Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

Episode 7 has accidentally gone live on Paramount+ Canada

Interestingly they let the episode finish. That they had solved a clue confused me, but I thought they must have gotten it off screen.

Was re-watching S02E01 ‘Brother’ recently, and I still feel it’s one of the very best post ‘17 Treks ever made. Also, what I find really amazing is that everything was done using conventional green screen work; there was no AR wall yet…. It’s really stunning when you think about it

The main advantage of the AR wall isn't so much that it makes things look better or more realistic but rather it provides the actors something to use as a point of reference while filming and makes things easier for the VFX people in post-production since all they're doing is refining image that's already there rather than creating one from scratch.

So the Discovery Season 4/5 openings. The first overhead shot of the Discovery is the pre-refit version, but with the nacelles detached
I wonder if that was a place holder they forgot to replace or what

The exact next shot with it right of Michael's head is the refit

Probably, but it could just be considered an evolution shot

I find the use of the AR wall so much better this season. In the previous season of DSC and SNW it was often glaringly obvious they were using the AR wall. You could tell by the rounded set and practically see where the ground met the screen. I can barely tell this season though. Impressed!

My wife, who is watching this bin fire of a show, has just shown me a picture of a Ferenghi and a Breen.

Absolute nightmare fuel.

Are people still crying over Disco Ferengi? The added texture to the skin, but otherwise it's the exact same way they've looked since 1987.

I disagree. The ear shape is quite different, without the top of the ears blending into the big brow-ridge. And from what we saw, they have normal teeth now, not those snaggly needle-teeth (though we know the Berman era Ferengi sharpened their teeth, so this might have been a cultural practice.

The weird thing is Season 3 of Picard showed a Ferengi who looked...pretty much exactly like a Berman-Era Ferengi. So this is one of those situations where different Kurtzman-era shows just conflict in terms of their depictions.

Really though, what this comes down to is Glenn Hetrick is given free reign to redesign stuff visually however he wants for Discovery, but he's not in charge for PIC or SNW. Either the makeup heads don't have as much pull there, or they're more conservative with their styles. Neither show seems to be as much a fan of the full silicone masks as Hetrick is.

It was actually the Ferengi on Picard who I thought looked slightly off. Not enough to get upset over, but also not quite right, is an odd indescribable way.

The PIC Ferengi makeup was not a full mask I think (unlike even DS9) I believe the actor's real chin and lower face was exposed, making it largely a head-piece over the ears, cheeks, and forehead.
