyager, Enterprise and the new Battlestar Galacitica likes to tell that pretty much sums up the show approaches between Voyager and BSG (which were playing with some similar themes. One lone ship isolated with no resources.)

On Voyager, at the end of every filming day the production crew came in and fully redressed the bridge set. Carpets were cleaned. Consoles were polished, everything was dusted. Then it was all plastic wrapped to protect it. The set was reset every day.

On BSG they never cleaned or redressed the bridge set. They wanted it to reflect the slow deterioration of the ship on its voyage. So any accumulated dirt or stains stayed. They went so far as to declare the main bridge set the official "designated smoking area" in order to start giving things a faded smoke and nicotine tinged look as time went on, and encouraged foot traffic through it in order to increase the wear.

^Nifty story.

"You will never come up against a greater adversary than your own potential."--Dr. Paul Stubbs, TNG, "Evolution"

That sums up VGR in a nutshell for me. It had a premise with loads of potential, and chose to ignore most of that potential and go for "TNG Lite".

Would alternating shows each season be "too much out of sync"?

There really isn't much continuity to speak of between the shows...nothing that's going to confuse you if you watch one series without watching the other.

If you want to keep kind of in sync, and you're watching via DVD, you could try alternating discs--One disc of DS9, one disc of VGR.

(And one big question. Where do they keep all the shuttles? No seriously from here on out start counting them as they go boom.)

They indirectly answered that question when they built the Delta Flyer from scratch.

There's only one point at which the events of DS9 have an effect on Voyager, on the episode "Extreme Risk." It's not enough to make the effort to see the four season of Voyager to line up with the events in DS9 to make it worth your while.

One of the fan-done cutaways I saw of Voyager shows the small, normal shuttlecraft bay, but then shows an enormous hangar one deck below chock-full of LOTS of extra shuttles.

Star Trek Online made an LCARS cutaway display for Voyager when they brought the ship into the game and they placed a TARDIS at the rear of the hangar slot as an easter egg, another way of storing them! :guffaw:

Voyager's resources are limited but they succesfully build a new design, the delta flyer, so building standard shuttles shouldn't be a huge task... ;)
