How did Kirk make Captain so fast

Yes the mere fact that Pine looks nothing like Shatner (except to a very old and feeble Spock) proves that he isn't the same man living in another reality but surely they could have come up with a better reason to give command of a Starship to a rookie, and not just any Starship!!!

William Shatner with France Nuyen on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Pause it at 1:33 and you'll see something very close to Chris Pine. :bolian:

I agree. Look how hard it is for a normal Starfleet Cadet to get to be Captain!!! Picard had to be stabbed through the heart otherwise the best he could do is Lieutenant JUNIOR GRADE at past SIXTY and he was a VALEDICTORIAN!!!
Picard comes from old "money" (his family owns property and a winery), so, that's another path to success.

Does it matter? Last time I checked he was playing James Kirk in Star Trek not William Shatner in the William Shatner Story.

If the franchise is to last decades more. "James T. Kirk" could become an abstract concept, just as James Bond, he could have many distinct appearances. For a time people resented the fact that J. Bond was played by a blond and now they're used to it.

I don"t recall that much complaining when Roger Moore was cast. ;)

You call that blond?

Kirk got promoted to Captain after beating up evil Starfleet Captain Balthazar Edison, who tried to destroy Starbase Yorktown with a drone fleet and some life draining tech he scrounged up somewhere. It was the first of many, many evil Starfleet Captains/Admirals that Kirk would meet in his lifetime.

And he actually would have been promoted to flag rank right there had he not turned it down (because "admirals don't fly"); voluntary grade reductions would become his favored career move, yet he'd always hold the pips of Rear Admiral in his back pocket just in case...
