General Computer Thread

There aren't very many of those on the market even in the USA. I'm not sure if they even exist now.

Now, some good quality Flat-screen TVs will have decent speakers and can be used as a monitor...

This youtube is where I found these. But none available here.

Quick update: There apparently could be a fault in the heat sensors of the CPU, them giving false readings of the temperatures. Apparently due to a manufacturing error, so its possible the machine was already broken when it left the factory.
The machine is now under warranty repair, I am hoping it will go smoothly.
I still think this is a first time I have major issues with a totally new tech purchase, maybe I just have been very lucky :)

^^Hope you'll get a working machine back. :)

I've had a few DOA's in my time, I always build my machines instead of buying pre-assembled, here and there a mainboard or memory module arrived dead and in one instance a harddrive that had a catastrophic failure during the install of Windows, however I can't complain much.

Deepends on the consumer laws in Finland, but often a purchase is DOA within the first 2 weeks you get a brand new replacement. After that you usually wind up with a refurbished unit though you're covered by the remainder of your warranty.

Hmm.. I have a semi abandoned Dell Optiplex 745 mid tower machine, the machine has 4Gb RAM and a 250Gb HDD and a Radion X1300 Pro (RV505), today I tried to install Linux Mint 20.0 on it, despite it being a machine released in 2006 and having only a Core2Duo running at 2.4Ghz the machine is actually usable, going to add it to my pile of backup machines.

Fortunately - I keep my data numbered, for just such emergencies...

Wait, that's wrong...

This is mainly an issue with network storage (NAS) and shouldn't affect anyone like us since, I doubt you are going to use such expensive disks in your personal desktop or laptop.

Well not expensive if you only buy one, I did it. I moved to SSDs but kept that as a single backup image of my main drive and once every 6 months or so, or when I remember to I reimage my system onto that and lock it away in a box.

It's a specific type/family of hard disks, not all of them. What you have is probably not using SMR and I'll just about bet you aren't using the file system that this issue is mainly concerned with.

No I'm not. I purchased a NAS drive as a permanent backup for durability over anything else. I used to have another in the same machine I use now as a system drive till SSDs became an affordable option.

Harddrives are pretty much nearing the limit of what you can cram on a platter, they're going for heat assisted writing and microwave assisted writing and a few other techniques like that but there's only so much you can do, guess we might see 5'25" drives again.

They could always make 5,25" drives available again via a new technology that allows to put more on a disk, couldn't they? Then again, the memory stick sort of has taken on that role.
