I officially began my journey through all Star Trek on October 9th...

And in one of those, the main guest star goes on to become a regular on Voyager (same actor, different character). Not gonna say anything more about it.

Ah, you beat me to it. :)

I think Wil Wheaton guest stars in 4 episodes.

How refreshing it is to see a poster and thread where the discovery of Star Trek, STNG, what have you..is so purely enjoyed, without the negativity so often displayed here.

I don't really have time to rewatch all the shows(in small part because my TV watching time is for the first time in my 45 years of life, taken up with catching up on new scifi shows). At best, I started watching a handful of TOS episodes, which I didn't watch for a long time, and some of the pristine Blurays of STNG. Watched 11001001 and Homesoil. Two favorites from the season.

Wil Wheton recently tweeted "I've finally come to terms with people saying 'shut up, Wesley' to me at cons. I'm not letting it bother me any more."

The very first response was from Patrick Stewart, who tweeted: "Shut up, Wil."

:guffaw:

Actually if i recall correctly, he said he was perma-banning anyone who said that to him on twitter from now on.

People really need to grow up a little. It's not funny anymore.

Even people who physically resembled Wil Wheaton were getting harassed. There was a young guy who attended a couple of the annual SF conventions in Calgary back in the '80s/'90s who got thoroughly tired of being told, "Shut up, Wesley" or other negative "Wesleyisms". He couldn't help how he looked, and it's too bad that people couldn't just let him enjoy his Star Trek fan activities (he hosted a couple of the panel discussions I went to).

I envy that you get to see it all with fresh eyes.
I've loved Trek since I was a kid watching back-to-back reruns on different cable stations in the late 70's. TNG started when I was a sophomore in college, DS9 started after college and I was dating the woman who I would marry, VOY came around when I was newly married, and ENT started right before the birth of my first child. JJ's Trek hit the theaters about a year after my last child was born. It's always been there through major milestones in my life.

I just went through this whole thread. It's cool reading someone's experience watching the shows for the first time. I'm pretty impressed you made it through TAS and the early seasons of TNG! There's some rough moments in those episodes!

I can't wait for you to get to Deep Space 9, and I hope you'll still be updating us on your progress by then. That's my favorite series, but I didn't fully appreciate it until after it was over. So I'm looking forward to reading what you'll think as a first time viewer!

I agree that it's awesome reading a first time viewers reactions. I hope you like Voyager as well when you get around to it.

Damn I reached the end of the thread!

Well I'm enjoying reading about how much you're enjoying Trek for the first time. Keep it up! :D

I'm probably gonna spend the whole week on the slopes thinking about TNG

You might not be the first one to think your skis are warp engines side by side and attempt to jump into hyperspace with them...

Ski instructor: Who's that?
Shalashaka's ski buddy: She's just someone in the middle of TNG marathon, try to ignore all the weird stuff.
Ski instructor: Gotcha, I've been on that "slope" myself.

Watch the Voyager pilot along with DS9 as a small part of it happens on the station (I hope that is not a massive spoiler) but the DS9 season 3 events have something to do with Voyager... It might feel odd to watch Voyager pilot after DS9 ends... maybe.

Re: I officially began my journey through all Star Trek on October 9th

The only performance I wasn't a huge fan of was Kirstie Alley's Saavik, she didn't convince me as a Vulcan. Not disappointed to see she was re-casted in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

As I read through this wonderful thread. Thank you for sharing it all. It is great seeing all of this through someone youngs eyes as they see it for the first time, and sharing the experience and seeing how it ages.

One very minor heads up, probably a month too late, that hopefully someone else already told you about. The Kristie Alley Saavik thing seems strange because a few bits of information got left on the cutting room floor. (much like the brief scene where Scotty introduces his shiny new soon to be dead engineers mate Nephew to Kirk. Thats why he carried him to the bridge) But Saavik. Saavik seems un Vulcan because she isn't a Vulcan. She like Spock is a half breed. She is half Vulcan Half Romulan. But they never actually told you this in the theatrical version. It showed up in deleted scenes and the novelization. That's why she seems less stiff and Vulcanlike. By ST3 they had pretty much just gone with full Vulcan.

I thought TNG Season 5 is when they started to pick up the technical skills and budgets to really start giving things better sharper looks. The Uniforms went to reasonable wools. The sets started to not look like an Ikea display etc.

You can start watching Voyager while watching DS9. But only bother with the 2 hour pilot. Really the only connection (not much of a spoiler) Is Voyager departs from DS9 and has some interactions there right at the beginning. After that, they were on separate networks and never touched again.

As you go into DS9 you will see the same patterns. Much of the first season just feels like TNG, but in a different setting. Then they start to find their footing. Then somewhere between 2nd and 3nd season things kick into high gear. And you'll know it by
A certain tough little hero ship shows up

You will enjoy Undiscovered Country. It is a great fun film. One of the best of the Trek movies, and probably the closest to the feel and stylings of the more modern JJ Abrams nuTrek stuff. People always rant about how Into Darkness is a Wrath of Khan remake, but I honestly think it "borrows" almost as much from Undiscovered Country. It does the job it needs and sends the original crew out the right way. (unlike Generations...)
