good excuse for a film to be in space?

Isn't that why so many famous Westerns are called Spaghetti Westerns? Because so many of them were shot by Italians in European locations?

Yep, exactly. Most of the cast and crew was Italian, and they often filmed in Spain (or Southern Italy) because of the similarity of the landscape with Mexico and the US Southwest.

Space is still an uncharted territory and it leaves much more space :) for artistic freedom. You are much less bound by reality and is there is less of a chance that those annoying knowitalls will critisize you for not describing exact number of guns on some navy ship. And you can have allegory about reality but still retain deniability.

When Earth was still not explored in 19 century they were doing such stories about some unxeplored islands. In 20 century it could no longer work.
Alternative possibility which is popular now is fantasy setting or alternative history.

Not to plays the Devil's Advocate here, but...

Would you be able to create the visual splendor of Pandora on boring old Earth?
Yes, because there are places on Earth that aren't boring at all. Some places are even more amazing than anything seen in Avatar.

More amazing than ANYTHING in Avatar? Where are these places? I'm overdue for a holiday!

I suppose an eccentric film maker could have one of his film reels launched into orbit with the excuse that it is for posterity's sake, or because it would be cool.

The easiest of the "good excuses" is for scientific research and exploration. Experimenting with low gravity, or something so dangerous that doing it near (let alone on) Earth would be phenomenally stupid. Such as, I don't, creating an artificial black hole as a power source or something like that. As long as you keep the focus of the story revolving around the topic at hand, it's as good an excuse as anything you'd need.

I mean, it's not like we don't do these things in reality already. Sure, not to the degree that you'd want to make a movie about it, but exploring and experimenting in space is something that goes on in the real world. Why not in a movie?

But if you're just going to rationalize every conceivable idea away by replacing it with something else, what's the point in even asking the question? "Why use aliens when you can just use a fantasy race?" "Why explore the moons of Jupiter when you can explore the magical realm of Foobaloo?" etc.

Here's a thing, a phrase I came up with a while ago, to explain my love of SF drama:

If drama is about ordinary people in extraordinary situations, the SF drama people is about ordinary people in really extraordinary situations.

i'm still looking for unique stuff
but i liked your angle on the subject :bolian:

Hi
most of the space films & tv shows don't have a good excuse to be in space.
i mean, they could be easily be set in sea for example. Instead of "sailing" with a space ship - sail with a normal ship etc...
do you know about a good "excuse" for a story to be set in space?:)

Because space is way more interesting. Good enough excuse for me.

'because its cool" its not much of an excuse to me.
don't get me wrong, its nice & all... but its not enough.

From my earlier point about a certain Saga.

Solo: Not much further, just beyond that islet.

Kenobi: That's no islet...

I do wish some writers would remember that space is not an ocean and not think so 2 dimensionally.

I don't think a story needs to have a particular reason to be set in space, over say set on an ocean going vessel.
