How big was the Enterprise?

I've always loved this one. I got it with a model kit I bought once.

I recall this cutaway poster from around the late 1980s:

I had both of those on my wall growing up. They were awesome.

Continuing the size discussion, another point against the smaller size is this shot from The Motion Picture.

I have a real hard time believing there's 2 decks in that saucer rim when you look at the size of the cast walking on the hull.

Jefferies designed the Enterprise such that everything would fit. But Jefferies didn’t have the final say in how sets were built.

Over the years a lot of thought has been expended on the TOS shuttlecraft and hangar deck wherein more realistic visions of what it could/would have looked like have been done, by myself included. The main changes are the flight deck would not have been as long as shown and the shuttlecraft itself would have looked larger.

Wasn't it original designed to be significantly smaller? After Where No Man Has Gone Before, Wasn't it modified with the smaller Bridge Dome and given more lighting and windows in an effort to bump up the scale?

:) Yep:

:) Yep:
Certainly helps this diagram from the bridge make sense, with the saucer rim being only a single deck.

Yes, but that small size didn’t last long. By the time of the second pilot, WNMHGB, they had already decided to upsize the ship. And it’s from that point onward Jefferies designed the other familiar interiors. In “The Cage” and WNMHGB we see very little of the ship’s interiors, interiors that could fit any size.

My take on what the TOS shuttlecraft and hangar flight deck would really look like within a 947 ft. ship.

There is a small error in my layout I didn’t catch until later. On the 11 ft. filming miniature the hangar clamshell doors are not purely spherical. They’re actually flattened a bit, which would allow a bit more length to the flight deck, but not enough to radically change what I was able to work out.

It certainly establishes that there is precedent for upscaling the Enterprise, should those in power feel there is a need. It's happened at least 3 times now, with the TOS Enterprise, the SNW Enterprise and the JJPrise.

If you accurately model the flight deck miniature as seen in the original FX and pretend that there are no rooms behind the observation windows and shave a bit off the alcove interiors then it will fit inside a 947' Enterprise :)

But the fitment issues would be solved with a slightly larger ship

It certainly is my call, or any fan’s, to ignore what we don’t like. SNW and the JJverse can die in the gutter as far as I’m concerned.
No, it's up to the owners of the intellectual property. If they say it's the Prime Timeline, it's the Prime Timeline.

But lets not go down that route. This thread has been pretty civilized, and whenever someone brings up that argument, the thread inevitably becomes solely about that topic.

The thread was started in TOS forum—and not the GenTrek forum—so it would seem the question pertains to the Original Series E so I fail to see how SNW or the JJverse has any bearing on how big the Enterprise is being portrayed in TOS. Retcons are irrelevant to this discussion. Only the data points presented in TOS or created by the makers of that show matter.
IMO.
