How did you become a DS9 fan?

How did you first become a Niner?

I watched from the start. Being stuck out in a space station as opposed to gallivanting all over the galaxy made this Star Trek series fresh and exciting. I loved the fact that all the characters had flaws and you could clearly see development in them all - well, almost all. While I do love my TOS, this one comes pretty damn close.

Dang, am I the only one here who really discovered the awesomeness of this series through streaming?

I started watching it in 1998, because that's when I got cable. So a lot of the story arcs were confusing, but I enjoyed it anyway, and there were some reruns airing then too which helped put things into place. Then the baby came along and TV watching was put on hold for a couple of years. Then I got the DVD set and I've watched the whole series in order about 5 times.

Nope. I was only eight when DS9 came out. I watched it off and on, but really only for Quark. I wasn't old enough to get it.

Then - boom - a couple years ago I decided to watch the TNG-centric episodes of DS9 and I realized the plots and characters were far, far more sophisticated than any other Trek series. I was hooked. The last two seasons, in particular, were incredible, and the last ep invariably makes me cry.

After seeing all of DS9, I now find Voyager and Enterprise nearly unwatchable.

A conversation in the BD thread made me think of this as a topic. I'm curious how many of you became fans of DS9 (as I did) through streaming.

I have only been a DS9 fan for 2 years. I found Netflix to be the ideal place for DS9, which was an episodic show that really wanted to be a serial. It was something in between with its ongoing arcs and extended cast of recurring characters. I found it to be unique among the Trek shows, and it became my favorite once I completed the series. :techman:

During its original run, I watched just about all of TNG. I watched a big chunk of VOY. I watched a couple of episodes of DS9, but not enough to even make it count. I watched it enough to know I couldn't get into it at the time. Plus if I'm remembering correctly, the syndicate kept changing when it would air which diminished my motivation to watch even further. So I'm very thankful for streaming services as a new option to watch these shows I missed out on growing up!

For fans of the show, how did you first become a Niner?
- Like you I have a very similar story. I got into Voyager (on the recommendation of a boy I liked in middle school). Scorpion was the first episode I saw so DS9 would have been in it's 6th season. I was obsessed with it and ventured into the other shows but Voyager was always number one for me. I remember reading online that people would say DS9 is a better show. I was pretty hard headed and didn't want to believe it. Finally I broke down and watched some of it in syndication and didn't really think it was all that great. Years later they reran it on SpikeTV and I caught a lot of the episodes on there. I remember thinking it was pretty good and I promised myself that I would watch the whole thing in chronological order someday.

When I renewed my netflix streaming account last year I saw that all of Trek was on there. I was currently watching a series when I saw that they had DS9. I thought well I will just watch two shows at once. Why not!? After 2 days I had watched more of DS9 than that other show in 2 weeks. I couldn't stop watching it and ate episode after episode. I got so addicted to it that I watched the entire show in less than three months! :wtf:

I'm currently watching TNG in chronological order, and will finish my run of TOS after. But I think it's safe to say that DS9 will be my favorite Trek. I give it props for doing something different with the brand and succeeding. I can tell you I may have gotten teary eyed during some episodes of Trek but none of them moved me the way DS9's The Visitor did. I have never balled so hard through an episode of tv. I would have loved to have watched it when it was on.

None of the above. I missed out on the original run because I was always working. But when the DVD's first came out I bought and watched, just waiting for the next to come out on DVD.

I only became a fan last year. I missed the original run - had a brand new, very demanding baby, and was stuck in a horrible marriage, so really didn't have the time. It's too bad. I could have learned so much from Major Kira that might have helped me get out of a really bad situation.

I watched from the DVDs last year, as the last Trek series I was going to watch end to end, and I discovered it is my total favourite.

Phase 1 my brother forced me to watch it when it first came out I absolutely hated it. I was 6.

Phase 2 in the summer of 97 me my grandmother and brother started watching it, in the evenings before bed.

I got hooked by weyune drinking that glass of poison, it just memorized me in some way.

I watched it until the end, without really seeing much before season 4.

Phase 3

It starting airing on spike TV, got really into the full series as I never watched the early episode. Although I stopped watching it before I got to season 5.

Phase 4, which was about 3 years ago, after getting heavily into BSG, it really made sense like never before. I realized you had to skip alot of the first three season.

The continual problem I had was that the first few seasons were so bad, not to mention a bit of filler that pretty much ruined the whole deal for me.

I think they should of had a stream lined version of the show, instead of airing all the filler.

I can understand why it wasnt more popular, yet it was by far the best star trek in my opinion, just extremely heavy content that dates itself far better than anything else trek.

I watched it off and on during the original run but I wasn't that into it just because I was really attached to the Roddenberry idealism at the time and I saw it as stomping all over that.

Later on I watched all the way through it when it aired on Spike TV, and that's when I started to like it. So 'Streaming service' is closest for me.

Well, I'm not a fan of anything, but, I came to love DS9 as my favorite Trek series when:

A. They got the Defiant. (then the series at least had my attention)
B. Worf joined the cast, and the Feds were back at war with the Klingons! (then I was hooked)

I liked DS9 and watched it during its original run. But post 9/11 in reruns truly made me a fan. Its plotlines became very relevant and Sisko knew how to run a war!

I would say overall the first couple of seasons of DSN were better in terms of quality than the same first couple of seasons of TNG.

Sure there were some clunkers in them, but there were some very good ones i.e. "Duet". Just like in TNG, DSN began to hit its stride in S3, and the early season look weak when compared against them.

"Duet" is still one of my favorite episodes, as is "Progress." I loved the conflict created by the new provisional government, and the faltering first steps they were trying to make after being freed from their occupation.

Another reason I'm a fan is because I loved the spirituality in the show. I loved the way it was presented, the way it was explored. I'm not religious myself, but I understood and respected Major Kira's faith, and I also understood and respected Commander Sisko's lack thereof early on. I think they had an excellent dialogue going, in that regard.

To me, DS9 just got everything right.

Reading this enjoyable thread, and had to stop and comment right here...there are some of us "here" that had no choice but to watch DS9 in its original broadcast form simply because "streaming" was probably some fly-fishing term, or some such, and "Netflix" was what Jordan seemed to keep doing with the ball in the NBA...so funny... :guffaw:

Amazing, how much we can learn about solving Life Problems from watching and learning from Star Trek...had some similar challenges as you mention that were helped along by ST...hope you are happier and better now! :) :techman:

None of these choices corresponds to how I became a fan of DS9, sorry.

I had a choice to watch this series during its original broadcast. I chose not to watch. I had a new opportunity thanks to streaming. That's when I gave it a chance and became a fan.

Really sorry for screwing up the poll guys! Won't happen again (by me)! I wish I could just remove the poll from the thread altogether.
