I officially began my journey through all Star Trek on October 9th...

I wouldn't say the NX-01 bridge shows any Meyer influence, though I imagine he might like the submarine look. Of the movie bridges, the NX-01 is closest to the Ent-E, being smaller and darker than the norm, with all major stations except helm/nav facing in toward the captain.

I strongly prefer both TOS and DS9 to TNG, but they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

^ +1.

I don't watch much Trek from the Berman years. But when I do, it's usually DS9. It explores some interesting themes that continue to be relevant to the real world even years after the show finished.

I'm starting to get very excited to watch DS9 after this season.

Which series, TNG or DS9, did you guys prefer? TNG has been really great so far, it's gonna be hard for DS9 to top it.
I've always liked them both equally so it's really hard to pick.

For me, TNG wins, easily. Actually it's not easy to find anything that can top TNG, if it's even possible... 1st season of 24 comes very close though.

This is just my personal preferences. TNG had greater individual highs, but also far deeper lows among its episodes. Starting from Season 3 onward DS9 with its continuous arcs and building story has the better overall series quality. It is more prone to bring you back episode to episode. Even then it is a matter of personal preference. In many ways DS9 is the least "Star Trek"ish Star Trek series. Yet it's at its absolute best once it embraced that and became its own thing. TNG shows the dream of ST and the dream of the future. Exploration, contact, finding the new and wondrous. DS9 shows actual life in that future. The Federation and its surroundings. How the known societies work and interact.

What are you going to do with 2-(and multi)-parters? Is airdate King, or are you going to watch the entire 2-parter of one series and then make up by watching 2 eps of the other series?

By the way, I strongly urge you to change your Voyager plans. :) Why? Well:
1) If you want the true chronological experience, watch Voyager/DS9 at the same time. Yes, Voyager is mostly separate from DS9, but there ARE a few tiny details you will appreciate more this way:
VOY:Extreme Risk, VOY:Message in a Bottle, DS9: Doctor Bashir I Presume, DS9:Through the Looking Glass
2) Alternating between the two is great if you are in a weak stretch of episodes in one of the two series. Or if you realize you prefer ship-based over station-based.
3) Going back 5 years after DS9 could be a shock. Production values (especially Special Effects) were a lot better in Season 7 DS9 than in Season 1 of Voyager.

I guess DS9 is the ultimate space opera with lots of characters and their (often troubled) relationships, religion and politics. TNG, VOY and ENT are more SF action adventure in space with weird Twilight Zone/The Outer Limits episodes in the mix.
I prefer the latter, so TNG (and VOY) are my favorites, but DS9 has many really strong episodes I like.

One other thing regarding DS9. It had an unusual advantage or influence that none of the other series really had. DS9 had a direct and concurrent rival/competitor/somewhat similar show on the air at the same time and competing in the same syndicated marketspace. Babylon 5. Now both were superb SF shows. Both had similar starting points but each established their own directions. And the sort of mainly friendly but sometimes not rivalry between the production crews actually led to both shows really upping their game as they went along. As they say competition breeds innovation.

Random question, but are there any ENT crossovers or influences in Nemesis whatsoever?
In the Andorian arc in ENT season 4, we see a couple of Remans in the background during the scenes on Romulus. This species was first introduced in Nemesis.

None, other than the Romulan opening scene and some reused sets and costumes. Watch Nemesis when you're done with Voyager. Then watch Enterprise.

Voyager IS the weak stretch.
:ack:
Ouch, harsh. But that was kind of my point. Voyager season 3 has a long stretch of awful episodes. Having DS9 as a backup then is a lifesaver.

There are no real Enterprise crossovers. Enterprise was only just starting to brush on the Romulans a little bit. They were planned to be a major plot point for season 5 I believe.

But Nemesis does have a major spoiler for Voyager. So save it for after the Voyager finale.

As far as Voyager being the weak link. Well yes, if you watch it as a traditional Trek show of hopeful optimistic kind people always seeking to do the right thing in a utopian future (in other words as it was intended) then yeah it's pretty awful. But if you instead view it through the mental filters of modern shows about truly awful people doing horrible things, such as game of thrones, House of Cards, Dexter etc, and view it as a ship of the damned captained by an actual manipulative psychotic sociopath it really gets much better. Much less uneven, and many of the plot and character holes suddenly make sense. ( I really wish I was joking about this. )

Oh it's very bad writing. But the funny thing is that the writing and the writers weirdly over the top fawning over the Janeway character comes together in this way that perfectly mimics a true Sociopath in charge. It's unintentional, but once you see it you can't Unsee it. And it seemingly explains all the roller coaster inconsistencies of the characters and the show. And even picks up on the behind the scenes stresses and loathings between the actors that come through on screen. Pay particular attention to the Harry Kim character and how he is treated by Captain and crew.

That's reaching a bit

Why would Starfleet assign such a clearly unstable person to captain a ship?

Sounds just like bad writing to me unless they fully acknowledge her insanity throughout the show.

A strange fact of life is Sociopath's often do rise to high levels of leadership. Heck some of histories most famous generals were clearly sociopathic. Once you see it Janeway does start to share a few traits with George Patton. And let's just say that evidence does seem to indicate that Starfleet is not particularly screening out such tendencies for leadership. In fact it may be the exact opposite.

Jonathan Frakes also directed another good episode, The Offspring, I believe. And I think he directed one or two of the movies but I'm not sure.

Call yourself a Trekkie? ;)
Frakes directed First Contact (good) and Insurrection (bad).

Shalashaska: I've enjoyed your reviews. As a long-time Star Trek fan (since the early 70s), I really like all the shows almost equally, except for Enterprise, but even it has a several good episodes. (Actually, I've never seen TAS. Tried one episode and just couldn't take it.)

When you start DS9, are you beginning with the third season?? If so, that's a big mistake imho. The first two seasons are weak, but they still have some strong episodes. From the first season DS9, I think three are good to watch: Emissary, Duet, and In the Hands of the Prophet. From the second season, I'd say the three-parter The Homecoming, The Circle, and The Siege are very good, also The Maquis, parts I & II, and then The Tribunal, and finally the Jem'Hadar.

I was in beautiful Ireland a few times long, long ago. Had a wonderful meal at the high table at Trinity College once. Unforgettable.

Eeek!! His singing voice is awful.

As for the spoilers you've ran across. Look at this way, you may know those things happen, but you don't know how they are going to happen.
