Dang, am I the only one here who really discovered the awesomeness of this series through streaming?

Reading this enjoyable thread, and had to stop and comment right here...there are some of us "here" that had no choice but to watch DS9 in its original broadcast form simply because "streaming" was probably some fly-fishing term, or some such, and "Netflix" was what Jordan seemed to keep doing with the ball in the NBA...so funny... :guffaw:

I had a choice to watch this series during its original broadcast. I chose not to watch. I had a new opportunity thanks to streaming. That's when I gave it a chance and became a fan.

Really sorry for screwing up the poll guys! Won't happen again (by me)! I wish I could just remove the poll from the thread altogether.

For what it is worth, dub, you did not screw up anything by my reckoning, and you gave me a much needed smile and laugh!!!

:) :techman:

I only became a fan last year. I missed the original run - had a brand new, very demanding baby, and was stuck in a horrible marriage, so really didn't have the time. It's too bad. I could have learned so much from Major Kira that might have helped me get out of a really bad situation.

I watched from the DVDs last year, as the last Trek series I was going to watch end to end, and I discovered it is my total favourite.

Amazing, how much we can learn about solving Life Problems from watching and learning from Star Trek...had some similar challenges as you mention that were helped along by ST...hope you are happier and better now! :) :techman:

Hijol, I am in a much better space now, in a second marriage that has lasted far longer than the first. My son is grown now, and things are pretty good. I wish I had been Kira back then though, since it would have really made a difference.

Thanks for your wishes, and thanks to Trek for making my life a ton better, at least now. I am thoroughly converted to DS9 and love its adult themes, shades of grey decisions and storylines that look so much like our times now. It has aged beautifully.

P.S. My son was addicted to TNG as an infant. At barely 2, he would quote the following: "Face, Final Fwonteeah. Deze boyages Stahship Ennapwize."

For me, the honest truth is that it took me a while to get into it. It first aired when I was in my early teens and I was one of the ones that couldn't imagine Star Trek being Star Trek with the main crew manning a space station. It took a little bit of effort, but I stuck with it through the first few seasons, but when Damar showed up and the Dominion War stuff got started, I really got hooked on how the episodes unfolded like chapters in a novel. Now it's really hard for me to decide which I like more, TOS or DS9.

I started watching regularly while Season 5 was in summer re-runs. I was interested in catching Trials and Tribble-ations, and I managed to catch several excellent Season 5 episodes while waiting for it to appear. (I also started watching daily re-runs of earlier seasons.) I remember that Nor The Battle To The Strong boosted my interest quite a bit, as did In Purgatory's Shadow and By Inferno's Light.

I was reading some fanfic, figured out who Garak was and that he was intriguing, generally enjoyed the show as a whole, and started becoming a devoted fan.

I got into Star Trek in general because of re-runs of TNG airing on Spike one summer back when I was in high school, so about just under ten years ago now. I got hooked pretty quick and eventually watched the series chronologically. Once I was done, I wanted more and DS9 was the logical next place to go. I'm glad I did because DS9 has been my favorite of all series. As some others have said though, it took me several episodes to really get into it and let this new cast of characters grow on me.

I've always been aware of Star trek and caught the odd rerun when it was on TV and enjoyed it but never considered it was something I would be a "fan" of like Doctor Who.

I was reintroduced to it by accident when me and friends went to the cinema to see Coraline but missed the showing. Instead of wait for the next one we decided to watch Star Trek. I really enjoyed it and decided to go back and watch the TV series properly. DS9 is the last one I watched and it became my favourite.

It's not my favorite Trek, but it is Trek. So I have to love it.

I became a fan with the very first episode. Day one of broadcast

I watched TNG during it's original run. When it was done, I didn't watch DS9 just because I didn't like the idea of a stationary station.

I started watching TNG again on Netflix last year. It got removed from Netflix while I watching Season 6 so I decided to start watching the Original Series, finished that. Then Netflix put TNG back on. Finished that and decided to give DS9 a chance. Loved it right away. I'm watching Voyager now, but consider DS9 the best of the bunch.

It was a couple of things:
*The first show to have a black lead who was in charge.
*Jadzia Dax who, at the time, resembled a girl I went to high school with. And, who caused me to be tongue-tied when there was an opportunity to talk to her. Even though, for me, it wasn't the right time....(*sigh* high school). She was always hanging around 'the bruthas' which I thought was interesting...
*Actual battles!
*'Trials and Tribble-ations'

Tell me about it. Kids these days and their newfangled "streaming" . . . :)

Me, I got hooked on DS9 when Pocket Books called me and told me they needed a book based on this new Star Trek show that was in the works . . . .

I liked DS9 in it's original run, but I don't think I appreciated it as much as I did when the DVDs were coming out.

Until I inhaled all 7 seasons of "Doctor Who" just recently.

You still have the first 26 to watch then. :p

I watched DS9 from the start of its BBC2 run in the UK, and always enjoyed it, but only really grew to appreciate it later as I grew up and began to see more in it.

I watched DS9 when it originally aired but i was a child and while i enjoyed it i didnt pay much attention to the ongoing storylines and later forgot pretty much everything about it. When i got my first job during my late teens and was earning money for the very first time but had no bills or anything to pay since i still lived at home i was looking around for something i could spend my money on and i ended up collecting DS9 on dvd one season at a time.

This was actually an odd decision for me to make since i had forgotten everything about it except what kira and Quark looked like and i couldnt recall their names. But i recalled enjoying the series so i ordered the first season online and got all excited because it was some thing i had bought with my money that i had earned not money given to me by parental units. And watching it was so much fun and i rediscovered all these characters who i had loved the first time round but forgotten about and actually payed attention to the ongoing plotlines and character arcs and saw how brilliant they were.

I would wait until my bank balance reached a certain amount then buy the next season and i would watch it and then wait for my bank balance to reach double the previous amount and then buy the next season and it went on like this until i had all seven seasons. I gradually collected DS9 season by season and it was one of the best decisions i ever had as it became my favourite trek series and both the series and the physical dvd boxsets that i collected have a great nostalgic value because of how i collected them.

That's a neat story! Similar story for me with my first job, except I purchased TOS films on VHS and the film scores on CD. Didn't have a DVD player...I don't think they were big yet. CDs were new, at least for me. Back then some CDs came in the obnoxiously long boxes. I wish I kept those boxes.

I started with the DS9 novels including the relaunch. Until then I haven´t seen much of DS9 episodes. While reading the novels I started to buy the DVDs.

i saw a few of the early episodes as a kid, but I didn't start watching the series regularly until season 5/6.

I didn't like the idea of spin-offs in general, so when I learned that this was one of a spin-off of the original star trek I didn't think much of it. It took a complex set of circumstances for me to start watching and eventually liking it.
