I've always loved this one. I got it with a model kit I bought once.
I recall this cutaway poster from around the late 1980s:

I had both of those on my wall growing up. They were awesome.![]()

Exactly why I have zero problems bumping up the size of the Enterprise. The rec deck set in TMP was definitely off scale. It couldn’t have been as big as seen in the film. Then again the shuttlecraft hangar in TOS couldn’t have been as big as depicted.
Wasn't it original designed to be significantly smaller? After Where No Man Has Gone Before, Wasn't it modified with the smaller Bridge Dome and given more lighting and windows in an effort to bump up the scale?Jefferies designed the Enterprise such that everything would fit.

Certainly helps this diagram from the bridge make sense, with the saucer rim being only a single deck.Yep:
How big was the Enterprise?
I don't have an appropriately scaled TOS Enterprise, but I did put my 1/1000 scale Discoprise next to my 1/1000 scale Voyager. The 442m length of the Enterprise does look great next to a 343m Voyager. Makes Voyager come off as sleek and advanced next to the older, more cumbersome Enterprise...www.trekbbs.com
Yes, but that small size didn’t last long. By the time of the second pilot, WNMHGB, they had already decided to upsize the ship. And it’s from that point onward Jefferies designed the other familiar interiors. In “The Cage” and WNMHGB we see very little of the ship’s interiors, interiors that could fit any size.Wasn't it original designed to be significantly smaller? It certainly establishes that there is precedent for upscaling the Enterprise, should those in power feel there is a need. It's happened at least 3 times now, with the TOS Enterprise, the SNW Enterprise and the JJPrise.Yes, but that small size didn’t last long. Not your call. The JJ and SNW universes are not of the same continuity as TOS.
A lot of us love TOS as it is and we try to make things work within the context its creators intended.
Nope. Don't confuse "stuff I don't like" with "Not in continuity"It certainly is my call, or any fan’s, to ignore what we don’t like. SNW and the JJverse can die in the gutter as far as I’m concerned.
No, it's up to the owners of the intellectual property. If they say it's the Prime Timeline, it's the Prime Timeline. It certainly is my call, or any fan’s, to ignore what we don’t like. SNW and the JJverse can die in the gutter as far as I’m concerned.
