Spoilers Halo: Season One - Discussion Thread

Yeah, the lore is quite deep on this series so some aspects for casual viewers can be missed. And I'm more a casual fan, and I know that the lore regarding Master Chief, the Spartan program (1, 2 3, 4) all have a long history.
I don't know, I didn't feel lost or that I was missing anything, and I only played through the first game once, on PC, 15 years ago.
Through cultural osmosis I'm aware of Reach being destined to get flattened by the Covenant who manage to kill most if not all of the other Spartans in the process. I'm of course aware of Cortana, and of the progenitor tech. One assumes that artefact is going to lead them to a ring, and then the flood get unleashed and all hell breaks loose. etc. etc.

To be honest, I doubt someone with even less knowledge than me is going to struggle to follow it either.
Not even the fans like it. At least the circles I'm in. Deviates too much from the source material.
Well I assumed that since he took the helmet off the die-hards are having conniptions (and I can kind of sympathise since I'm a Dredd fan, but also on the other hand it's not something that matters to me personally.) I guess I was talking about the more middle of the road fans that just played some of the games back in the day and have fond memories, not the ones that also read all the tie-in novels, edited 20% of the fan wiki, and committed every episode of Red Vs. Blue to memory.

Mostly what I'm getting at is that once you strip out all of the cosmetic trappings, so far there's really not much of interest going on there, and thus not a lot for non-fans to really gain any purchase on. Right now it's 100% being carried by Yerin Ha's performance, at least on that front, which is probably not going to be enough unless the plot gets WAY more interesting.

To me the Halo franchise is mostly about the games. The novels exist in a different category for me and now so does this new series. I don't need all three to line up with a perfectly linear chronology or set of behaviors to enjoy this new show.

Besides, it'll never match up to my in-game excitement over the years which has been pretty widespread so I go into this show knowing it's not going to be what I've previously played or seen.

In the games the war started in 2525. By the time Halo begins in 2552 it's the final year of the war.
Oh, OK. I didn't realize the war had been going on that long in the games.
But it seems unlikely that the UNSC has been able to keep the existence of the Covenant secret for that long in the show universe, if the war's been anything like it is in the games.

I’m assuming that this is the early days of the war since the human civil war ended once the outer colonies started to get glassed. The planet shown at the beginning was the second planet that was glassed in the games shortly after the start of the war.

Except the show is set in 2552. And Parangosky mentioned they had been fighting the Covenant for years. So I really think they are just toning down the war in this continuity.

Never played the game. Never read the books. All I knew going in was there's a guy called "Master Chief". Interesting enough to make me watch the next episode. For some reason even the non CGI parts look CGI to me. Film stock, lighting, filters or my imagination? Dunno.
Does Master Chief go rogue in the game?
What's the titular "Halo"? Or is that a surprise?

Did you update yourself via Google on the key points of the background?

I guess some elements will stay the same such as Spartans originally developed and trained to fight Insurgents and Rebels but when the Covenant (a conglomeration of various alien races) invaded in force they, and especially Master Chief, were pivotal for the defence of mankind as a whole. However since the show deviated already from the game lore no one can say which elements stay and which will change.

One thing is for sure - since the show is called Halo and not Master Chief we will definitely see at least one ( they are gigantic rings in space and there's actual land, vegetation and climate on the surface where most of the story happens once they get there).

I missed that line, but it still seems like it still seems to me like the war hasn't been going on as long as it had in the games. Even if it's been years, I find it doubtful that it's been 27 years.

I think the Covenant are just making exterminating humanity a lower priority. Might be making them smarter about it this time around since they need a least one human around to push the big red button to get their mass suicide “Great Journey” under way, so might be a good idea to keep potential spares around if something happens to the one they got.

Well, for me, I'd only played the first game way back when it came out on PC (Until last year when I got the Master Chief edition and am currently on ODST - having finished Reach first). My experience with the franchise was for more novel (and music) based. One of my mates did get up to Halo 5 as they were released (and read none of the novels).

He hasn't seen the series yet so I'm curious as to his opinion when he does. For what it's worth, I found the first episode ok and will be watching next weeks. Going off some of the comments online though, people seem to dislike it (Guess they've got the preview)

Halo is already P+'s most watched premiere. Get ready for 5-6 Halo shows that people hate but continue to watch every week and then gripe about why it's not on Netflix.

Probably going to pop this suck on tonight before I go to sleep. I haven't played Halo in a because I've been a PS3/PS4 guy, but I spent plenty of hours playing Halo on the OG X-Box in 2005/2006/

I thought the first part with the battle on Madrigaul was amazing. The scene of the Pelican dropping Master Chief from the air who lands and starts wrecking the Covenant was awesome.

I do think having Master Chief go AWOL in the first episode might be a mistake. I think it would have been better story telling to build a season long arc where Master Chief slowly question orders and then goes AWOL later in the season.

I also heard that episode 2 is a filler episode which is disappointing. Why do a filler episode in only the second episode of the season?
