Harry Kim's promotion... or lack of it.

Janeway liked protocol a lot.
And Harry was a senior officer but in reality the most junior officer on the ship outside of common crewmen.
Protocol might have demanded a promotion of everyone who had seniority, too, if she ever did so.

"Common Crewmen"?

You're being classist just a little bit.

Enlisted ranks. There are many of them, which are difficult to rise through, and there should be at least 10 times as many enlisted personnel as Officers. Wouldn't it be odd if because of the technology/autonomization that Starfleet actually needed 10 times as many officers than enlisted personnel because they didn't need grunt work any more, just persons who make decisions and take responsibility?

The highest enlisted rank can still be bossed around by an ensign on his or her first day.

However a department head side steps rank. Which is How O'Brien could boss around officers in matters pertaining to his department, and Kim could boss around anyone.

This future is filled with very weird things like why do they use a lieutenant to carry padds to places while it is the stupidest task there is, and it shouldn't even be necessary as an intranet could carry the information more efficiently. In fact those padds are a stupid archaism.

Unless they are somewhat overcautious of cyberattacks?

(Yes, we all saw the Battlestar pilot, or should have.)

Starfleet technology is not as networked as it could be.

Did you see how effective that prefix code was in WOK?

I am afraid I don't know what WOK means, outside a kicthen that is.

Besides if their computer is vulnerable to cyber attacks from other ships then they are all doomed. It's much easier to blow up a ship with a computer virus than with a torpedo spread, as Eddington has demonstrated.

I'm amused now that it's not 15 thousand random alphanumerics from a 100 different languages from a dozen different worlds.

Remember in Brothers, when Data took the ship and locked down the bridge?

I just assumed the archaic PADD carrying served as a dialog starter to keep the story moving

I mean why bring the "Carbon conversions" to the ready room a few steps away from the big chairs? If Janeway can access logs and files from the central computer on her Playskool® laptop, why not email them, Chakotay?
" Kathryn, Those carbon conversion readings you wanted are under file number 58204-99beta" - Your Angry Warrior [backspace] Commander Chakotay.

He had an office. I suspect he'd be in it more if we didn't need to worry about pacing or set building. He'd deliver personally anyway to just be in her space.

Back to topic, if the excuse is there aren't enough positions to fill or whatever why not make it on record that so and so need promotion upon arrival on Earth subject to approval after their debriefing? Kim did deserve a slight 'raise' in ranks.

The problem isn't that Harry's an ensign. The problem is that Harry is treated like senior staff.

Sometimes I think Harry was just lucky that he happened to be the on-duty Ops officer when the Caretaker pulled them through space, and Janeway kind of imprinted on him at that point, subconsciously welcoming him 'into the loop' of senior officers, despite his rank.

If Mortimer Harren hadn't swapped shifts with Harry that day, those seven years would have turned out very differently for both of them. ;)

Just rewatched (part of) Non-sequitur .

After watching, I thought that seventh-season ensign Harry must have cursed himself every now and then for not just accepting the new order of events in that ep :)

I think Harry could realistically have climbed up by season seven to the actual position he had (I mean regardless of rank) instead of having been given that position in season 1 rightaway.

Then again, maybe there was a shortage of higher ranking officers right after caretaker and some lowly ensign had to be given such a responsible position because it had to be filled.

Do we know anything about the rank distribution anyway ? How many ensigns/ lieutenants / lt cmdr 's etc are there on Voyager ?

There used to be a website that accounted for this. Over ninety persons in the crew were named, and nearly 30 had been killed or left or didn't exist anymore... But almost all of those 90 names are officers.

There's at least two times that the writers got the gender wrong on expositional characters, so the no-prize explanation is that these crew are either siblings or married, but that's neither here nor there.

I'm still sticking with the fact that Kim wasn't that needed, especially after Seven's arrival. His position is one of the only ones that could easily be replaced by an automated system. Even Neelix had greater importance, especially during those times when the replicators go down.

It"s amazing how resourceful Data was in that episode for someone who was basically sleepwalking.

Makes sense to me :-)
