Why ?

Pretty easy answer there.

Established entertainment companies want to negate risk and 'original' ideas being given money to be developed are becoming more and more the exception.

I don't see why not. The films were good, but hardly so definitive that the book material never needs to be touched again.

Don't see what there is to gain (money obviously)
It's reminds me of that string of live action Disney classics that was definitely not done for money and copyright reasons.

Yeah, but the later books should have been a lot shorter. The Phoenix movie was the shortest of the bunch (if we count Hallows as one big movie) for good reason: that book sucks rotten troll toes.

I thought "Goblet of Fire" was the worst novel. It was unnecessarily padded.
