How long were you fooled by "Whispers"?

Gold Grizzly

Vice Admiral
Admiral
The first time I watched this episode, I didn't work out what was going on until it was explained right at the end of the episode. Immediately before that, I had been expecting it to be a two parter, as there seemed to be no way to resolve everything in the remaining time.

I've always wondered whether I was being unusually dopey, or whther most people were caught out by the surprise ending.

AT what stage did the rest of you get it?

Pretty sure that I was convinced that it was a 'subversive alien takeover' episode, and that O'Brien was the only one unaffected.

Great episode.

The same as Angel. I was convinced this was an 'invasion of the body snatchers' type scenario... I had no idea O'Brien was the odd man out.

Indeed, a great episode. :)

I don't remember now what I was thinking when I first watched it. As it's written, it's a toss-up as to whether O'Brien is different or everybody else is. In any case, Meaney's acting is brilliant in this episode.

I'll admit it that usually I can figure out what's going on in these types of episodes quickly. This one, however, stumped me and I didn't figure it out until the end after we saw Miles.

When the revelation came. This was a great episode because it has you completely fooled. I think what I like about the rewatching (Most people say episodes like this are not as exciting and they have a point) this episode was looking for all those hints and clues in the episode itself. They hid the secret really well.

I think I was fooled the first time, but like AdmiralGarak I can't really remember. It is definitely an enjoyable episode to rewatch, though. :)

Well, I knew there had to be SOME twist...but I wasn't sure what it was until near the ending.

It wasn't until Jake asked the Chief to cooperate and basically stand down that I started to ask what's wrong with O'Brien, and what's really wrong with this picture? I didn't suspect that he wasn't the/a real O'Brien until the very last scenes. O’Brien is such a normal, unassuming character who's used to unraveling mysteries of some kind or another, that I suspected everyone but him, when it seems to me now that I should have suspected him long before that point.

Imagine everyone arrayed in suspicion of a particular character, and we still see everything through his eyes? Of course we had no choice largely due to a cleverly written script, but still, I like to think I'm more perceptive than normal. Wrong.

I don't think I saw the episode when it originally aired. I think I ruined the "suprise" and read what happened on Star Trek's official web-site before seeing the episode.
:( But it definitely was a great episode!! One of those nice emotional Trek episodes- gotta love 'em!

Just wanted to chime in and say that I love this episode, too! And maybe I'm just stupid but I never realize what's going on in such episodes before it is revealed. Maybe I'm just too intrigued by the story. However, Colm Meaney's wonderful in this episode ...

I think that's what it really comes down to. The Chief is just so down to earth, and by that point we've come to know him pretty well.
There's nothing to indicate that there's something wrong about him. I think I also got to wondering when Jake turned him in (because Jake also seemed normal up until that point).
So, essentially, I was fooled right up until the end as well. It was really very well done and one of DS9's better episodes with a science fiction concept during that time.

Until the end. I thought it was the typical "aliens invade, take over everyone except one guy" type of episodes. Only after rewatching it did I notice the clues pointing to it all the time.

I clued when he tried contacting the Starfleet Admiral and she appeared to be part of the conspiracy...I just thought: No they can't ALL be involved. Most of the episode was over by then though.
